  1. Fan created. Aside from the close ups of the button pushing, I've seen all the clips from other sources. Unfortunate. I could really do with an updated effects sequel. Notice I said SEQUEL. I don't want any kind of reboot. There doesn't need to be a Melissa McCarthy girls-only remake (no offense). I wouldn't mind a true sequel, even if it was 90% fresh and new with at least some headnod's and cameos from the original cast to set the story going in the right direction. But no reboots. I'm sick of Hollywood's lack of ideas. Here's an idea... Emmett's kids. They know of the time travel train. But something devastating happens. They forget all about time travel for like a generation. Doc, Clara, they're all dead. Doc's invention earns him prestigious awards and essentially sets everybody in the main cast for life. In comes some grandchild of Doc's. He's kinda like Flynn's son in Tron; really smart, but not using his talents. He uncovers some of his grandfather's designs that were locked away somewhere. He takes them and via some Tony Stark copyright infringing he begins to tinker with the designs and builds a new time machine, but it's missing an important part. Digging all over he can't figure out what the key missing part is. Frustrated, he goes to his father (one of Doc's kids) and asks. He tells him about the devastating event that killed his mother, and sent his brother into some unknown future with the time travel train. Shocked to learn he has an uncle, he searches for more clues and finds Marty, now an elderly crippled old man (Michael J Fox). They talk, Marty fills him in on his uncle, then goes through an elaborate underground facility to uncover a buried and forgotten piece of the puzzle; the Flux Capacitor! It gets installed, then him and Marty go to the future to find his uncle who arrives at the time they believe the train will appear. Only part of the story was left out; his uncle is only like 10 years old, and Doc is with him! Things progress as expected (Doc and Marty are reunited, Doc and grandson meet, Doc learns of that the jump to the future with his son on the train caused a backwash rip and killed Clara.) At this point of the story, it's so far into the future that something like Aliens, or Artificial Intelligence has taken over the planet, and the ability to replace the spent fuel becomes a problem. The movie is almost over at this point so Doc comes up with some crazy idea to try, it works, and they go back in time to a point before they killed Clara. Then the movie ends with Marty going back to his present but Doc's grandson stays in the past to help build a defense against whatever plagues the distant future. The end. And I swear to God, if something like this happens and I don't get any kind of royalties, I'm gonna be f'ing pissed. That took more creativity out of me then I've had since Middle School.
  2. Yeah I knew it takes place here. Draco sort-of dropped that bomb. And then trailers that I have seen showed that too. But yeah, I just went back through the entire thread and read all the spoilers. Having not read the book yet, I can see a lot of the gripe was in the things that changed. I get that. As a Tolkien fanboy I was furious at Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies. But, once I learned in the bonus features that most of the "liberties" were actually in the true canon timeline just not word-for-word written in the book itself (later added in the appendices), I got over it and enjoyed the movies more. For this movie, I can understand the frustration of things being outright changed. Like Artemis supposed to be somewhat "fat" instead of a halfway hot looking chick (although I prefer Olivia Cooke over somebody else like Lori Beth Denberg from Nickelodeon's All That [no offense]). Or key plot points being changed. I can imagine there being very specific things that happened or were referenced that were completely changed or removed.. and I agree that would piss me off. But, Cline approved it, so maybe it's for the better? Maybe the movie is a batter representation of his vision for the book? I know, probably not, books are always better. But thanks just the same for the badgering on me to watch it!
  3. Meh, I think it was better/funnier having the same perspective as H. Alright.. so yeah.. That movie was pretty awesome. Loved the references. It'd be fun to watch it and keep a tally of all the ones I see. I especially like that the real world takes place in my home town. Troubling thing is that they don't actually have any referencing landmarks, so it could really be anywhere. We don't have a place called "The Stacks". I liked the ending but it seemed kinda cliche, like Halliday uploaded his consciousness into the OASIS? It also sort of got a kinda Willy Wonka vibe, with the test being a test of character and knowledge of the past. I find it hard to believe too that of the entire world, with "billions" of players, that all of the main cast, including the chief villain, happen to live within 20 miles or so from each other. But I did appreciate the "hero gets the girl" classic ending, because that's the sort of thing I'm hoping for in my life; to find somebody who's attractive in my own eyes regardless of faults others ignore her for, and to find something of a common ground to share life with. Someday, I know it! I also loved how the final key to it all existed in finding the Easter Egg in Atari's Adventure; I've never done it myself but have seen it in videos. That's a momentous mark in history to acknowledge, and a fine way to tie it in. Now I understand the icons on the cover art. So, um.. 4/5 stars for me. I'd give it a 5/5 if only it had some pop culture references to Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. I guess they did say "Millennium Falcon... I'm sure things like that would have been in the book, or in the sequel, etc. Just due to licensing and what not, they couldn't make it happen. But with everything else in there, you'd think they could have gotten away with it. As to why I've not watched it yet.. all I can do is shrug. I heard about this project years ago on here, when the book was first published. Then it became so popular they made the movie. The movie was such a huge hit with you guys, I knew I'd love it, so I bought the 4k Blu-ray without ever seeing it in the theater. I just opened it up today. I regret it. This is a movie that would have been awesome to see in the theater in 3D. I hope to not make that mistake again if something like this happens in the future (with the sequel). I know I regretted not seeing Avatar theatrically in 3D, but the sequel is coming soon and I'm gonna go see that! Thanks everybody for all the hype and recommendations. And especially thanks for keeping the spoilers down to a minimum as best as possible.
