I still think that's pretty cool. You guys get all the perks hehe.

Is it crashing while you're in a game? Try running the command outside of GameEx and see if it still crashes. This will eliminate GameEx from the equation. If that runs ok, then the problem is somewhere in your GameEx configuration. Try running this directly: cmd.exe /c C: C:\Emulators GameEx\MAME\mame.exe mmancp2u -rompath C:\Roms\MAME -nowindow -joy -skip_gameinfo

So I discovered yesterday that I already had everything I needed to play some games that were either NAOMI or Atomiswave, except for the emulator. I downloaded DEMUL and installed it. Everything it's compatible with playing plays great. However setting it up in GameEx is a bit of chore. I think the problem I have is that there's not a proper map file established for these systems. There is only 1 map file available to GameEx, and that's for the emulator itself. But the emulator is capable of running Dreamcast, NAOMI, NAOMI2, Atomiswave, and Model 3 (although not very good). When you setup GameEx using the built in configs, it tells the emulator to run a specific BIOS and then ROM upon launching. But it doesn't work. Instead, it seams, it loads up the emulator for the BIOS and then requires input from the user to select the game. I think this is because GameEx uses the same map file for all these systems. So when a game is chosen, it doesn't really know what BIOS it's supposed to use. It looks like we need a map file for each BIOS. Does that make sense at all? We need a map file for NAOMI, and a separate one for Atomiswave. Not just a DEMUL map. That way you can send the appropriate BIOS command to the emulator. I have no experience in this and have no idea how to go about building a map or setting it up, so I really need outside assistance on this.

Going way over my head. I hope it all pans out for you though.

Wow thanks for that link to NonMAME Freq! I learned that DEMULE has a lot of very nice playable games, so I went ahead and downloaded it. Apparently I already had most of the roms it lists in it's menus. I was able to test on NAOMI and NAOMI 2 and Atomiswave with that. Now I just gotta configure them up in GameEx.

You could design a simple GameEx theme without all the crazy bells and whistles for just such a project..

Reasonable and Prudent US Copyright Law? Did I Wake Up in Wonderland?

I think it's all completely ridiculous. I have a Kindle Fire. It's great. But if I buy an app for Android (which the Kindle is), I can't install it on the Kindle unless I've jailbroken it so I can install non-Amazon approved apps. Yet if I were to install some 3rd party hack to use my Kindle fully, I'm breaking the law, could go to jail if I'm caught, and can be fined like $250,000 all because I legally bought and paid for an app that I couldn't install. If you're curious, I'm speaking of the Marvel app (which is free). They don't have a Kindle version, and the Android version cannot be installed without first jailbreaking the Kindle. I don't want to jailbreak the Kindle though because if I ever need it serviced, I've voided the warranty and any support I could get. This is also true with stuff like Xbox 360 modding. It's illegal to modify your console to play backups. But it's legal to make a backup of a game you own. So how are you supposed to be able to play those backups (for protection of your originals) without first "jailbreaking" the xbox? And I'm a big supporter of 3rd party programming. There's things people have designed and programmed for the Xbox which is great, but you can only do it if you've modified the console to allow running unsigned 3rd party code. It shouldn't be illegal to enhance the capabilities of the console. I don't own a cell phone. But if I buy a cell phone for $300, I'd like to be able to use a carrier that I want, which has decent coverage and support for my area. I don't want to be limited to the type of phone I can get based on what carriers are available for it.. I should be able to get a really nice phone and a really cheap carrier if I wanted. As it is right now, the cheap carriers are limited to the $20 phones at the grocery stores. I want their services but not their phones. If jailbreaking an iPhone will give me access to a pay-as-you-go plan of $12 a month, I'm all for it. Governments need to just relax and realize there are benefits to circumventions that aren't all negative. -
Well if Naomi is the successor to Model 3, there's probably no way my system can handle running it. I think for the time being I'll just stick with what I got. I noticed that a lot of their games are on GD-Roms, which were a proprietary optical disc format that have their data on 1.2 gb "CD's". So with 300mb left on my game drive, there's no way I could even have 1 game. Thanks for telling me about it though. Always fun to learn about new stuff like that.

Yeah Tom is correct. The way I have mine setup is like this: START -GAMES --GameEx Arcade (online) v-Arcade ---MAME ---Sega Model 2 ---Sega Model 3 ---(any others, like Atomiswave, CPS3, Daphne, etc) v-Pinball ---Visual Pinball ---Future Pinball v-Consoles ---Atari 2600 ---Atari 5200 ---(etc) v-Handhelds ---Sega Game Gear ---Nintendo GameBoy ---(etc) v-Computers ---Atari 800 ---Commodore 64 ---MSX ---(etc) v-Direct Boot CD's ---Sega CD ---Sony Playstation -MULTIMEDIA v-Internet ---WebBrowser ---Radio --Pictures --Videos --Music --Books -SETUP/TOOLS -SEARCH EXIT

