There have to be files in the repository in order for the downloader to work in the setup wizard. That's not intended to be a negative comment, and the plan may be to keep these current moving forward, but you'll notice in the link that I provided that many of them will update with each Mame release. At the same time, some rarely do.

BIOS devices are for the software lists which GameEx currently does not support. Look for this feature support in EVO, but even then the BIOS devices are only required by certain systems. I'm still green on the software lists myself, and just now venturing into that realm. All you need to provide GameEx with is the files with fields in the Advance MAME section down towards the bottom. There have been some setup wizard changes since I last looked at this myself, but I wouldn't imagine it's changed that drastically if at all here.

The "U" releases went away several years ago with the monthly (last Wednesday of each) release schedule was implemented. I rarely bothered with them either. Touchscreen support works well on some devices but causes strange anomalies on others. There's really no definitive answer as to why but to answer the question, yes it has been known to cause issues for some.

What's the determining factor for "major"? I usually settle on a set for a good bit for my rig, but keep a perpetual set separately If you use the "Extras" built by community regulars, then the assets are close enough to work as long as you are one or two releases within the current. 0.199 will be out Wednesday BTW

You may want to try putting the CHD's in a tempory folder to keep them out of the equation. At least this way you're tackling one thing at a time. I know it's tempting to go all out and throw the works at it, but when things aren't going according to plans it's best to take incremental steps so you can see where it's getting wrenched.

I can't say that I've ever known anyone to try using a microSD card, but I also don't know any reason it wouldn't work. The fact that some are showing indicates it will indeed work. Can you launch these outside of GameEx? One thing you could try is in the Advance Mame Settings, "Don't filter these ROMS" and see if what you put in there shows after an update. Obviously, it would be cumbersome to rely on that entirely, but it may offer some insight should it not work.

Do you have slik stik/ipac support enabled in the input settings of setup wizard? Posting your ini and log would be helpful.

Turn off verify roms and update.

We met a local couple at an Irish bar while in Vegas a couple years ago near The House of Blues, in advance of a Billy Idol show no less. Fair enough. Having a zillion HD channels to memorize is a HUGE PITA, IMO. If I dare say something good about COMCRAP, it's that the X1 voice remote is great, a feather in the turds cap if you will. If this will pull that off on any cable box, that is pretty sweet! I wasn't really considering the points you mention as I'm comparing it to an AFTV Stick.