  4. Watching it now. So far I'm really digging it. Loving all the pulp culture references! Just passed a scene with The Shining. I feel like I should probably have watched it before too lol.
  5. I'll make a special attempt to watch it this weekend.
  6. Nice! With the inserts it looks cat friendly. That's one of the biggest reasons we don't do board games or puzzles at home anymore. If there was a way to play the game, then say "I'm going to bed" and in effect "save" the game till later, that'd be great. Of course, in a normal house without pets that's not a problem. But anybody with cats at least would know the struggles.
  7. I love what George Lucas did with Star Wars (purposeful derailment of of the OP since it's gone from movie to politics to racism and religion). I never even thought about all that when I grew up watching Star Wars. It was way over my head at the time. Then, when I was older, I picked up so much more about the religious aspects and what things like the Force and the Jedi represent. Then I saw a documentary where George confirmed it was all deliberate, and that the subtle nuances were meant to be picked up and made relevant to all cultures in their own way. Dune is very much the same. As is Star Trek (at least it started out that way). Every episode had something to do with current events and science fiction provided the platform to present new and alternative points of view. This is what makes great sci-fi.. Hiding the true purpose of a story behind universal characters dealing with lasers and aliens. At the end of the day (maybe this thread) I'm just glad to see another re-working of Dune, and can't wait to see it.
  8. Yeah I agree. I only just read the book a couple of years ago. I'm such a slow reader it's disgusting. I mean, Frank Herbert wrote that book with so many made up words, I found myself constantly flipping to the dictionary at the back of the book just so I could remember what the heck he was talking about. I never heard the audio book, and it's probably a little easier to grasp. But yea, I got the book at the library, had it for 30 days then had to take it back, renewed it, read for another 30 days, and was then only about 1/4 of the way through. I asked the librarian if I could renew it again, and they said I could renew it as many times as it takes BUT it was reserved for somebody else so I had to wait for them to finish (I reserved it myself) before I could finish it. The movie was cool for me as a kid growing up, although I didn't really follow much of the story. I just remember there were desert fight scenes with huge worms, and it had Captain Picard in it. Then later I remember playing Dune: Battle for Arrakis on the PC and felt like I should watch it again. I enjoyed it more as a teenager and was able to grasp the story better. Then Syfy came out with their campy acting yet much better story telling mini-series. Then I read the book over the course of like 6 months. I still have plans to read all the rest of the Frank Herbert books, though I'm not sure if I want to bother with his son's stuff or not.
  9. Oooh wow, yeah I never had an alien pounding the windshield, but I do remember you had to wait for them to knock on the door or you'd die. Man, I need to play this again lol.
  10. Not that I recall. It's been a long time. I remember the awesome theme music, flying around, shooting what looked like bases, landing and picking up survivors. Unless they were the aliens you're talking about.
  11. I hope they flesh out and develop more of the meanings and nuances in the reboot. The first movie did a pretty poor job of doing that. The Syfy Channel's mini-series was a LOT better, although it had some pretty piss poor campy acting. I actually enjoy it better. I also hope they don't use the "wierding modules". That was just some stupid crap David Lynch came up with for the movie to circumvent having the Fremen use the "wierding way" technique. There's a lot in the book that was never brought to screen. The whole bit with the Bene Geserit purposely coordinating the births so Paul would never be born (thus creating the messiah and the jihad), and then with Alia being born with the full knowledge of an adult and the past because of the water of life. All the stuff about Jessica's purpose, Chani being Kyne's daughter, Stilgar's role as 2nd in command until Paul is supposed to kill him. Then there's all that prelude, about how Shaddam IV is eliminating his imperial competition by purposely giving Arakkis to Atradies knowing that Harkonnan will come back in force and do his "dirty work" by killing him. So much in context is lost when you're forced to combine a huge book into 2 hours. I'm glad they're doing a split series, it will definitely help the story. I agree with Draco too.. they better not add a bunch of non-canonical BS just to make it more interesting. It worked with the Hobbit because a lot of the stuff that was added was actually included in the appendices except for the whole bit about Legolas's girlfriend, and her loving a dwarf nonsense. If it goes well, maybe they'll make the series? I'd like to see a proper Children of Dune made instead of the crap Syfy came up with. I don't think it followed the book very well at all.
