Ok, maybe I should say CASH REGISTER... although there wasn't a till. It was a huge case, with a warning label on it saying to use 2 people to carry it, with a picture of 2 guys, and the weight of about 100 pounds. It was a server mount case, with mounting brackets on the sides, and 2 handles on the front. The hard drive was a full height 20mb (yes, megabytes) that I believe was a customized version of ESDI, thought I'm not sure, and it was over 20 pounds itself. In fact, here's a near identical picture: (http://www.fcet.staffs.ac.uk/jdw1/sucfm/1987harddisk20Mb.jpg) The expansion slots were all full-length ISA cards. There was the CGA video card, the floppy controller, the HDD controller, and the parallel controller. The modem was external, connected to the parallel card. There was a floppy drive but it was a 5 1/4 inch. There was also a fan in the front of the case, about 90mm, and it had a weird filter in front of it that looked like a scour pad for your dishes. Still, it was fun to tinker with and get working.

I used to be ranked on Chess.com back when I was a teenager. Back then I had an old 286 computer (found in the dumpster, not working, spent a summer fixing, found out it was POS machine from McDonalds!) with a CGA monitor and a 9600 baud modem. They didn't have graphic internet yet, it was all GOPHER menus on the local FreeNet provided by the library. Back then, there was no TCP/IP and PPP connections so you couldn't really just go up and type in www.yahoo.com and go there... you had to browse through dozens of backend menus to find it. Anyway, somebody had developed a graphic interpreter for Chess.com so you could have a point-and-click interface to play chess, and it would send the command to chess.com as your move. We're talking very old archaic times here. Chess.com was essentially an IRC like place, using Telnet. You would be in a central chat room, then create a game, wait for somebody to join, then it would send a crude ASCII artwork of the table and your pieces. You typed in your move using standard chess algebraic notation, the screen would then render a new ASCII board with your move, then you waited until the other person played. I spent HOURS playing with people all over the world with that. Then I learned about MUD's and I started playing those instead. I miss those good old days, playing ASCII chess and text-only (Infocom) MUD's. EDIT -> I'm only 33 by the way

I agree with both here. I really depends on your system, and what you want it to do. If you have a specific game you want to play, it's nice to try it out on different systems, MESS, Mednafen, Magic Engine, etc., and see what works best for you. I prefer Magic Engine myself though.

I just recently installed the Atomiswave and Noami stuff, cause I didn't know I could use my already existing MAME roms. I'm using MAP files. Does this update make much difference for me?

There's no reason you can't still add scores to this thread. This game was just a highlight for the month, not meant to be only played during that month. I'm glad we got a new submission for this game. Hopefully this will help promote more scores to be submitted. Nice score by the way. Even if it's not the best, you still earn points for the leaderboard!

Way to go pal! Glad to see you in the ranks of the Elite! Don't let it go to your head though.

Just to make note; I DID successfully update one of GC's threads yesterday, so I can confirm it works for me at least. Thanks go out to those who were responsible for providing us with the little more power to accomplish that! -
Chess is one of those "Easy to Learn, Difficult to Master" type games. I have absolutely no strategy when I play. I just know how the pieces move. If you can learn just that much, you're probably just as good as most other people. Then you have the true egg heads who sit down and spend hours going over books of strategies, identifying strengths and weaknesses, seeing how moves made NOW are to setup traps and endgames for LATER, studying the great master's moves, etc. For the most part, just learning how the pieces move is good enough for most people.

It's an idea for sure. Personally though, I'm leaning more towards Dazzle's reasoning. We're not THAT busy with tons of submissions a day. There's only been one or two days where we had a whole bunch, and that's because we created new games to submit to. Some days we don't have any submissions at all, while others we might have 1 or maybe 2. So it's not really an issue right now. If things start getting really busy around here, sure we may have to implement a deadline. But I think we're good right now. As a side note; I'm getting more compliments here than I do at work. I hate my job. -
Does Huffyuv support alpha channels? I remember using Huffyuv to dramatically decrease filesize when I was doing capturing. Maybe it's a possible alternative?

