Nice score! Good enough for 2nd! Already updated the OP. And you're exactly right. I look at this as a way to not only have a friendly competition, but to also relive the excitement of the old games. Who knows, we may get a newer game eventually. But for the most part, it's about enjoying the games we miss in the arcade and submitting our own personal best for others to try and beat on the own without the need to travel to that specific bar.

It takes time. My dad suggested a strategy that TwinGalaxies doesn't say you can't use... If you're about to pass a stage and can afford the life, DIE ON PURPOSE. The game will start up your next life at an easier level. He said this for Centipede, but I tried it on Galaga today and it does seem to work. The icons stay on the screen saying you're on stage 8 or whatever, but the difficulty is a lot easier. For instance, when you get up in the levels, the "bugs" fly around the screen a lot faster.. when I died on purpose, they were much slower. Also, higher up in the levels when the "bugs" fly onto the screen prior to going into formation at the top, some drop down to try to kamikaze you.. if you die on purpose they stop doing that, for at least a level or 2. It could just be that I was lucky and shot those kamikaze ones before they started to drop though. But still, it's a good strategy to try.

I don't know jack squat about Linux... I tried to build a Linux machine so I could make an HTPC that ran MythTV. That was before Microsoft released Media Center. I was so overwhelmed and lost I just gave up, and about a year later MCE came out and I was up and running real quick because I knew Windows. The only hurdles I can see with building something like this on that Raspberry device would be compatibility with hardwares. That was where my biggest problem was with the MythTV thing, because I didn't know how to get drivers and stuff for my devices. The nice thing about the Raspberry though is that everything is onboard except for the external USB stuff, and theoretically being USB it should auto-detect those said devices. But I don't know if Linux works that way or not. If you could get it all worked out though, I could easily see this being a great project. Maybe even have a Linux version of GameEx and then have all kinds of artwork and stuff built right in. You make me drool.

Well I played for about an hour after lunch, then I took a break to watch some TV. Then I went right back into it. 3 quarters in and I got the 100k+ score. I didn't want to submit a new score till I hit that mark. My next mark is going to be 150k before I post, if I make it there. The TwinGalaxies site though has people in the BILLIONS, like over 5 billion in 1st place. I'm ways away from that.

Hi-Score Competition - A question for Draco1962
hansolo77 replied to GimmeClassics's topic in GameEx Hi-Score Competition
Speaking of all this, has anybody seen Adultery lately? I think he's an admin/mod too and would probably have an input of his own to share. Just noticing he hasn't been on in a while. Curious. Anyway, I agree with the things that have been said and am fully supportive of whatever route this goes. A sub forum would be nice, but isn't really necessary at the time being, since we only have like 4 threads currently being active at the moment. Perhaps as time goes and more people partake in the competitions, we'll have a larger need for a sub forum at that time. It's nice to know that the "project" is still active though and there are people enthusiastic about the competition. It's all about the community and the games and bringing everybody together, which I think is what is ultimately being accomplished here. -
That's actually a really cool idea. I'm starting to think I need to get me one of those little guys for just such a project. I wonder what the filesize limit is for the SD card, like if you can get a 32gb card in there and have it still work?
-
Well I've been playing for a few hours and finally got a rhythm down. Still not as good as the top, but definitely doing better. It's on now guys! 105000, initials used HAN

This was never part of any official competition. When we first started, we were just making up game threads with a table of scores. Then we decided to put the games to a vote and just compete on 1 specific title per month. That way we wouldn't suddenly overwhelm the forum with lots of games all at once to be playing towards. You can still offer high scores and we'll update them to the tables. It's just not an "official" May game. I say "official" in quotes because we're not official by any means. It's just the idea is to spend more time playing 1 game instead of trying to beat scores on a bunch at once.

I hate to say it, but I think you're going to be upset with your choice in video card. A card with 128mb isn't going to be enough to handle much, and I don't even think it's DirectX-10. In fact, I have an EVGA GTS 250 1gb card (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5250626) and it's only just barely able to run some of the Model 2 games. Model 2/3 are (as far as I know) the latest generation arcade games and they're going to require a huge work system to be able to run. If I feel like it, I can play Star Wars Trilogy on my system, with 8gb RAM and an Intel I7, but just barely. The game runs slow, it's blockly, there's a lot of weird shapes and fields that display that shouldn't be there, the audio goes out of sync, there's lots of flashes from the graphics card failing on rendering, etc. It's not a pretty picture. But you can play it to point. Hell, even N64 emulation isn't quite there yet, let alone Atari Jaguar. But if you're really eager to get it working, it's nice to have and say you have it anyway. Just don't expect to get much playable results with it, at least not yet.

