  1. Killer entry Cynicaster! Will it remain the top score? Time will tell! Thanks for participating! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  2. Not a bad game eh? I was just playing this the other day on my Retroid. I was testing something, don't remember what. But I forgot this game was in our competition, so I didn't bother playing it all the way. Still, I like this game. Thanks @ExedExes for suggesting it! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  3. Ask @millerbrad It sounds like he's got hurdles down to a science! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  4. Snow Bros. was a game I had never heard of until this competition. Another great reason for it (the competition), as it introduces many great games to players. I still don't have the knack for it yet, but it's it's a family friendly fun game that's easy enough to play. I, too, need to revisit this game. Updated OP, DB, RSS
  5. I only play single player games. I like the social networking that we get with current gen consoles, but I hate playing games with multiple people. Usually it's because they're better than me and too competitive. It's no fun if you're constantly dying because some kid is better than you. It's especially no fun when they're cheating. I don't play to compete with people, only myself. I also only play when I want to. I'm a casual gamer. I want to sit and enjoy myself, not struggle to advance my stats so I can move on to a new area. Anymore, developers seem to making games that appeal to to the hard core, multiuser, competitive population. They've forgotten about the gamers like me.
  6. Neo = Jedi Mind = Blown I really got to read and then watch this RPO stuff. I've got to stop retro gaming and work on completing my library. I OWN that book, and a 4k Collector's version of the movie, but haven't even taken them out of their plastic wrap yet! EDIT (slightly off topic) - Has anybody seen the newest trailer for Picard yet? Open up another can of worms over on the other thread about streaming services. But this has got me stoked!
  7. I need a better video card. My oDroid XU4 emulates Dreamcast, but only just barely. My computer I've had to recently rebuild with new parts from scratch due to our cat blowing the power supply and frying the mobo. It's got a sweet new i7 processor, but I'm still using an old GTS 250 video card. (Damn I just looked it up on google, it's 10 years old this year!). So I'm probably going to be in the market for a new one soon. The part I'm most concerned about is the output. My current card only has VGA and DVI. Most cards nowadays seems to have HDMI. That would be great, but how do you get audio through that? My current card I'm using a DVI->Hdmi adapter, it goes video only to my TV. Audio is done through the SPDIF coaxial to my AVR. If I get a new card with HDMI, do they support audio out through that? And if so, how does it get it from the mobo? My current motherboard doesn't have an internally accessible audio out pin header, so there's nothing to connect it. Do the new video cards just have onboard audio? Anyway, still following your build! Don't have the money to waste on parts, but it's fun watching. I still can't get over all your Sheldon Cooper trig math. Way over my head! lol
  8. Thanks for making me hate Star Trek now! Actually, I still want to live in the Trek universe. But after reading your rant, I think I'll just stick with the Star Wars universe, and realize that Force users are few and far between. So if you ever see one, they're basically gods. But if I lived in that universe, I'd probably still be what I am today, a deli clerk at a grocery store.
  9. Don't forget about the emulation scene, how we've been doing it for years and all of a sudden Nintendo decides to capitalize on it and build a mini version of their console that is essentially an emulator. It even runs ROMs, that they downloaded from the internet, with headers, rather than create their own dumps. SNES did the same thing, and so did the Playstation. Playstation didn't even create their own emulator, they just stole it from the open source.
  10. Like Draco said.. it's crap but easily modded and worth the price at this point. You can even get RetroArch on it and thus the entire collection of emulatable games it supports. The one hack I'm doing (not going to openly discuss the name or where to get it) just added OTG support so you can use USB flash drives inline with the power, so you're not wasting the 2nd player port. They're also working on adding network support via wifi dongles, so (in theory) you could do online match matching through RetroArch and even hook into RetroAchievements. It's actually kinda neet. Makes me want to go and find an NESC and SNESC. I know the Genesis is either out or coming soon too. That one I might just have to buy first run, because I was a Genesis kid.
