Glad to hear you got everything figured out Link2097. Nice detective work!

It sounds like you're familiar with ROM management software such as ClrMamePro or ROM Center, so basically you just need to grab the applicable No-Intro DAT from here, use that as your data source in your ROM management software, and run the tool against your ROM set. If you're running against a GoodTools set, it will probably take a while since it will have a lot of ROMs to uncompress and subsequently recompress. It goes with out saying, but you'll want to back up your ROM set before attempting this. As a side note, you'll generally want to avoid renaming ROMs from one of the standard naming conventions. There are parts of GameEx and the EmuMovies utilities that rely on the utilization standardized ROM naming. There are multitudes of ways to exercise control over how your ROMs are actually displayed in GameEx (i.e. they will be displayed in a more friendly format despite having all the markup in the file name), so it's not the end of the world or anything.

Hi xyzzy The big question here is whether you rebuilt your MAME list after making any or all of the changes described above. Any time you make a change affecting the contents of your MAME list in any way, you'll need to rebuild your MAME list from within GameEx for those changes to take effect. There's an Update List option that appears at the bottom of your MAME category list inside of GameEx. Give that a spin if you haven't yet.

Typically you would set the download folder to your existing artwork directory. Among other things the EmuMovies utility will scan the artwork directory to determine what artwork files you already have (it will skip those), and what files need to be updated in the event that better/newer artwork has been uploaded to EmuMovies. GoodTools names should work fine, but as I noted above No-Intro is probably the preferred naming standard. Edit: Tempest may be correct here. I thought the download utility employed some sort of name matching algorithm, but I myself use No-Intro, so I'm not 100% certain on that

I didn't say you had to pay him directly or in person, only that you should report your issue directly to him via PM or email. Unless you just need someone with whom to commiserate in which case I'll say, "I'm sorry dude, that sucks." Even the forum staff doesn't have the power to resolve payment and registration issues. That's why you'll need to contact Tom. I bet he'll have you squared away in no time.

Hi WingSlug and Welcome! For any issues relating to registration or your purchase of GameEx please contact Tom Speirs directly. You can send a PM or utilize the form seen here. Thanks WingSlug.

Hi Dragon Punch If I were to guess, I'm thinking this is related to the database changes occurring in GameEx 13.15. Specifically I would direct you towards Adultery's post seen here, as I believe he also had some issues with the database updates. If that's not it I would advise you to upload your GameEx config and log so we can perhaps get a better idea of what's happening. You know, that old drill.

I'll just leave this here. This isn't an emulator I use, but those instructions seem pretty thorough. Be sure to read the entire thread, as the advice to compile using headkaze's MAME Compiler 64 is very good advice. Hopefully enough to set you on the right track. Good luck!

Hi GiSWiG and Welcome to the GameEx forums! I'll address your questions in the order in which they were asked. If I'm understanding the question correctly, all you would need to do is rename the artwork exactly the same as the ROM (minus the extension). Then you would just need to put the renamed artwork into the artwork directory(s) you've configured. If you're looking to get sophisticated about it, I'd take a look at Perfect Match written by our forum's very own Tempest. The GameEx artwork download feature uses the exact same functionality as the EmuMovies Download Service Utility. So if you wanted to force an immediate rescan, I'd probably just use that. Depends on what ROM set we're talking about. Generally speaking No-Intro is preferred, then TOSEC, and trailing in a distant third is GoodNames. Then you've got some dark horses like ReDump for disc images etc. Good luck to you!

Oof ... yeah speaking on a personal level I'd probably steer clear of this one as well. The features sound cool and everything, but an emulator that is going to cause conflicts with my video drivers? Ugh ... no thanks. And after reading the documentation you provided it does indeed sound like they are referring to DOS as an operating system, which seems a bit odd to me since ... come on are we living in 1986? ... but whatevs. Maybe it would run under DOSBox? (which just begs to be described as an emulator inside your emulator so you can emulate while you're emulating ... but I'm not going to go there ... except I just did ... dangit).

Not sure why this is, but maybe it will help someone else

Hi xyzzy and Welcome to the GameEx Forums! I'm glad to hear that you resolved your problem, and thanks for taking the time to share your solution. It's hard to speculate on the nature of this error without knowing more specifics about your system. GameEx generates a runtime log at startup which contains a plethora of details about your GameEx environment. Most of the time the log will have some details about a crash experienced during runtime. At the vary least it makes it a bit easier to see what GameEx was doing at the time of the crash. Accordingly it also makes it easier to determine the cause of errors occurring with your configuration. When reporting an error it's a very good idea to follow the directions seen in the How to Ask For Help thread, although I'd imagine you're not in a hurry to attempt to recreate the error just so we can look at your log. I'd also be a bit curious to see the thread with the original problem report. Is this happening in the current version of GameEx? -
There was a thread about this recently over on the BYOAC forums. The responses therein provide a pretty good handful of suggestions, though I won't pretend to have tried more than one. The responses there give a slight edge to Fraps, but only by a slim margin (and Fraps is not strictly Freeware, at least not for unlimited usage). After reading the responses I'd be curious to check out Bandicam (also not strictly freeware) and MSI Afterburner Predator (which is free).

