  1. Wow... there's no chance for me now. You sure you're using the HARDEST mode? Lol, updated OP.
  2. Looks fun. I definitely need to play more Super Mario. Watching that trailer showed some hidden blocks I didn't know about, and I thought I knew a bunch. Cool find.
  3. Heh I tried playing this earlier today, I can't even make it past the first level. I remember playing this on my old Atari 800 and I could get to stage 3 no problem. I'm way out of practice!
  4. Updated OP with new link and new high score!
  5. Changes made.. will update Galaga too.
  6. Just bumping with a 'LIKE' here... We need something to get the community more involved and this is a great way to do it. We've currently got 4 games in the run, but we'll be limiting it to 1 per month to help lower the posting spam in the forum (until it is deemed necessary to build a new forum for the activity volumes). Be sure to check it out and feel free to provide input, it's a community activity and we all need support.
  7. I agree, that's why I suggested we make a subforum for just high scores.. but agreeing to do just 1 game at a time seems fair too. I'll get a thread started with a poll and we'll see what game comes out.
  8. Lol that's insane. I browsed through the other strategies on that link too. Who does that stuff?
  9. Figured I'd get a couple of games up on the board here. Galaga is a hard game to play when set to the required HARDEST setting. I didn't want to post a score until I at least bested the 20000 top score on the game. So, unfortunately, my score is actually pretty low and should be easily beatable by the elite guys here. Figured we needed a shmupper here anyway, what better way to start? Score: 25070 Initials Used: HAN

  11. I dunno, I just cut-pasted from Twin Galaxies... I guess theres some kinda ingame exploit that if you get caught doing it you're high score is disqualified.
  12. I told my dad about the new competition idea and asked if he wanted to try out. He said no, but suggested we try to play some Centipede as he always had the high score for that at the arcade when he was younger. So I did it. It's hard to play with the controller stick, but when I discovered it could also use a trackball, I switched and it was much easier... Score: 13948 Initials used: HAN

  14. Yeah I know, you can go diagonally up for some reason a lot of the time.
  15. I dunno, my system was kinda buggy. I was watching TV on my computer (Media Center) before I went to work. I thought I switched it to standby so it wouldn't be running all day. Apparently I forgot, and it was stuck playing the local radar station. I turned on the TV/A-V Receiver and there was sound but no picture. I was able to ALT+CTRL+DEL and close down the Media Center's eshell program to bring my desktop back, but whenever I tried to do anything that used advanced rendering, like watching a VIDEO or playing a MAME rom directly, everything just crashed. I didn't get to reboot because my Media Center is actually recording TV (Just finished NOVA and is now recording the season finale of Duck Dynasty ). Anyway, I did some tweaking in my monitor properties, by changing my desktop resolution down and then up, and then the color to 16-bit and then back up to 32-bit. Now everything seems to be working fine. I still need to reboot, but it might be another hour. I was able to watch a video and I can now load up GameEx. So at least that issue is solved.
  16. I tried to load up GameEx today, but it's crashing. I had 13.9 installed, it autoupdated to 13.10. Now when it loads, the screen displays briefly (in a window) then crashes: 21:27:41.8 4/24/2013: Opening Configuration File 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: GameEx: Version 13.10: Starting Log 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Operating System Platform: Win32NT 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Operating System Name: Windows 7 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Operating System Version: 6.1.7601 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Aero running 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Initializing Vista/Windows 7 volume control 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Getting CPU and RAM info 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Intel® Core2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz, 6142MB 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: 2.4Ghz - 2 Cores or CPU's 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Running Randomize() 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Loading PlugIns 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Checking for applications to Launch On Startup 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Setting default net connection limit to 15 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Running Misc startup tasks 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Setting Menu types 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Getting Configuration Values 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Using Theme: Enter the Dragon 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Checking for alternate Image Directory for Theme: Enter the Dragon 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Initialising Video/MNG DLL's 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: GameEx will check for media insertion (may affect performance) 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Is Media Center running? 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Checking/Creating LCD Registry values 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Check Media Center Exit/Start Mode 21:27:41.9 4/24/2013: Media Center Mode 2 21:27:42.0 4/24/2013: Video previews on. 17. I'm a bit flustered (is that the word?) about going to a website to find the proper settings to use. Perhaps one thing we can do is link to the Twin Galaxies entry in the first post of the game's thread, or maybe just put their settings in the first post. Then maybe like above that in a big font have it show the GameEx current top score, with a link to the post in that thread with the screenshot. We'd just need to have the original poster of the thread be able to edit the first post to update it with the latest high score. If this project/activity really gets going, perhaps one of the mods or admins would consider opening another sub-forum dedicated to High Scores. Then each thread listed would be for that specific game, rather than putting all the games in the Social forums. That should also help people find the high scores easier when browsing the forums. Just and idea.
  18. Isn't the encyclopedia like 4 volumes or more? Last week I was in my shop and he was selling a bunch of volume 4 of the encyclopedia for like half price. I'd love to have the fact files though. Looks cool.
  19. No Fair! That looks awesome. I wish I could get it here in the states.
  20. Ok, I figured it all out! The problem is coming up with a way everybody can get a screenshot of their game without needing to use any extra software or special mobile devices. The obvious solution is to use MAME to capture the screenshot while it's playing. The problem with that (that I found out) is that if an image already exists in the /MAME/snap folder for that rom, a new image won't be remade. Maybe it's because the files are archive attrib or something. Regardless, just using the default settings in MAME to press F12 and capture a screenshot won't work if you have a nice and tidy setup completely with pre-existing screenshots. So the solution requires a little simple poking around in MAME's settings and then you can have MAME capture images for you in their own directory INSIDE the /snap directory, thereby allowing you to make new ones. Another nice thing in the setting I chose is that it will increment you're snaps, so you can have multiple ones (also fixing the inability to overwrite pre-existing images). While you can set up to use the incremential numbering in the root /snap directory, there are THOUSANDS in there, and finding the one you just took is way too complicated. So this method simplifies finding the image you're looking for! So here's the instructions! First of all, let me start out by saying I'm using MAMEUI for this, and it's actually MAMEUI64 as I have a 64-bit processor and Windows 7 x64. So your own settings might be different, but it shouldn't be that difficult to find... Step one is to click on the OPTIONS tab at the top of the screen. Step two is to click on the INTERFACE OPTIONS... menu item. Step three is to change the "Screenshot Pattern" option to "Gamename/Gamename + Increment" Step four is to play your game, press F12 to save the screenshot. When you go into your predefined path for screenshots, you should see a new folder using the ROM name, and inside that is newly created snapshot. Each time you hit F12, it should create a new image for you! Hopefully that will help make adding screenshots to post your highscores easier. Granted, using a mobile device to take a screenshot and post it directly to the thread would be great, but some of us (me, I know ) don't have such devices. And it's a pain to have to install more software to solve such a simple problem. Hope this helps the community out! Enjoy.
  21. According to http://strategywiki.org/wiki/MAME/Special_Keys if you press F12 it will save a screen capture. Only problem is, it saves it in the MAME\snap path, which should be setup to most of as having all the screen art for use in MAME (unless you're also using AVI Snaps.
  22. Don't have those.... There should be an easy internal way though. A lot of emulators have a key command like SHIFT+F12 to save a screenshot. MAME should have something like that somewhere. At least the PrntScrn button works in window'd mode for GameEx. Funny though, I ran a game of Tempest and set a highscore, but it doesn't list High Scores in the GameEx menu like Mario Brother's does. I wonder what the difference is? I checked, and it does save the score I set. Weird.