  11. I don't care. I'll still just download the shows I want to watch, or record them on local broadcast to watch later. I refuse to subscribe to streaming services because they won't air shows on TV. I have an Amazon Prime subscription, which I use for the free 2-day shipping. The free streaming service it provides, along with access to my "movies anywhere" library is just a bonus perk. I don't watch Amazon only shows/movies. I have a Netflix account, because when I signed up it was free. I originally got Netflix for the DVDs, then they added streaming as a free bonus perk. Of course, discs by mail are going out of style, I doubt even Redbox is making much money anymore. But I was grandfathered in to the streaming service and only pay like $5 a month for it after I dropped the disc service. Here comes CBS All Access, that want you to subscribe to watch the new Star Trek shows. Guess what? I had it downloaded 20 minutes after it aired in Canada (because CBS wanted you to get their online service and wouldn't broadcast it in the USA) and then turned around and bought the Bluray. One time charge, infinite watches, and no monthly fee. HBO only has 1 show I care to watch, Game of Thrones. I don't have HBO, so I waited (having finished all the published books) for the announcement that the entire show is going to be released in a Collector's BluRay set. Already have it pre-ordered. So once again, 1 time charge, infinite watches, and no monthly fee. HBO used to be about premium movies, but if you waited long enough they would come on regular TV (maybe with curse words dubbed out and nudity cut...but still). We have tons of VHS tapes of movies from that time. HBO would run a special free weekend, and we taped. Now HBO looks like it's all about TV and not Home Box Office, like Theater Box Office. They've changed. Like MTV used to be about music. But yeah, anyway. If there is something I absolutely cannot live without seeing, I'll buy the BluRay. 99% of TV I watch is local broadcast on national channels like NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS. And lately, all I've been watching is NOVA on PBS and Simpsons/Family Guy on FOX. I'm not really feeling like I'm missing out by not subscribing. And I refuse to subscribe to 10 different providers for 1 show on each. Them's people's crazy.
  12. It would be cool though if Atari offered RetroArch on the VCS. Would eliminate the need to go into sandbox mode to do what I want. But still, like you said, Steam has a user database that collects all personal data for micro-transactions of everything you want to play. So there is definitely some tracking going on. There are a few games that are open source, fan created, etc games for various cores on RetroArch. So they could, in theory, provide those with the software. But once you open up the ability to run emulation of systems like Nintendo or Sega, you have to be willing to support the user demand for those games. If you don't provide a service to acquire them, but offer the service to play them, people will have to download illegally, which they will be able to track. At least on Retropie, the only tracking you're exposing yourself to is if you use the RetroAchievements site, which for the most part is safe because you're not BUYING anything. The only user data it tracks is a username/password/email. What I just love is that Steam has always had a tight-lipped, no discussion policy about emulation on their forums, now they're going to offer a program that does just that. It'll be funny to check in after it launches to see how the forums' rules change.
  13. Oh goodie. Let's make a "grey area" program be officially supported by one of the leading gaming companies in the world! But don't talk about emulation in the forums, because that's "piracy" talk and will get you banned. That also means don't ask for help, because we won't offer any. Oh, and now that you've installed RetroArch, you can't do anything with it unless you have ROMS, which you cannot discuss in forums either. I imagine the first hour it goes live, Nintendo will shut them down. Sure, the program itself is legal. But the first time you go to load it up, realize there's no games, and go download something, you're busted. UNLESS Steam is able to work out a micromart of some sort to offer buying ROMS... that would be interesting. But even at $1 a game, I wouldn't bother. Still, it is interesting that Steam is willing to do this, publicly. Now we just Xbox and Sony to follow suit, without us having to mod the crap out of the console.
  14. I bought one a week ago when it was $25, they were price-matching Best Buy. Now that I have it, I can totally see why it bombed. Sony tried to cash in on the Mini/Retro scene and flopped it big time. They offered 20 games, of which maybe 2 are worth playing. The only A-List games they included are Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid. They failed to include any games with their mascot (Crash Bandicoot), as well as platform defining games like Grand Tourismo and Tony Hawks. Instead, they included games nobody ever heard of or want to play, like Jumping Flash and Mr. Driller. They didn't include a power adapter, so you have to plug it in to an available USB port somewhere (like your TV). My TV doesn't supply enough voltage to even power it up. They also included original controllers, not even Dual Shock. So games like FF7 and MGS that USE analog and rumble are just left without. Nope, if it wasn't for the modding community and 3rd party addons like the 8BitDo dongles, I wouldn't have wasted my money. But I did, and thanks to those things, I was able to rip my copies of FF8, FF9, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, Resident Evil 2, Crash 1/2/3 and add them, and my 8BitDo dongle means I can use the wireless PS3 controller with rumble. Way to go Sony.
