Asteroids was juts five buttons, same for the Deluxe version. I would think that four way was for Pac-Man and Galaga style games. Tempest, Arkanoid, Mad Planets (if you have a flightstick too).....Disc's of Tron (but specialized spinner with up/down)

I've often thought the aircraft carrier CP design looked much better than it was practical, but if your going to incorporate pinball flipper, etc buttons on the left/right sides, how else? Sorta hard to accomplish that on a large swooping 4-player half-moon panel. Personally, I've always thought that one drop down button out there on the lower left is sort of a bastard button on an island, but maybe in practice it's really handy. I think I would like the arched button layout, but mine is straight and I like it pretty well. If I were building a new panel I believe this is the one I'd go with due to the smaller size of my hands. This layout uses the standard Japanese arcade design, but the proportions are set so the buttons fit together more evenly and closely. The buttons form equilateral triangles and a square. Being somewhat of a completest as well as the aforementioned "single player", I would scratch players 3 and 4 and instead put a dedicated Asteroids layout on one of those positions and something like two four way ball top sticks in the other, one tilted for Q-Bert and the other arranged for Pac-Man / Galaga style games. I would also have to incorporate two 8 way (maybe ServoStik's) sticks somewhere straight on for Robotron/Smash TV/Crazyclimber etc.. This would require a level of thought that I've not yet invested, but you can see that my goal would be more game coverage and less focus on increased players, but that's just me and my personal preferences.

This is one of the best looking control panels I've ever seen! Looks like they went with six on players 3 and 4. James Van Horn - Ultimarc Control Panel There's always the slagcoin guide for ideas and spacing.

Interesting, I saw this just the other day too, but didn't spend any time digging into it. I stopped planning for anything but single player, because, well, that's the reality of it for me! I can't offer much advise due to this, but with your panel and the much smaller selection of 3 & 4 player games (much less having a need for high button count), that sounds reasonable to me (the single player). Good to see you posting.

Saw this elsewhere and thought some here might want to see it.

I finally had time to get things assembled. My intial impressions are: 1: I'm not a fan of the 3M thermal transfer tape, probably will have to find an paste that has enough adhesive qualities to hold in place. 2: The CBMstuff multi-expansion board fan is LOUD

I picked up a few things from them, mostly because I needed some flush cutters after snapping the tip of mine. This is one tool I have to have! If there is a sharp cable tie edge, I'll find it, or one of my fingers will, is more like it. A spudger kit and tweezers kit, mostly because I've been swapping PC's to different cases and had just experienced of bunch of dropped screws and fan headers I couldn't reach due to heat sinks. I got tired of using bamboo skewers, and it seems something always comes up unexpected, like the failed power supply I had completely installed and neatly cable manged.

As I get older I notice tinkering with things increases, along with the need for tools to do it with. I thought it would be cool to have a thread to share where we obtain such items, for those of that do any way. iFixit is a good site and if you're looking for a good assortment of prepackaged sets, then they got you covered there too. https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/Pro-Tech-Toolkit/IF145-307?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=It+s+time+to+update+your+toolbox&utm_campaign=Drip%3A+Welcome+Email+%233+-+US&vgo_ee=vIjCpPgPtZ7Z6HdlCynngdKB%2B8tLtp2CHT%2BRqbvouAM%3D Digi-Key - the go to source for capacitors IMO Newark - who acquired the company I was using, but they're still a good resource that's perhaps a bit on the pricier side.

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/02/hardware_review_mister_fpga_-_a_tantalising_glimpse_into_the_future_of_retro_gaming There is also a Saturn Core in the works, not done/working, but the fact it is development is exciting.

What thermal paste did you use? Cell lid removal looks a bit risky, but I would like for it to last longer.

Saw this posted elsewhere and wanted to share it here. Ubisoft https://news.ubisoft.com/en-us/article/7ozlBdXERmblE0wkiSDt8/celebrate-lunar-new-year-with-assassins-creed-chronicles-china-free-on-pc Ends Feb 15th

Well, looks like I'll be standing mine upright for sure. Keeping it clean, including the occasional blowing out and reapplication of thermal past and upright should go a good ways to increasing the longevity. Mine has mostly be delegated to sitting on the shelf, recently anyway, but I did pick up some used sports games off of ebay that I need to give a whirl. I was thinking about picking up a replacement drive off ebay while they are cheap, now I'm wondering if I won't just end up with a drive I don't need. See what you did there, ignorance is bliss

Here's another FPGA project you may want to keep tabs on. Replay 2 looks interesting. FPGA Arcade

The default setting is Yes, but make sure in the setup wizard that "Show MAME CHD's" is set correctly. Try toggling "verify roms" off and update your MAME list for GameEx. You haven't provided your GameEx.ini and log, but I'm assuming you are running integrated MAME.