Well it's been a long time coming. I remember years ago we tried to get a hi-score competition type thing going, but nobody wanted to stick around long enough to actually DO the work. The hard part about this is going in and updating the OP's when a new score is made. It's not really hard, but more like a sense of urgency to get the updated scores up so people know where they are. Having somebody with moderator power to go in and edit somebody else's post makes it that much easier, because you don't have to rely on the topic creator to be the only one that can update the scores. Also, I'd like to thank everybody for their kind words, and their active participation in the various game competitions. You're what makes the whole thing worth while and fun. We (GC and I) are only here to give you someplace to post what you've accomplished. Without your contributions, this would never have been as much a success as it is. We could still use more players though. We're averaging about 10 votes per month on the GOTM and about 6 score submissions per game. I KNOW we have more users out there. EVERYBODY can participate, so pass the word along! -

Thanks for the promotion, again. I will do my best not to abuse the power. This should help with managing the threads a bit more by not being limited to updating the threads only YOU create. Our little corner of the forums are gaining popularity little by little, and this will go a long way to help make things even better. -
I was born in 1980. However I grew up in a poverty stricken household. Still am, matter of fact. I didn't really get to do much arcade gaming when I was little. The earliest I can remember was going to a friend's Chucky Cheese's birthday party, and Mom gave me $5 for tokens. I played about $3 worth of skeeball, and then $1 worth of racing (Pole Position I believe, might have been Hang-On, I know it was a sit down game) and then $1 of After Burner with the pitching cockpit (the one seen in Terminator 2). There was also a little party at our local roller skating rink, and I didn't have any money. So I walked up to a bunch of arcade games and PRETENDED that I was playing during the attract mode. Lol, kinda lame, but it was cool for me at the time. Then later in high school we took a trip down to Florida and stopped over at a truck stop. They had a Killer Instinct machine running, and everybody played on that while I watched as the busses got refueled. Then once we were in Florida, the hotel we were staying at had an Earthshaker pinball machine in the gift shop, so I played about $10 there. Other than that, my local comic shop when I was in my early teens had a Star Trek TNG pinball machine in their store, and I played it a bunch of times with left over allowance money I didn't spend on comics. Never got onto the high score boards though. That was it for my arcade experience. OH WAIT! I did play 1 game (lasted very shortly) of the Star Wars Trilogy (Model 3) arcade game at a movie theater waiting for Star Wars Episode 1 to start showing on the IMAX screen. Aside from that, we were all Atari growing up until our Grandma got us a Sega Master System from a garage sale, and then my parents got my brother a Sega Genesis for his birthday. It was going to be a Christmas present but the stores were out of them. His birthday is January 9th, and they just happened to have some more in stock by then. To this day he still treats it as HIS system, even though he only had 3 games, and I had about 12 for it.

Yeah I did 'ok' with that score. I'm a bit ashamed it wasn't higher. This was THE game I would play just about every day on my Dad's Atari ST when I got home from school, so I got a lot of practice in. It's a lot harder now though, because I'm using a gamepad, when I was using a joystick before.. pressing 2 buttons (jump and bubble) is different than on the Atari where it was 1 button (bubble) and UP (jump). Still, I could probably beat that score on my own with more practice.

BAH! I knew somebody would best my score eventually. Nice job!

Yeah, trying being like me and playing with a game pad. I don't have an arcade cab/control panel so it's all game pad plays for me. My thumb get sooooo sore playing these games.

Man it's just plain hot everywhere. Record heat wave hitting the US East Coast. I'm in Ohio, a little further inland, and we're up to 95f (least that's what the car and the bank's sign say). With humidity over 60%, it's a heat index over 100f. I hate the heat. At least when it's snowing I can control the heat in my room with a portable room heater, but they don't really make anything small for air conditioning. So I have to live with dad's whole house setting of 71f. My room faces east, and gets hit the hardest during the day, and it doesn't go away at night fast enough before the next day heats it even more. I got my ceiling and oscillating fans on high, but they just blow hot air around. UUUHG.

HOLY CRAP This competition is over for me! With that score, there's no way. Updated OP.

Jeez you guys! That game is a lot harder than it looks! I spent like 20 minutes just playing the first round over and over trying to survive. The constant scrolling makes I difficult. That, and the fact that all your shots take away from your health so you have to be conservative. That sucks. Took me a good 3 or 4 tries to kill that stupid fish at the end. Finally I busted the lowest 30,000 score on the high score table, and was able to get all the way to the snake boss on the 2nd level. Couldn't beat him without loosing all my lives. I managed to take out one of his tail links though. Talk about insane. This game looks like it would be gentle and for kids. Not at all what I expected! Score: 57470 Initials: HAN Updating OP, Database, and RSS.

No previous experience with this game. I don't like it. The controls are sticky for me. I don't like not being able to go up and down ladders when I have to. UHG! Guess it's just going to take practice. Anyway, here's my score, easily beatable, especially by those who know and love the game. Score: 6400 Initials: HA (I typed the N too but it didn't take)