  15. It's not open to "anyone"... we are a close tight-knit community and these high score submissions are meant to be for those of us who have been around for awhile. Meaning, an active, supporting member of the site and a supporting user of the GameEx software. I'm sorry if this isn't what your looking for. We don't offer any prizes, and your fame will just be known as an annoyance around here. We had somebody come in, probably cheating (as many of his scores were better than those at Twin Galaxies (the "official" world record site)), snipe out and top our best players with un-matchable scores. He was rude to the admins, didn't adhere to the rules, and wasn't a supporter of the site or it's software. He was not welcome, and banned. That's not to say we don't want new players. Our "competition" has started to stagnate, and new players is always welcome. We just ask that before you start submitting scores, you must understand that we only want people who are actively supporting the forums and the software. With only 1 post under your belt, you're not exactly aged like fine wine, if you get my meaning. Hope you enjoy your time here though, and feel free to ask for help when/where needed.
  16. Yeah, it's one of my favorites! An easy classic. Updated OP, DB, RSS
  17. I'm still hopeful things will pick up eventually. I just feel like creating "feature contests" like the GOTQ is just a waste of time when you only get 3-4 participants in 3 months. That's why I suggested killing them off at 100 and just leaving the competition as is until interest picks up again.
  18. Got this one too! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  19. I gotchyou buddy! Updated OP, DB, RSS
  20. I saw a picture/meme on Facebook saying it took us 241 years, but we finally managed to sneak a mole into British ranks with Meghan Markle. Good times! Happy 4th! EDIT - Found it!
  21. Hard to believe unless you suffer them too... 4 days of migraine. I'm still trying my best to fight though them and continue to go to work. That's probably why my doctor still won't pursue looking into it further. If I actually missed work, he might be more concerned. But I can't afford to not work. Oh well. Anyway, here we go again! The next vote round for Game of the Quarter. This one will be for our fall competition up till the end of the year. Going forward after that, I'm not sure it's really worth continuing competition. Nobody is interested anymore. So to that end, I have another question to put forth in the polls. How should we handle it? One final voting round, ending out with 100 games? Continue like we are? Or just dump all the remaining "wish" games into the competition (so everybody gets their wish) and then no longer have a quarterly/monthly game? The choice is up to you. Remember, we have 3 months to vote, so think hard on it. If you have another suggestion of something to try, please comment below!
  22. Removed current GOTQ - Alien Syndrome. Please feel free to suggest more!
  23. Updated again! We're almost to 100!
  24. Here's our next game in the competition. Start posting those scores! I did a test run (mostly just to verify the default DIPS). It's a pretty good game. I had it on the Sega Master System when I was kid, so I might have a little more advanced knowledge/practice than others. I know in my home version, I made it to about stage 4. In my quick play through just now, I managed to make it to the 1st stage boss (there's one for each stage) and died shortly thereafter. One major difference I noticed is the top layer of graphics overlaying the screen, meant to be pipes in the way while looking "down" at the play field. It's kind of annoying, not having been there n the SMS version. But it's only mildly distracting and you forget about it after a while. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this game! I know I will!
  25. Alien Syndrome (エイリアンシンドローム Eirian Shindorōmu) is a run and gun game developed by Sega and released in arcades in 1987. Two players control two soldiers, named Ricky and Mary, who fight their way through large eight-way scrolling levels while rescuing their comrades who are being held by aliens. After they have rescued a certain number of hostages, the exit opens and they can pass through it in order to fight the end-of-level guardian. If this monstrosity is defeated, they are then able to move onto the next stage. Alien Syndrome features two player simultaneous gameplay and pickups which assist the player, including better weapons and maps of the current level. In 1988, the game was ported to the Master System, MSX, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, and Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System (published by Tengen without a Nintendo license). Later, the game was ported to the ZX Spectrum (1989) Game Gear (1992) and Sharp X68000 (1992), the latter being the only arcade perfect port. The original arcade version of the game was reviewed in the July 1987 issue of Computer and Video Games, where Clare Edgeley described it as "one of the most gripping games" she "played in months", praising the Aliens like horror atmosphere, chilling sounds, special effects, graphics and gameplay. She stated it was "the first time the atmosphere and sheer addictiveness of a shoot 'em up has transported me to another planet" and concluded that it "is fantastic."[1] The Master System version of the game was reviewed in 1989 in Dragon, getting 2 out of 5 stars.[2] The game was also converted to polygonal graphics for the PS2 as part of the Sega Ages re-release program and included in the US version of the Sega Classics Collection (it was removed from the European version to receive a lower age certificate). This version has updated controls, adding the use of both analog sticks, similar to that seen in Sheriff, Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV. The original arcade game was also included as an unlockable in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. A sequel of the same name, Alien Syndrome, was released for Wii and PSP on July 24, 2007. - Quoted from Wikipedia
