  1. I agree that different drives are best, but is recommending these small drives really a good thing? For example, I took a 20GB drive out of the closet when I was putting my file server together for exactly this reason. The drive is plenty big for a basic WinXP install with all patches and all programs that are needed. I then have the hardware RAID card manage the RAID5 array. Everything works fine except for one thing...the system drive is loud and slow. Since nobody makes a 20GB drive these days, the only options for that would be old units that are either pulled or NOS. If it's pulled, you are taking a chance that you will get to set everything up again when it dies. With either, though, you will end up with a slow (by today's standards), loud, energy hungry (well, that depends I guess) drive. Oh, and it doesn't go into idle very well as the drive continually wants to spin up and then down at seemingly random times. If you are looking for a 4GB drive, you are even worse off! I have several smaller drives in the closet as well (2GB, 2GB, 5GB, 8GB, 10GB, 20GB, several larger...). Those 2-5GB drives are from the late 1990's. I haven't checked specs, but I'm pretty confident they won't be very fast or quite either. Basically, I agree that separate drives is best, but I'm not sure that you will get the full benefit if you use those small drives over combining everything on one modern drive. I haven't done any testing though, so I could be wrong. PS: Here's a chart showing HDD size over time. I think it shows approximate ages for my drives PPS: I guess there is one way to get a smaller drive without getting old equipment... If you get a laptop drive, you can get down to ~30GB pretty easily. The problem there is that the cost/GB is MUCH higher than buying a larger desktop drive. Anyway, just my 2 cents...
  2. Yeah, sticky keys is really a pain for cab users. Once you get it turned off, you should be good to go though!
  3. If you are changing the text, you must be using the Advanced Config Tool. On Text/Language(1), the top box is the language selection tool. If you are customizing your text, you need to change this to "- CUSTOM -".
  4. It's actually "Treat as 1 PC game". It tells GameEx that the emulator is intended to be used with just a single game. The main thing this will do is load the game directly rather than bringing up a menu of roms to pick from.
  5. The Topguns *should* work without hardware. The Guncon's *should* work out of the box as well. The problem is that the Namco guns are apparently fancy and can work on both HD and SD CRT's. They apparently seem to default to HD when run with a PC. I thought I was getting a better gun, but now that I read more about it, I may have been wrong. Here's the problem with them. They will not work correctly with the guncon2pc driver (Acorn's driver), but they will work with WinGun (Smog's driver). WinGun treats each gun as if it's a single mouse, so you it apparently doesn't play nice with current versions of MAME. The guncon2pc driver treats each gun as if it's a separate mouse, so you get separate axis. It *should* work with current versions of MAME. The problem is that the NAMCO gun cannot work with Acorn's driver due to the "rolling X" problem. Smog's driver was specifically designed to fix this problem, so it will work there. Smog pulled his site down for some reason, so unless you have a copy of the driver "WinGunV0.82B.zip", you are SOL. I do, but I didn't like it as much as the guncon2pc version. At this point, I'm just going to try to get things working with an older version of MAME and the WinGun driver so I can play some games. I'm hoping this will allow me to use it with some PC titles so I can get enough quality games to make the trouble worth it.
  6. My bad. I forgot the rule.
  7. You won't have this issue since you have LCD Topguns. I didn't go with those this time either after reading that you have to be ~3x the distance from the screen as the distance between the bars. That would damn near put me in the next room! Your guns will work correctly out of the box either with the Topgun's driver or the Guncon2Mouse/WinGun driver since yours are based on where the gun is pointing and not where the scan line is located. I've read I may have an issue with using these since this gun works better with 100Hz CRT's and my set is 60Hz. I really didn't want to buy yet ANOTHER set of guns, so I'm really hoping these can work. The other thing is that these do look pretty damn cool!
  8. I wasn't arguing about whether it was better or not. I was saying you were a retard The search term you posted that first time was "gameex.info" which returns the entire forum. I know what you meant, I was trying to call you out. I'll try to use English humor next time. Perhaps I should get an interpreter to get it right though. I'm not clear if I'm supposed to use squirrel fishing for all jokes or just specific ones.