I have to admit that I'm pretty backlogged on Splinter Cell games. I haven't played any of them since Pandora Tomorrow! Especially unfortunate considering that Chaos Theory is supposed to be pretty legendary. So I probably won't jump at this on the dat of release, but I'll likely keep an eye out for this to come up as a Steam sale or something. @Han: I'm also huge fan of both Metal Gear Solid and the Splinter Cell games (or at least the ones I've played ). The Splinter Cell series does draw several obvious comparisons with the Metal Gear Solid games, but also has some nice things that set it apart. At the time of it's release I even felt that some of the stealth elements in Splinter Cell were actually done better than in MGS. I guess the distinction I'd make is that in MGS the stealth elements sometimes make you feel like you're hiding from enemies (especially if you're going for minimum kill ratio). In Splinter Cell the stealth elements make you feel like you're just waiting for enemies to stumble into your trap. It's also nice that the plot(s) in Splinter Cell will not require the use of mind altering substances to comprehend.

I think you're spot on there Tempest, by which I think he's saying that there isn't a UI for AdvanceMAME. OTOH I was under the impression that both CabMAME and GroovyMAME were in the same boat. @u-man Tempest is right that I don't think you need to worry about running AdvanceMAME from DOS Mode or the command line. GameEx is already doing that for you. So you may need to alter the command that GameEx runs, but beyond that you should be OK. Are you able to plug the AdvanceMAME executable into ClrMamePro to scan your ROMs? Just for kicks you ought to try running a scan against your current ROMs to see how compatible they would be with AdvanceMAME. You might be surprised at the number of games that would probably run just fine through AdvanceMAME. It's a thought anyway.

Whoa ... whoa ... woah Just because we're nay-saying doesn't mean it's necessarily a waste of time there friend. The way I figure it we're just some dudes hanging out talking about our hobby. Just like any group of sports fans who get together, one guy is going to think the Anytown Mud Ducks are absolutely brilliant while another guy will think they're crap. With car guys you'll have one dude who (correctly) thinks the 1969 Chevelle SS with the 454 big block was the greatest muscle car of all time whereas some other dude will say it's the 69 Pontiac GTO Judge. Who's right? Who's wrong? It doesn't matter. Not the point. Hell despite some popular trends (in the U.S.) I always thought putting fruit in beer was a terrible idea until I tried a radler one exceedingly hot day this summer and it knocked my socks off. Who knew!? What I'm saying is that just because we bring up possible limitations of a plugin like this doesn't mean it's a waste of time to mention it, nor does it mean that this is the wrong place to talk about it. Stay cool man, and FWIW I've always found your English to be exceptional; a million times better than my German (which is non-existent), despite the fact that I was born in Wiesbaden!

Sounds like a cool idea u-man. I'll be curious what others have to say about it, but to my mind it's blurring the line between the role of the emulator and the role of the frontend. To me it sounds like something better accomplished with a custom build of MAME much like AdvanceMAME. In order to pull this off with an external plugin or application there would need to be a high level of interoperability between the external component and the emulator. What I mean is that the plugin would need to store information about each ROM, and know what ROM was being loaded at any given time. That part would be fairly arbitrary. Where it would get very difficult is that the plug-in would need to make the emulator "do something". This part would require two factors. The plug-in would need to 'know' enough about the inner workings of the emulator to properly "invoke the thing" and the emulator would need to expose the functionality to allow an external application to make it "do the thing". I guess to me it seems like an unnecessary additional layer. Utilizing a custom build of MAME would eliminate many of the complications above. I'm going out on a limb, but I would guess the differences between the various drivers in MAME means that what works to accelerate the start-up of one game may not work to accelerate that of another (I could be wrong about this). So if one were to go the route of a custom MAME build we wind up back where we started with AdvanceMAME, at which point it begs the question as to why one would duplicate their effort in the first place. Purely my 2p, and I'll be curious to hear what others have to say. ... And this has been another memo brought to you from the desk of Capt. Nojoy McBuzzkill

This. I would guess that even those who feel a bit luke warm about Smith's Doctor have to give it up for the incomparable Karen Gillian. During her run she really swooped in as one of my all time favorite companions. The story arc between Amy and Rory (as well as the 'love triangle' with the Doctor), is/was one of the most compelling companion story arcs in the series (IMO). I'll also always have a soft spot for Rose ... who apparently became a hooker after her time with the Doctor. Apparently he ruined her for all other men. Perhaps there's a crossover in the works? You jest, but I have a slight chuckle every single time the show pulls out the old "Doctor Who?" gag. Every. Single. Time. I suck.