Well, yea, somehow manage to obtain the required parts that emulators require to play games from the arcade on your pc. I keep getting slipped up on that. Hehe. Anyway, I never heard of the Naomi. Do their softwares take up much space on the HDD? I'm eager to set up more stuff (I think at last count I have about 80 systems on my pc right now ) but I don't really have the capacity to add more. Just need a way to run that which I already have.
-
Cool, did you build that yourself or is it a repurposed find? I'm not unemployed but I can't afford to just buy the stuff I need to build my own cabinet. I thought about going to a junk yard and seeing if there's one just laying around, but you probably still have to pay somebody to either let you in and look around, or to take stuff out of it. The best ways are if you KNOW somebody who deals in those things and can get it for you dirt cheap or free. I wish I knew somebody like that.

It looks like DirectX is crashing when trying to draw GameEx after you exit MAME. I've had this happen to me a few times. Are you trying to run GameEx windowed and MAME full screen, or vice versa? I've found that this kind of error goes away when you're using either both full screen or both windowed, but not mixed. You can go full screen / windowed by pressing [ALT]+[ENTER]. Something else you could try is making sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, and the latest updates to DirectX. Check those things out and then report back.

Glad to help where I can.

Still seems like a lot of fun to try and actually get working. I don't have an arcade cabinet, or a control panel like the Tankstick, or the Raspberry Pi. But if Draco can some how manage to actually pull this off, I'd be very much interested in building my own as well. It would be ideal to just Plug in the control panels USB into the PI, and then just have a plug for the tv and a plug for the power and be off. Kinda like those all-in-one Atari joystics with 20 games, only for arcade machines. I want one. hehe

The thing I'm more concerned about right now is the roms. MAME has all these roms already included correct? Also, I remember Adultery and some of the other guys going through a lot of stuff getting another system setup called Taito Type X2. I'm not quite ready to go into that area yet, as I know for certain I'll have to expand my collection and I'm running out of space too. I have a 1tb drive dedicated to just these emulation games and it's only got about 300mb left.
-
Not to negate anything Draco has said.. but I think you need to look at how you have GameEx configured to handle closing the emulator when you finish playing. Sure, you're using vp-launcher. But you might need to include a separate line in the "LAUNCH AFTER" section to include something like: taskkill.exe /F /IM VPinball915.exe That should tell GameEx to launch the taskkill.exe program built into Windows and tell it to close the VPinball915.exe running application upon exit. But you really should post the files Draco mentioned in the 1st reply. That would allow other people to see your GameEx setup and see if you might have something in there that's missing or incorrectly configured.

Yup, one of the great things about this forum.

So we've all heard of MAME. The romsets you can get for it are all inclusive for the most part. What I've found is that included in the MAME sets are other systems as well. It looks like MAME itself is incapable of supporting many of the newer arcade systems, so independent developers are making their own standalone emulators for them. I know of and now have setup Sega Model 2 and Sega Model 3. I have also heard of Sammy Atomiswave and CPS3. There's also Daphne (laserdisc). I haven't, however, set those systems up yet. Does anybody know if they're really super difficult? Are there extra roms I'll need to get ahold of or are they for the most part included in the MAME sets?

Once I'm done updating my system and getting the new version of GameEx, I'm gonna try my hand at this game again. I just noticed I haven't posted a score yet, so it'll be fun to try it.
-
Looks like there might be a Linux version of GameEx. Tom just released a new version that specifically mentions Linux and Mac.
-
Wow cool, I didn't know all these games were Model 2. I have it all setup now, getting the snaps and whatnot from EmuMovies as I type. I see what you mean about the controls though. It looks like you have to configure them manually for each game you play. Kinda lame in that respect. But you're right, most games I tried to play run really good on my system. It must be the Model 3 stuff I'm having trouble with.
-
Just when you started to think Tom was busy on other things, he busts out another great update! Thanks again as always!
-
Wow I didn't know Star Wars Trilogy was a model 3. I wonder, does Supermodel play Model 2 games, or is there another emulator that I need to get? I've never actually tried to play any other games besides that one, so I'm curious if I'm good to go on others. The way I have my system setup is with the map file somebody made that identified the names based off the ROMs in the specified folder. I actually have all my ROMs in the MAME folder, and just have Supermodel pointing to that folder, then GameEx identified which ones were for it through the map.
-
What emulator are you using? I'm using Supermodel.
-
Yeah I should probably look and see if any other Model 2 games I have look any good. I really only tried Star Wars Trilogy cause that was THE GAME I wanted to play. You're right though, if you're only using integrated graphics, an addon card that's dedicated with it's own RAM will be significantly better. You won't be hoarding your system RAM as much to being devoted to just video. Oh and Future Pinball is awesome. But if you get the chance, you should check out Zen's Pinball Fx that's coming to Steam. I've been playing that more than anything on my Xbox.. I love it!