WOW, I didn't know this was even a thing. Is this issue mostly confined to the 60GB backward capable models? Mine's a 80GB, 2 USB model that I purchased in early January 2009 right as Circuit City was rumored to be going down for the count. I recall because I had received a gift card for Christmas, and ran to the store as soon as it became apparent they were about to go into liquidation. First one lasted maybe 20 days before the BR transport just up and failed. The replacement for it looked like it had been gone over with 60 grit. After battling it out with SONY support for a while they sent me a refurbished model that looked nearly new. It's seen limited gaming use and the power and eject buttons are finicky, seems to be sensitive to humidity. Works fine some months, not at all others, but is easily worked around with the remote I purchased, or one of the controllers. I ran F&H on this non-stop until the project ended. This dude modded his with a bunch of vent holes.

My Build: DE10-NANO - Product page CBMSTUFF DE-10 Multi Expansion Board USB Hub w/DC Splitter - Switch - USB Bracket 128MB SDRAM (sufficient for all current cores) - Yes that's MB 128 GB microSD - The SanDisk Ultra Plus line seems to be the go to standard, if there is a such a thing. Network attached storage and other similar methods are options too. I'm actually contemplating returning this and just running the cores on the included 8GB card included with the DE10-NANO. Mister Protective Cover & Decal Pack The nice thing about this little guy is that you can pick and choose what you want and don't. There are other options to the USB Hub if you have original controllers, but the polling has been increased on the latest generation of USB hubs and is now more in line with BliSTer from a latency perspective, or so I've read. As long as this holds true, then I pick the versatility of USB over original controllers that I would be faced with having to source anyway. Components for this project are constantly in and out of stock, due in large part that much of it is assembled by community hobbyist, turned small business owners By the time I purchased my DE10-NANO it was no longer in from Amazon and now doesn't appear to be available from any seller on there. Luckily, Digi-Key has plenty of them currently, and they package a whole hell of a lot better. Here's a nice recent overview of the project that includes some MAME split screen comparison's.

What we almost had! I wore the controllers out on the SNES port of this game, and would have loved this one too. He's on FIREEEEE........

That's a good idea now that I have all the parts shipping. Up until now I've just had a few odds and ends and a lot of visualization. Some of the documentation is a bit on the lacking side, I had to sort of sketch out the build just to figure what set of extra stand-offs I needed for the PCB covers, and I'm still not sure I got it right. There are some really nice cases out there, but they are specific to the components you choose, so I played it safe. These are my favorite cases, so far, but they are based upon the CBMstuff I/O board and don't currently accommodate a USB hub.

I'm a long time FireFox user, as in since Netscape released the source and Mozilla was founded, if you consider them to be synonymous anyway. That said, Brave is winning me over, but I'm still learning and adjusting to it. The Brave shields and TOR features are the highlights for me, but watch for WebRTC leaks if your concerned (VPN). I'm still on standard and it seems to be working well enough without moving to strict.

So this was my final assembly: DE10-NANO CBMSTUFF analog I/O board - think of this one as a heat sink and fan, even if you plan to run over HDMI USB HUB 128 MB SDRAM 128 GB microSD - I got this at Best Buy for two reasons, one being that it was less likely to be fake and the other being it was on sale. Case wrapper (Red) with extra set M-F standoffs For the microSD, the Ultra series seems to be the go to brand, I just got the Extreme Plus because it was on sale. The DE10-NANO comes with an 8GB (I think) if you just want to stick with it. I plan to eventually run this with just the cores loaded and obtain the game titles via network storage, because no matter what size microSD card you get, it will be limited to some degree and more prone to failure over the long haul. In my never ending quest for more information I was lucky to find this excellent video that explains things in both lay and more advanced levels. This guy does VGA to SCART too.

Oh don't worry, I'll bore everyone with bumps whether they read it or not I'm swamped with work right now, but picking away at it. The DE10 board is going up, I ended up ordering mine from Digi-Key since and offset the shipping cost by throwing in some caps I know I'm going to be needing. On Amazon it's only available from Teraisc, and they want $15 to ship it. I think it's caught on that this board has become extremely popular for reasons they never imagined. I know Tom's reading and at least tempted a bit himself, so I'm hoping it grabs his attention a bit more than it has. The nature of this thing doesn't lend itself to Frontends really, but I wonder if a border wrapper of sorts isn't possible around the core selection menu. Should someone be able to pull it off, MAME will have some serious competition. Regardless and like you already mentioned, I'm in for the lag-less experience. What exactly are you doing to your PS3?
-
In all seriousness, it's a decent little board that would be much more expensive than it is if it weren't being subsidized. https://software.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/topics/iot/hardware/fpga-de10-nano.html Digi-key has them too if you'd rather skip amazon's poor packaging. https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/terasic-inc/P0496/6817231