  12. I loved this game!
  13. I just hope they fix Arnold's bug eyes, even if it was scientifically accurate.
  14. All us geeky nerds probably know him as T'Challa from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He died 2 days ago from Stage 4 colon cancer. Sucks.
  15. Meh, could be worse! Updated OP
  16. Look at it this way; You posted a score, which is better than me. You're also not in last place. And because you're not in last place, that means you beat @GimmeClassics, which is always a plus. Updated OP, DB, RSS
  17. Just gotta keep at it. Updated OP, DB, RSS
  18. Wow, you more than doubled your previous entry of 49,500. Way to go! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  19. There is so much controversy surrounding the Disney 7-9 movies and #9 in particular. There was a mad scramble to get the movie made and out. There were different angles of story they had available to go with, and over 4 hours of footage shot on film, including a massive lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo and Palpatine (reminiscent of the battle between Ob-Wan, Qui-Gonn and Maul only better) that Daisy Ridley spent MONTHS training for. Ultimately though it was cut and hacked and mangled into the mess it turned out to be all thanks to Kathleen Kennedy. Out of no where, the movie starts with Palpatine back, and the movie is ripe with all kinds of new Jedi powers never before existing. Nope, once Disney finally got their greedy hands on the entire Lucasfilm franchise, things just flopped. And hiring in Kathleen Kennedy to rule over everything Star Wars was just the worst possible decision they could have made. She had her own agenda going into it, with plans to completely erase George Lucas' approved expanded universe to set into motion what she felt was a better way to go. She's a feminist and tried her best to get that message across, to the point of including completely unnecessary female bonding (nobody said anything about LESBIANS, just FEMINISM). And she went and purposely killed off all the original characters even though there is video footage of her talking with Lucas about the plans and promising him she won't do anything to the originals. So, she kills Han in the 1st, Luke and most of the Rebels in the 2nd, and everybody else in the 3rd. I could go on and on about how KK is such a "wolf in sheep's clothing". She prompted that crap "Forces of Destiny", and "Galaxy of Adventures" and claims to have created the "Baby Yoda" shit but it's not what she had in mind (saying it was supposed to be a female alien, not of Yoda species... so she's just pissed and trying to take credit for it). Last I heard, Disney flat out FIRED Kathleen Kennedy and REHIRED George Lucas. That might be just a rumor, but Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are desperately trying to bring Star Wars back to where it needs to be, and have George Lucas right there in the middle of it. There's talk of a George Lucas cut of Rise of Skywalker, which will have only like 20% of already seen footage, and 80% previously unseen, basically remaking the entire movie. The idea is that if Star Wars is to continue past Episode 9, they need to do some serious retcon work. KK went to the extreme creating new force powers that should not exist.. like the whole force heal bit. So that all has to be cut out. The Jedi Master Trio is working on it, and rumors are now that we might get to see this retcon'd George Lucas cut OFFICIALLY on Disney+ in the next year or so. All that said. I still love Daisy Ridley. Even though KK fucked her in the ass, excuse my language.
  20. SPOILER! Jeesh! Actually, I'm still planning on watching this in the coming days. And if it turns out as good as you all say it is, I might get this book. But I think I'll wait until the reviews are in, and then see about maybe getting a bundle deal on both. That is, unless I hate the movie, in which case reading (or listening to) the book is unnecessary.
  21. Let's go more off-topic... I want Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager on High-Def Bluray! But we'll never get it. Sure, the acting footage is available on film and can be scanned. But all of the exterior shots of the ships/station/etc were recorded on VHS and then composited on VHS. Then to make it even more miserable, the later seasons used more CGI, and the models were all rendered at low-def 480p resolutions. So even if they upscaled the composites, they'd only be at best DVD quality with possible +4k acting. There has been great strides in the fanbase to try and re-create all the composite shots in hi-def rendering resolutions, but CBS has already said that the cost to re-do every single scene is too great and not worth it. I, for one, don't see why they can't; especially when they puke out new shows that people hate like Star Trek Discovery (I've not seen Picard or Below Decks yet but I heard they suck too). If they took the money spent on Discovery/etc, they could have made good run on a DS9/Voyager remaster.
  22. Well, top of the 30k's at least. Updated OP, DB, RSS
  23. Totally! Hope you have a good one!
  24. I got that VHS set too. Hosted by Leonard Maltin, interviewing George Lucas. It's in 4:3 though. I have the Special Edition VHS in both 4:3 and 16:9 but I think its actually just 4:3 letterboxed. Still, the best I had for the time. I still like the trailer they made for the Special Edition's. "For an entire generation, people have experienced Star Wars the only way it's been possible; on a TV screen. But if this is the only way you've seen it, the you've never seen it before..." Queue an X-Wing blasting out the TV.
  25. Speaking of the book read by Will Hwheaten?
