  1. I'm connecting my laptop to my cabinet and running MAME + a couple of PC games. However, when launching the MAME games, HideOS seems to steal the focus (not everytime though) and I have to ALT+Tab to get to the game of choice. How do I find out why? It seems like games that loads the fastest mostly. The PC games works flawlessly. I'm using a custom build (0.122 built with Headkaze's app) without warnings etc. Emph
  2. Looks very clean and awesome. Emph
  3. Also, if it supports 25khz it might be referred to as dual-sync. It's not that important though, as most arcade games run at 15khz (lowres). Emph
  4. If I were in your shoes, I would buy a really cheap ATI card and install in the DELL. First check the classifieds in your local paper or eBay. If you find a nice card, check it againt the supported cards in the Soft15hz forum. Should be able to get one for a couple of bucks. Running on that arcade monitor is the way to go, believe me. If it has 25khz it might even support higher resolutions like 640x480 (like I'm running on my EGRET II) and it looks awesome. Emph
  5. I have an onboard video in my laptop (with LCD screen) and it installed just fine. I then hook my laptop up to my cabinet with no problems. I made a hotkey to switch to 640x480 (what I run in my cab) and the external screen adapter. This is how it looks for me: (The two options greyed out here are already installed) If your adapter is supported, it should show up to the left. Emph
  6. 1. Fight Club 2. Amelié These are easily the top two. Other faves are Undercover Brother, Superstar (Molly Shannon is hilarious) and The Big Lebowski. Emph
  7. bkenobi: Thanks, I know. Perhaps I will give it a go. Emph
  8. I'll have a look at PimpDaddyStu's suggestion. But I'm not really keen on the idea of having to install AutoHotKey just for this. Clicking it manually is almost as good. Tempest: Thanks for your help, but as I'm going to switch resolutions using a hotkey I've chosen in the monitor preferences (this is not a dedicated gaming machine) this won't work. Emph
  9. I have setup my laptop for gaming and for surfing/other apps. When I hook it up to my J-Pac I use a hotkey combination to disable the built in LCD and output through the VGA to the J-Pac. This far everything is just dandy, but windows insists on popping the question "Keep this resolution? YES / NO" and that's really inconvenient. Is there any way of disabling this? I have an onboard ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 running Omega Drivers, but I haven't found that option anywhere in the Omega options, so I'm guessing it's a "feature" in XP. It's very good if you don't know what you're doing, but it should be easy to deactivate, right? Emph
  10. I've sold my homebuilt cabinet recently. But now I have something that "suits my needs" a little better. A Taito EGRET II! (The left picture is taken with a flash and the right is without, it's just 1 cabinet ) 29" dual sync monitor Stereo sound Easy monitor rotation mechanism (even though this will probably be in vertical mode all the time) Plenty of room inside Full JAMMA harness (so I can play my PCB's, this is a feature that made me sell my old cabinet since it was MAME only) See more pictures of the EGRET II here: http://www.zax.com.au/egret2.html I'm gonna put in new Seimitsu joysticks and buttons soon, this has been in a Japanese arcade, so the controls are pretty much worn out. I'm waiting for another sitdown cabinet with a 29" trisync high res monitor to arrive from China that I'm gonna use for horizontal games. Emph
  11. I've gotten my hands on a J-Pac and hooked up to my JAMMA cabinet, using Soft15hz and running GameEx @ 800x600 on a vertical screen (so it's really 600x800) but I can't seem to get the fonts to be big enough. It looks like this now: I've tried setting the fonts to "biggest" and "Arcade Mode" to 'on' in Advanced Configuration, in my custom theme I've set "Arcade Mode" to 'on' and font (Verdana) size to 72. Font Outline and What have I missed? Edit: Got the font sorted out. Redid the theme from scratch using a V2 640x480 theme. Looks better now. But now I have to fix the "deadzone" on top/bottom (All my games fit the screen perfectly, just got to fit the frontend). Illustrated in the screenshot with darker areas. Emph
  12. Thanks. Emph
  13. Yes, that's the one! Thank you very much sir. Emph
  14. I remember seeing that someone had made a very small app that was free and created video modes for Windows that worked on an arcade PC without the need for an ArcadeVGA card. It's not VGA2TV or Powerstrip (not free). It appeared here (or on Arcadecontrols) less than six months ago. Anyone? Emph
  15. I've dropped the "one screen per each game" idea I had initially (see post # 6) because I wanted to use GameEx in-built MAME list generation instead of setting each game as a single emulator as this is way too much work. As this skin is for modern shmups first and foremost (CAVE, Raizing/8ing, Psikyo), I might work up a more generic background that suits the objects layout (gamelist, preview field) and works with all kinds of vertical games (just something plain and pretty). More tweaks are needed and then there will be a release. The theme will also include a .psd-file so people can do their own backgrounds. Emph
  16. I've made a small video of my Theme if someone is interested. It has a very nice "field layout", i.e. the snaps/imgs are large and the gamelist has lots of room. http://rapidshare.com/files/96710168/Verti...ontend.avi.html Emph
  17. I request this thread to be a sticky. Emph
  18. Well, I got it to work finally. Emph
  19. Okay. I'll try to run @ 800 x 600 and see what happens. Thanks a lot. Edit: Yes, that worked. And I'm using backgrounds @ 1280 x 800, so it does look great even at a non-native resolution. Emph
  20. Thanks Tom. However I can't even get GameEx to rotate at all on my laptop. I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 with Omega drivers if that's somehow an issue. I have set GameEx to rotate 90 degrees by default since I plan to only play vertical games on this machine. But it does not rotate. Nothing happens if I press [TAB] either. Also, each time I start GameEx the loading screen shows, then the whole app is minimized, showing my desktop instead. I did remember reading a topic title sometime about "minimize on startup". Will do a quick forum search for that... It really is frightening how fast you forget how stuff works when you shy away from the whole MAME thing. Or am I getting old? Thanks Emph
  21. I'm gonna use GameEx on my laptop just to play vertical shmups and thought I'd give it a go creating a vertical theme. I'm gonna do it for my native resolution of 800 x 1280 (vertical) and would like to know what resolution would be fitting for an arcade monitor? I might as well create one for that too. It should be interesting for some folks, right? Is there currently a setting in the Theme Editor for editing a vertical theme? Headkaze? Emph

    Best OS

I use XP Pro SP2 in my cab. It boots up directly into Gamex under 30 seconds. I think that's really fast. I've uninstalled a lot of unneeded programs/features and ran the free GameXP application ( http://www.theorica.net/gamexp.htm ). I have installed Bootscreen with a MAME bootskin ( http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?lib...amp;search=mame ) that matches my marquee. Changed the logon background colour to black ( http://www.tweakxp.com/article36800.aspx ) and installed InstantSheller. That's all I did, I guess you could optimize more and hey, if you find out some easy tweaks, let me know. Emph
  24. This I/O remake looks good: http://www.merseyremakes.co.uk/gibber/io-the-remake/ Emph
  25. Made a small webpage for my project from start to finish: http://www.emphatic.se/mamecabinet/ Emph