Updated OP with rtkiii's newest score! Better watch out too, cause I'm off tomorrow and I'm gonna be busting some quarters to earn a higher score!

Any Ideas On Where To Print DVD Cover's etc (UK Only)
hansolo77 replied to KRC's topic in Social Club
I had to do a lot of reprinting of my dvd movies because of the fire we had a few years ago. What I actually did was use a Color Laser printer and standard white matte Legal (not letter) paper. Legal is just 14-inches long versus the standard 11.. gives more room for trimming without worrying about printing right to the edge. Granted the paper isn't glossy so it doesn't look AS nice, but the effect of laser toner/fuser on plain paper makes it have shine similar to glossy with inkjet. In fact, if I print on glossy with the laser printer, it actually burns away the glossy texture on the paper, making it look worse than regular paper. The benefit is that laser prints wont bleed and "shouldn't" fade over time. It looks ok on my shelves because EVERYTHING is replaced with that same style paper/print. The new stuff I get like blurays and stuff all for the most part come in slip covers on top of the actual case, so they don't really match any of the other cases on the shelf anyway. And personally, I got so many things on my 2 book cases now, that I can't even tell which ones are prints and which ones were originals that didn't need replaced. Just tossing that out as another option. But I have heard in most cases, for small jobs an inkjet/gloss print is the better way to go. -
I agree with Krakerman; I like to make my own.

Updated OP with new high scores. Moved my score down to #6 but since this is all still in trial I thought i'd give it a chance and see how working with a top 10 might look. Thanks for the scores guys... keep it up!

We could get our resident artist to make up some medals, then you can attach them to your signature. I think some modifications to the forum would be required to add the extra things like medals under the avatars. I like the idea though, more props. Maybe just a simple signature/avatar banner that says "Top High Score (month)(year)". Anyway, I'll work on updating those new high scores to the table. @ClassicGMR - You sure you have that machine set on Very hard? It looks like a legit machine, and I'm weary of putting that score on the list if it's not legit. I mean, I'm sure you GOT that score, but did was it achieved using the rules? Just let me know ok?! EDIT: Just reread ClassicGMR's post.. he knew it wouldn't count. Cool.. Thanks for the post anyway!

Uhg you guys make me sick! I'm about to drop off the high score board, and I was the first one to post a score! WAHH!! I gotta play some more Galaga me-thinks. I need a day off to really try and push a score. I just got so much TV to catch up on now, it'll probably be a few days before I can play again. Keep the scores coming though!
-
Sweet.. I like the layout and colors. What really got my attention right away was the scrolling ticker saying what people are playing. If you can grab that information, it must not be far off from letting us build buddy lists in the system and let us have 2-way chat or something so we can team up and play some co-op or versus. Really like the ticker. --- UPDATE: My bad, totally forgot about the LIVE page (http://www.gameex.com/live.aspx). Still a pipe dream I guess.

Holy cow! That score is so high there's no way anybody could come close to beating it! I'm not even going to put that on the table, just to be fair. Heh. Seriously, you should submit that score to Twin Galaxies and earn some rep!
-
Nice. But I think the Xbox version is cheaper... I don't think they want $9.99 per table set. I could be wrong though. For anybody not aware, this is the best pinball out there for a new generation.
-
Sounds good, but how much? And what tables will it have?
-
Good job! Updating the Table! I'm still not able to beat my score. I hate sucking. heh
-
Nothing major to report. Just made a few minor cosmetic changes to the OP. Hope you're enjoying the competition!
-
Yeah that works too.
-
Updated OP to new table format.

Good call on this. I was going to discuss it with you to see what you think. I agree with what you said though so a discussion isn't necessary! For future reference, if GC's explanation is difficult to understand... You will only have 1 entry in the top 5. You can beat your score and we will update the table. So if you're in say #2's spot and you beat the score but not #1's, you'll stay in #2 but with the newer score. Does that make sense? Or am I completely wrong. Hehe. It's fun trying to figure this out to make it fair. I think the idea is that we don't have the same person taking all 5 top positions because nobody can best the #5's spot. - Han (ps; updating table now)

I was going to comment on that too, but I'm a bit late getting here today. I see where u-man would be coming from, by configuring games to be their easiest it would prevent excess cheating. However, Twin-Galaxies is a well established "standard" and I think it's best we follow their guidelines. We're not going to be as obsessively anal about proof like they are though. They want videos/dvd's of full on proof from plug in and turn on till they get their score. That's way more insane than our friendly little inter-user challenge. But TG's rules for each individual game should be kept to keep it fair.