  9. Minimizing is almost always an issue with another application stealing focus. It's possible that you have "sticky keys" enabled in Windows (it's on by default). If so, it will open a popup dialog that asks you to enable sticky keys. It basically tries to help if you're keyboard is...well...sticky. You have an ipac which sends key strokes. If you hold down a button, it will continually send the same key and Windows is probably interpreting it as such.
  10. Ok, you caught me I actually never thought to read the MAME FAQ since there are other oddities that I've run across that don't provide an easy set of search terms. -= WARNING =- This thread may get slightly off topic below -= WARNING =- For instance, I'm just getting around to setting up my new Namco GunCon2 controllers with Guncon2Mouse (or WinGun) and am experiencing a problem with the mouse cursor jumping across the screen from the right side to the left side as I move the gun from left to right. I don't have a clue what to put in google to narrow it down. This wasn't a problem with my Scoprion3's, but it is with these different guns. Makes it really tough to play PC-10 Hogan's alley!
  11. Thanks for the instructions. I don't understand why I couldn't figure it out. PC-10 games are obviously SOOOOO intuitive Oh well, at least I know it's possible to play them now!
  12. Yeah, I've never been able to get PC-10 to work either. I added "PlayChoice" to my filter list and moved on.
  13. HK is a bit leery about letting relatively new members in on the project simply because we had a problem in the past with our last database effort. A LOT of time was spent by several people and we had a nice set going. At some point, relationships were tried and the project fell apart. When that happened, work that had been submitted to the community was requested to be removed. Since Tom tries to keep things amiable around here, he complied. The result was a loss of everybody's work for the community. Basically, we just don't want to have hard work and people's valuable time lost. Hey, since you have been a member since 2006, maybe HK will let you in! That's where all the cool kids hang out, so you know you want to join!!!

Tom won't be able to help unless you upload the entire log file. There may be some important bits of info that are up near the top that you haven't included.
  15. The trigger is an analog control, correct? I'm assuming what happens is that when you press the trigger it starts sending escape until you let up fully. That means that it exits the emulator with escape and then sends it a few more times so when you get back to GameEx it will also see you hit escape and exit as well. There are 3 solutions I can make. 1) Turn off exit via escape in GameEx. I don't know where it is, but the setup wizard search feature should find it pretty easily. 2) Use a digital button on the controller. I think this a problem because the control you chose is analog. Digital should only send escape once (unless you hold the button down for a long time). 3) Write a script that will send escape for the emulator but not send anything if GameEx is active.
  16. I think PSX is probably the most common one, isn't it?
  17. I personally find it distracting when one character is super high-res and 3d while the other one is all blocky and poor quality. Also, you will find that each person that develops a character uses a different scale for the character strengths. As a result, Ken may be able to easily beat Wolverine with one set of characters, but with another it's a well matched fight. If you want the best experience, you might be best suited to find a setup that was built from scratch by a single person. There are a few that I was able to find a while back. The only down side (sorta) is that the build is specific to what that person wanted and not necessarily what you want. It will also prove to be less upgradeable (well, unless you change everything...but that defeats the purpose now doesn't it).

You can also just use the new database Tom just added: [Arcade] MAME.mdb
  19. If the problem was -noswitchres, I highly recomment modifying your mame32.ini file to change the 1 to a 0 in the switchres line. That way you don't have to worry about adding the command line parameter. Just how I would do it...either way works though.
  20. What, so that's supposed to make it better?!
  21. This seems like a bug since Tom surely didn't intend on having GameEx minimize when you select something on the second screen. Well, I'm assuming that wasn't his intent. If it's a bug, then it should be dealt with here. If it's considered a new feature, then it should be added to the features request thread. I guess I'll have to let Tom speak up on this one.
  22. That means that because Tom and HK don't use the same format, it's going to cost us on the order of $0.007 extra! BASTIDS!!!
  23. I forgot to add Pikatchu to my Mugen!
  24. So is step 2 based on Tom incorporating your request?
  25. The only reason I would combine them into a single install is if I really wanted to have a 4 way with Popeye, Mario, Ken, and Sponge Bob. Seriously though, it just depends on your preference. I don't really have any desire to play anything outside of the realm I listed before (the big 4 fighting groups). There are a couple misc characters that wouldn't hurt, but I don't need every player ever developed. If I were going to have that type of install, it would be separate from one(s) that were more typically used.
