  1. That pretty much matches my thinking...In the process of shifting all the gamefiles off my cab + onto my NAS. Next will be assets... I too am using drive mapping - just generally, UNC can be a bit 'sticky' sometimes. It's me being lazy and not chasing stuff down, but only so many hours in the day... One though did occur to me the other night. My WHS is presently expanding to a the WHS unit + now a second 4bay drive enclosure. The only thing is the cab cannot be truly stand alone with dependence on a server. I was thinking about setting up some internal hard-drives with the same folder structure as my network resources. Then, having a selection of game files and assets on the cab hard drive. This would mean if ever the server bombed, it'd still have stuff available. The only thing I'm wondering is whether there's an easy way to 'swap-out' the mapping against a network location to map it against an internal drive. For e.g. =- if your Network folder is usually "Y:" to disconnect this and then a drive in your PC automatically becomes "Y:" (and having the same folder structure, preserving all that lovely GameEx functionality) Haven't spent any time researching into it, but just spitballin'
  2. Dammit. Stop showing me stuff like this else I'll never be able to stop building and go outside again! Still impressed by that audio. How did you set that up - what're the components? Lastly, I thought I was a bit insane in this hobby, but this just blows gaming rig madness off the scale:
  3. I always want to replace the "s" with "zzzz".... "Dizzzzney" - it always sounds more contemptuous. They're just a corporation really aren't they - riding off a talented artist and innovator's name. Always feels a sad day when Disney swallows something (Pixar, Star Wars). It's like the ticking of a clock... Beware Tom - when Disney offers to buy you out, GameEx will have seen its day...
  4. Aha! That'll learn me for going for 'highly customisable' rather than 'end to end - closed system' all those years back. Thanks A - that did the trick + made life a lot easier!

  6. What's an NIC?
  7. I've had this problem for a while - it just sunked to the bottom of my list.... So when I close GameEx via any route (full 'formal' via menu; via the x in windowed etc) it appears to shut down, but continues running in the back ground. In task manager, sometimes in the Apps category, sometimes in the Background processes: From observing some plugin behaviours - it would appear as if GameEx shuts down then starts itself back up again (as I've observed a couple of plugins to start up again following shutdown). This is on more than one machine. It can be problematic as it can prevent GE from launching again - your having to go into taskmanager each time. It also make dev'ing plugins a ball ache!! Logs attached. Any ideas? EDIT: Forgot to say - does this even with all plugins disabled. log.txt GameExOnlineLog.txt background_log.txt
  8. That's an inconvenient truth I've been trying to avoid for years! Never thought about replacing all my ethernet cables! Have gradually done it with switches etc, but still got some legacy stuff in my network in places.. Good steer, Draco - thanks
  9. Excellent Shermo. Good to know + thanks for the feedback. It all sounds fine.
  10. So I'm wondering how everyone sets up their rigs. In particular, where they store their gamefiles and assets. I've got a home server here, so I'm wondering about the benefits and drawbacks of storing all my gamefiles and assets on my home server and pointing 'client' games rigs towards these networked files.... Gamefiles: I'm wondering if any emulators need ongoing, speedy access to the gamefile or whether they 'load' them into memory/temporary stores somewhere? If the latter - shouldn't be too much of a problem storing these on a NAS? Assets: Same kinda question really - do any frontends/support apps need videos/images/pdfs etc to be available with the increased speed availed by local disks? If not then should also be golden in terms of Assets on a NAS? Naturally, I would assume that emulators + frontends are best on the client machines....