Dude, I hate to say it but GameEx 10.25 is pretty ancient at this point. You may have a better handle on how to configure 10.25, but from our perspective it may be completely frivolous for us to attempt to troubleshoot the error seen in your log, since it's likely that it's been fixed in one of the (several) intervening versions between 10.25 and 13.16 (the current version). Sorry to be the wet blanket here, but I would hate to see us spinning our wheels trying to fix something that's already been fixed. I would highly recommend updating to the current version of GameEx though. It's awesome! We're here to provide assistance with any problems you may encounter with your setup or give additional details for any elements of the current configuration that might be confusing. Thanks Diego!

Looks like someone's been dabbling in UNIX and/or Linux! Windows needs the back slash as the directory separator. "[ROMPATH]\[ROMFILE]"

I do love me some Xpadder, but I'd be hesitant to say that it's essential to the GameEx experience. GameEx itself does have native support for game pads, but as KRC points out some emulators may not be compatible with Xbox 360 controllers. KRC's advice is very good, and Xpadder can certainly facilitate some emulator functionality not otherwise available directly from a controller, but I just thought I would mention that Xpadder is not strictly required for GameEx.

Yes. Also appearing were Doctor Doom, Dr. Dre, and Dr Demento. It was called The Five Doctors. J/K I would pay money to see that show. My first was Tom Baker. During junior high my saturday morning ritual was to get up and watch the Doctor Who repeats that were broadcast on the local PBS affiliate (with little regard for broadcasting in any sort of established episode order mind you). The second Doctor I ever saw was Colin Baker so ... yeah ... Tom Baker is the quintessential Doctor to my mind. In some ways I agree with you and KRC regarding Matt Smith. The Doctor has traditionally been played with an air of unflappable confidence. Eccleston had it. Tennant had it. Smith ... has often played the Doctor tentatively, seemingly unsure of himself. That being said Smith is my second favorite of the current Doctors, with the first being Tennant. Eccleston played the role a bit too much as a self consciously cool guy, for my taste. I mean can you seriously picture Eccleston s Doctor pulling off the 'celery on the lapel' look? More Arthur Conan Doyle less Arthur Fonzarelli please. So yeah it will definitely be interesting to see a slightly older Doctor helming the TARDIS once again. The original run of classic Doctor Who contains some of the greatest Sci-Fi stories of this generation. But it also probably contains some of the worst (and I say that with nothing but love in my heart). My advice? Start with the current series starting in 2005. Actually start with the episode entitled, "The Weeping Angels" If you enjoy that, check out the 2005 series from the beginning. If you don't enjoy that episode please turn in your geek card at the desk. Just kidding! Actually Doctor Who may not be for everyone. It's very different from most other classic televised Sci-Fi. Pretty much all other classic onscreen Sci Fi I can think of operates against the backdrop of some sort of military industrial structure in which the protagonists are working in support of some established power base. Military means are often deployed as the best solution to a given problem. Doctor Who is sort of the opposite of that. The Doctor works best as an agent of subversion, someone who has no qualms about toppling established structures of order and power (and doing so as a pacifist). Good stuff for certain.

source: http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2013/08/doctor-who-peter-capaldi-announced-as-the-twelfth-doctor/ So it's no big secret that I'm a pretty big Doctor Who fan. I'm excited about this news, but will miss Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor. After 3 "young hipster" doctors in a row it will be a refreshing change to see someone older and more distinguished in the role. It's definitely a move that harks back to the classic series. With the more aged Doctors there was always the feeling of someone more alien and distant, whereas the recent Doctors were all very accessible. I'd love to see the part played in the vein of Sly McCoy's 'Chessmaster Doctor' but with the modern sensibilities that Moffat and crew have brought to the series. It will be interesting to see how this goes over with the fans who came on board during the 2005 - series. I'm not familiar with Capaldi's previous work, so it looks like I'll have some catching up to do. At least in terms of looks he's probably the closest we'll come to having David Bowie play the role. So do we have any other Whovians in the house? What's your take on the ol' codger up there?

It looks like it's a compiled version of MAME used for debugging. So mamed.exe would allow you to utilize step through debugging tools with MAME such as Visual Studio. It would be worthwhile to either change that setting in GameEx (if that's not what your MAME exe is called) or simply download MAME again (Since you probably don't need a debugging version, unless you're altering the source code and testing changes).

It looks like you have a typo in your MAME Options. That may not be the source of the issue, but it certainly can't be helping.

Oooooh ... I'm sorry man! I thought you were talking about configuring navigation for GameEx. So yeah ... you'll need to configure controls for each emulator on a per emulator basis. This falls under the golden rule of "Configure the emulator and get it working outside of GameEx prior to adding it into GameEx" Currently there's no way to globally configure controls for all emulators. I think this project was sort of geared towards doing what you describe, but I've never tried it (and TBH this one always seemed a bit sketchy to me - purely IMO). A project of this nature would be an absolutely massive undertaking. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
