Battle Damage - Unofficial Star Wars Hype Thread

Interesting post. Thanks! Still feel bad about the new bad guy's lightsaber with it's cross beams. I also don't like how they kinda spoiled the reveal with the Finn concept art. Oh well, can't do anything about it now. -

So is it really worth buying an Xbox with the Kinect? I looked at Amazon and Gamestop and it seems like you don't really need it. I remember all the upset from when the console first came out because it came with the Kinect, and it was REQUIRED, and it took a lot of CPU resources. Now that you can get it without, is it worth buying one with it for those games that use it? Or is it better (the way I'm probably going to go) to just buy the console alone and if a game comes out that I really want that uses it I can get it then? The price difference is like +$30 or so. -

My rig doesn't even come close to minimum requirements. But I just heard that the XBONE will now support backwards compatibility to 360, so I'm definitely in the money saving mood. This game don't come out till November so I hope/believe I have plent of time to get it together. -

DAMMIT STOP TEASING ME!!! I don't have a next gen console, I won't be able to play this. Anybody out there wanna buy me a XBONE? -
Yeah we had 2 different sets. One was small cars that used metal plates on the tracks that also climbed walls and had a loop on the track. Then we had a larger car version where they were metal braids that made contact to the tracks but the track was a really short figure eight that ran on 4 D-Size batteries. The small car one was AC powered. Also the small cars actually burned out their metal plates long before we were done playing, so we had to buy new ones. Don't know what happened to my sets. I miss those days.

Does anyone have a recent version of MESS they could upload?
hansolo77 replied to Vic Rattlehead's topic in General
You should be able to find an older release on their website then just compile your own version using HK's program. In fact, you should be able to just compile MESS outside of MAME. I haven't bothered to look into it recently... Have a look here: http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/misc/mess.html They have 0.161 there precompiled. Hopefully that will suffice. -
We don't make the rules, we just live by them! That was how TwinGalaxies has their competition set up, to use HARDEST. DID NOT UPDATE OP, DB, RSS It seems the game is missing from the DB? I'll need GC to re-supply the banner for me to re-create it.

I've still not ventured into water cooling yet. From what I remember reading, it wasn't really perfected (although it does look like it now, it's been years since I read up on it). You have to have specific parts for the different things you're going to connect to it (like, the right kind of CPU for the provided CPU cooler, and the right kind of video card for the GPU cooler). I don't think it's available generic (everything fits everything) but I could be mistaken. One thing I'd like to maybe do is some kind of water cooling for HDDs. My home server is in desperate need of upgrading (running a "Designed for Windows 98" cpu....). When I finally get around to do it, I'm going to get a massive Full Size case, all with hotswap drive bays. I'm sure there are things like water cooling "sleeves" you can put each drive into, if not they need make some. My server only runs hot because of all the heat from the HDDs. Also, how cool does it really make everything? Are you running liquid Freon through the tubes? I'd imagine not, that it's just water. Over time, that water's gotta get warm and then it really doesn't do any better than fans. I suppose you could put ice cubes in the reservoir. Or are those now temperature controlled like a fridge? The coolest (heh cool) mod I ever saw was somebody running their computer from inside a deep storage freezer. And then I saw one where some guys had some sealing spray can and basically sprayed down their mobo/ram/etc then submerged the entire thing in an ice cooler full of liquid nitrogen, then they ran a modified version of their overclocking program and were running a 2.4 ghz cpu at like 50ghz and the temp stayed around -300 or something. That was sick.

Interesting, but I gotta ask... WHY?

Battle Damage - Unofficial Star Wars Hype Thread

Man, I wish I had a better job. Who would just drop money like that? I'd love that Darth Vader one though. Still, 3X the cost? I'd rather just get the regular one. -
Yeah I hit another little hurdle today with it. I repartitioned the drive outright, not even bothering to look at the files (kinda wish I did, would have been educational/interesting). I created the drive with 1 partition and gave it drive letter Z so I could easily find it when I plugged it into my 14-drive server. Unfortunately, it wasn't being detected (gulp!). I played the disconnect/reconnect game a few times, then hooked it back into the other computer and it found it right away. Turns out, my server has a drive not of the storage pool that I have designated Z for torrenting, and it never occurred to me that my new drive was using the same letter. I ended up just clearing out all the partitions, then connected it to the server. Windows Home Server console picked it right up and quickly re-partitioned it and added it to the storage pool. I now have 14 drives, totalling 12TB of space. Of course, it's really only 6TB because folder duplication on everything essentially cuts it in half. But with faulty drives not lasting long, it has definitely been worth it! This discovery couldn't have come at a better time either! One of my drives in the last week has been throwing up lots of CRC errors, and HD Sentinel has been reporting +68 sectors reallocated here, then +152 there, and then today it was up around +368. It was already on it's last legs when I installed it a month ago. I needed some temporary storage and hoped the drive would last long enough for me to move some large files around. It did, served it's purpose, and is now replaced. HD Sentinel reports that this drive has only been completely power cycled like 6 times since it was manufactured, and has only had a power-on time of like 125 days. Some of my server drives are reaching +2000 power-on days lol. Pretty nice. I ran a chkdsk surface scan on it just to be sure it wasn't bad from being tossed in the dumpster and it came back 100%! I'm happy about that. Now I'm hoping more people are dummies and throw more of them away!
-
So I took the drive out and plugged it into my computer. Wouldn't you know? The drive wouldn't power on! ARGH! I did some research, and found this: http://www.wikihow.com/Reformat-and-Use-a-Dish-Network-DVR-Hard-Drive-with-HDPARM-Tool Turns out the drive is programed to boot up in standby mode and then are "woken up" from the DVR, which standard computer controllers aren't made to do. So I had to use this utility called HDPRAM to reprogram the APM feature on the drive so it would work. Pretty sneaky. Glad I found that, I was about to be really pissed lol!
-
That's probably what I'm going to end up doing. I tried searching for a way to hack it to allow me to install Linux or something but it doesn't look like anybody's bothered to come up with a way or reason to do that. Kinda bummed, it would have been nice to set up a streaming media client that wouldn't require my huge computer to be powered on all the time. Oh well. Still, a heck of a good deal on a 2tb drive!
-
Checked "under the hood", it has a 2tb hard drive! Who would just chuck this in the trash?!
-
So I was taking out some trash to our dumpster out front, and found somebody had thrown away what looks like a brand new Dish Network kit. It had the box, full of Styrofoam and what not. Then thrown on top of that was the dish itself, and then tossed beside it was the DVR. I didn't bother with the other stuff, but I went ahead and grabbed that DVR. Once safely inside my home I looked at it better. It's a Hopper model with Sling. It still has the protective clear plastic on the front, and inside the door the Smart Card was still in the slot! At first I was thinking of taking it apart and salvaging the hard drive, but then I got to thinking... can I use this possibly as a media client or something? Since it has Sling, maybe? I didn't see a remote though, so I'd have to figure something out with the Universal. What do you guys think?

I've never been to DC. Looks awfully crowded.

I'm not much for country music, but this is a very good song. Kinda gets you right there ya know? Thanks for sharing.