    gameex 14.44

Yes. If you tap it lightly, it'll likely shake loose...
  12. "A bit of a Swiss Army knife..." This plugin does various stuff. It's main aim is to make running multiple emulators for each system as easy as possible. You can setup all your emulators in GEmvoy first - running and testing them from there before dovetailing with GameEx. You can also choose which Emulator to launch a game with from GameEx itself. Lots of additional stuff. Best way to find out what it does - download it and have a tinker - it's very low impact on GameEx; your game and asset files + your existing setup, so you can't break anything. Features: Quickly launch zipped gamefile sets without having to wait for them to unzip. Have different system emulators mapped against one GameEx 'emulator.' Be able to choose which emulator boots a game from the Game Details page in GameEx. Simple approach to mounting gamefiles Test emulator/games setups before running through GameEx - boot games in "Fullboot" or "Setup boot" modes. Can work with multi-format gamefile sets for one emulator (e.g. Playstation sets with mixtures of .cue, .mds etc.) Save emulator settings on per-game basis, allowing for different graphics, sound and controller setups for each game. Launch support apps before, alongside or after a game boot on a per-system, emulator or game basis. Full tokenised game/system/emu details allowing insertion of these into any command lines. Make your own emulator settings scripts, swapping out files, folders and registry entries between game boots. Key-remaps on per emulator or game basis (experimental) Timelapse picture capture via webcam during games. Continuous, timed or burst mode. GameEx tweaks allowing: Choose which sounds to use for the GameEx menu Choose to use random sounds for the above Relocate the message window from the bottom right User prompting throughout any unzips showing progress. 13. If they mess about with the DTools command line syntax one more time, I will not be accountable for my actions...

Interestingly, I have 2 weeks off and a bit of a bathroom revamp to do myself... DIY...coding...DIY...coding...hmmmmm. Oh I know! Coding..

  15. It's confirmed! It was a very simple exercise that saved me a lot of money. A hoover and a can of compressed air. And bingo! No more artefacts or weird GPU behaviour - it's like when I first got it. Presently enjoying Wipeout 3 in HD + as smooth as ice tthurman - that's one major owe! Thanks dude.
  16. Many happy returns, dude. Hope you don't feel too woof the next day... *sorry
  17. Nemmind. Nailed it: Brilliant. They've gone back to numbers... their documentation sucks - found it on DTAGent -help. So, e.g.: DTAgent.exe -mount scsi, 0, "f:\test.iso" You must create the drives first in DTools. These guys are just bonkers.
  18. What was the DT update? 10.3 has broken my command line (again!)
  19. Happens dude. One thing the little buggers cant control is how many times you try again....
  20. How's it going?
  21. I think tthurman may have just saved me £500.
  22. Nice one fellas. Looking like reccs matching my gut feelings about Intel i5 or i7; nvidia gpu. The gigabyte steer's a good one as had a couple of boards that have failed. Sounds like Corsair's a cert too. However, ripped apart my dev rig, blaster it with the hoover and compressed air; electronics "cleanered" all the contacts on the cards and slapped it all back together. So far so good (as the bloke who fell off a building said). Also blasted my home server too + now it's humming like a content puddy cat rather than hooting like a demented walrus. Cheers tturman, dude. If this work, I owe you a pint.
  23. Thanks t. Lots of food for thought. Ill try cleaning the gpu, although had a quick look and didnt look too bad. However, ill check it into theatre and open her up...
  24. So my first effort at building a PC 3 years ago has finally given up the ghost. I think I mixed and matched things too much! Lots of weird graphical artefacts and have no idea whether it's the mobo or one of the GPUS (Radeon HD5800) - either way - think it's buggered. I can salvage some of the parts, namely the SSD, after-market cooler, case, fans and PSU (600w) + drives etc. leaving me to source: - Mobo - CPU - GPU x 2 (to run 3 monitor support) - guessing one powerful one (run games on) and one functional (as would only be holding windows - no gaming etc) Only other requirement being ATX to fit the case. Looking to bring this in at under £500 (UK money) I don't know why, but it feels wise to stick with Intel and NVidia. However, happy to be advised otherwise General purpose machine - some gaming, image + video manipulation and coding. You guys are good at this stuff - what would you advise?
  25. I agree Hans. Like, I've only killed 2 people. Video games never did me no harm... *twitch
