[DEPRECATED] Hi-Score competition - Mario Bros.
hansolo77 replied to MNMax21's topic in GameEx Hi-Score Competition

Heh that's part of my problem. I dont' have a smartphone, or any cell phone. I have an iPod (3rd gen) without a camera, and a Kindle Fire that only has front facing camera for Skype. I DO have a $900 dSLR camera though, but it's a pain to set up on a tripod and all just to take a quick snap. I'm game for some Mario if we wanna give it a go.

I remembered I can post a screenshot of GameEx while its in window'd mode.. so here's my current Mario (just 2 play thru's... the top is actually my first play through )
-
Something else I just noticed.. GameEx DOES parse the high score data if it's present and presents it in a menu. It's 3rd from last if you scroll down the menu lists (at least it was for Mario Bros...) Play This Game Request NetPlay (we really need more people doing this.. maybe build some kind of lobby with a built in chat room so we can decide what game to play? Marquee Flyer Panel Cabinet Title PCB Manual View Controls High Score (<- Shows at least the top 5 for Mario Bros) More... Add to Favorites info etc...

Yeah I loaded up the first Mario Bros. on my MAMEUI list. Played a game, set my name as HAN (only 3 letters). Exited, reloaded the same game, and it was still there! So I guess I did add the high score add on. Cool beans. I then loaded up GameEx and tried to run it from there. At first, it didn't have it. Then I realized I had loaded the first listed option in GameEx which was the Japan version. So I tried the next one, US ver E. It didn't have it either. But the next one, US ver F, did. So even running MAME through GameEx did load my previous high scores. Awesome. Now I just need a game to play. As for making the screenshot, I just hit PRINTSCREEN on my keyboard when the top 10 list was up, then I pasted in a new photoshop image. Unfortunately the image is all black. Probably because of the rendering mode/method. I don't see how this is going to work. I need a surefire easy way to make a screen grab without needing to do a lot of work.

I'm on board for this if we can get something started. I agree with a lot of what's being said here too. Where using wolfmame would be a good idea to prevent cheating, I agree with Draco that installing another version of MAME just for that purpose seems a bit much. I wish I knew if my version of MAME was compiled with highscores. I did it myself from what I remember, to get rid of nag but I don't remember if I included the highscore addon. I also agree with the whole 1-credit approach. Sure, it's easy enough to keep adding coins to the game and play indefinitely, but that's not the point. Anybody could best a high score that way. So there's really no point in trying. Anybody know what the keystroke is for MAME to take a screenshot? I'll have to load my GUI up and see if there's a command for it and some way to configure a save path. Then I can go and try to make some scores and get easy to find screens for it.

Things of this matter have been discussed before. The problem is getting somebody dedicated enough to follow through with it. Plans start moving but nothing ever comes to fruition. I would love to see something like this. It would help bring the community together. The real problem is having some kind of device to submit your highscores. Not everybody has a camera to take pictures. One method would be a software implementation through GameEx, and having say a menu item dedicated to achieving high scores, with the game listed, and maybe a top ten list. Then when you play the scores are submitted. The problem with that idea would be how GameEx would manage to capture those scores while you're playing. There may be a way though MAME, but I'm not familiar at all with how it would work.

Lol you guys are taking way more advantage of the offer than I did. I only grabbed 72 comics. Mostly the older stuff. I actually have the physical #1's for a lot of these and didn't see the need to grab the digital versions. To me, the digital versions aren't worth anything, and I just want to read them, which is what it's all about anyway.

Just an update, his project is now finished... He's posted a video detailing the whole thing. http://www.made-by-bacteria.com/unity.html

Yea I was just about to say KVM switch, but that seems like overkill for what you're wanting. The simple A/B switch for 2 vga->1 vga (first option Classic suggested) is probably all you need.

GUYS!! If you missed out on the Marvel #1's Promotion, they're doing it again, but you only have until the end of today (April 9th) to get signed up. Don't miss out! http://marvel.com/news/story/20431/marvel_1

WHAT?!! Thats crazy! George Lucas should never have sold out to Disney. It may turn out to be the biggest mistake of his life. If he hated being bashed and bullied while he was in charge, just wait till he see's what comes out of Disney. I had high hopes that Disney would be making great things for the Lucas Franchises. But this is insane to pull the plug on all things LucasArts. Next thing you'll see happen is Disney closing up LucasFilm too, and then Skywalker Sound and THX. I was looking forward to Star Wars 1313 too..

Graphic wise, I really like the Unreal Engine and Capcom's... Content wise, again Unreal, and the Watch Dogs looks awesome.

Thats really cool. I remember way back when Wreck-It-Raph was just announced and I posted here about it. Now there are people coding up games and making arcade cabs about it. You could play the FLASH version of that game on Disney's website. I didn't know there was a MAME remake out there.

Thanks Tom, always happy to see updates!

From what I can tell, it would probably work best with a touch screen, or some kind of mouse/trackball*+.. I managed to get MFME to play a game last night. It was Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring. You basically need to put the layout files in a folder and then the ROMs in the same folder so MFME can find them. Then you run layout the file and MFME starts the process running. There were 4 different versions of the game (all using the same ROM) that other people had come up with. Kinda like the way Pinball is, where you have the ROM but other people have different versions/quality of the tables. I was actually pretty disappointed in the quality. It was very grainy and pixelated. 3 of the games I couldn't actually PLAY aside from just having them running. There were no keyboard keys to add coins (like 5 in MAME) and no way to adjust bids, etc. One version of the game though DID have mouse support, where I could click the coin receiver to add money, and then could use the buttons at the bottom to spin and make adjustments of bids/multipliers. All in all though, the game was unplayable. Because it was such low quality, you couldn't see the reels, and the only sound I could get was from the ROM itself. I'm going to try a few other games today and see if theres some better ones. If not, I may just call this a bust and not worth it.

You mean like already configured GameEx settings? That's a great start for me. I'm still in the process of getting everything working outside of GameEx at the moment.

Sounds like a project I could work on then. Been looking for something to contribute... So there are 3 emulator platforms that I have found. MFME is basically MAME (Multiple Fruit Machine Emulator). The program itself though is not at all like MAME, but everything I see shows that it plays the most games. The next one is called JPeMu which is only capable of a select few games. The other one, only capable of a few games as well, is BFMulator. I'll work on setting up MFME first, since it has the highest capacity of games. I'll document my findings here. If anybody else feels they can provide assistance, please feel free to chime in to help me out.

Lol..I thought as much.. has anybody tackled setting them up in GameEx? Seems like it might be a huge project considering there are like 3 different emulators and not one can play all games.
-
Since this is game/emulator related and not GameEx specific related, I thought I'd post it over here... So our town passed a law that allowed gambling in the state a year or so ago, and they've been building a Las Vegas style casino ever since. It opened back in October, and I've had the chance to go there twice now. They have all kinds of games, but it looks like 85% or more is all slots and video poker. These are very fun to play. I've heard of "Fruit Machines".. is that what I'm looking for? I'd like to get some practice in before I return.

If you want to see what people have been playing, not just what they played last, you need to look them up on the website. Some people (like me) have the last played list linked to their sig.

Works for me, seems like you're too busy doing a LOT of things these days! Just don't forget about it.

Quick and simple! Thanks!
