Just to go ahead and get this out of the way, do not change rom names. Hopefully you kept a clean backup of 0.149, because you are correct that you cannot simply copy the updates into the full set folder, as the updates are not always additions, but many times tweaks to the individual images themselves. Tools like clrmampro and romvault correctly integrate these new files with the old ones, and likewise have the abiity to borrow missing files from other complete titles to create working titles from previously non-working status. If your mostly into classics, then the 0.149 set will most likely suit you fine. Many of the CHD's are non-working, so if you don't use them, save the headaches, and the drive space. If you gotta have the latest greatest, then practice on a back up set until you have it down IMO, else be prepared for the consequences. That dats themselves can be created in clrmampro by pointing to the mame executable that you are trying to build for. Profiles>create>point to mame executable, be sure emulator type is correctly set to mame. When I update I always do so incremently, and so I've never tried jumping multiple releases in one shot. The art and all the xtra goodies go a long way to adding to the experience, and configing GameEx to point at these paths correctly makes for a nice setup. You're going to want these regardless of emumovies IMO, but emumovies is the icing on the cake. Together you get the best of both worlds, so my advice use them both, but let GameEx pull down your snaps for you using the automated feature.
