why does Gameex restart my computer when i try to load a game?
nullPointer replied to scoobie_snack's topic in General
Hi scoobie_snack and welcome to the GameEx forums! That's certainly some unusual system behavior. When reporting GameEx issues we request that you post a copy of your GameEx log and your GameEx.ini. Here is a thread explaining how to do that. That will give our troubleshooting team a wealth of information to help you address your issue. Also could you explain a bit more about the circumstances leading up to the reboot? Thanks! -
Ooo ... Bringing in a scan line effect for these. Well done! (Bit partial to the blue one as the scan lines are a bit more subtle)

For some reason seeing that Model 2 logo always makes me start humming Jimmy Buffet songs ... yeah. And now I'm hungry for a cheeseburger ... in paradise. Be that as it may, great job KRC. Brilliant work as always!

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification Tom!

I hadn't realized it before reading this post, but it looks like the Roms in Folders option is no longer available in the Setup Wizard. As the poster in the linked thread points out, this setting appears in the Setup Wizard guide (you may need to Ctrl-F for the term 'folders') Setup Wizard - First Use The guide itself does appear to be a bit out of date though. Has the Roms in Folders option been intentionally removed from the Setup Wizard, or is this merely an oversight?

Naturally Tom has final jurisdiction in terms of licensing, but typically there are no issues with this sort of transference. So long as the other machine is owned by you and remains in your possession it should be fine. This question has come up a few times in the past:

Sorry rtkii, I didn't mean to come off as if I was interrogating you or anything. It was mostly the 320.128 designation that threw me off. We've got a forum rule regarding illegal MAME builds, so I figured I'd put that information out there for your perusal. TBH it's a bit of a grey area (I had to consult with another moderator for a refresh as to what we even consider as an illegal MAME build.) Bottom line: If it's working for you, I wouldn't sweat it too much. So here's another piece of advice for you to do with what you will. I'd consider looking into some ROM auditing software, so that you can be sure that your ROMs are a match for your MAME version. The two most popular choices are ClrMamePro and RomCenter. In my experience RomCenter is a bit more user friendly. If I were starting out today I'd probably use RomCenter ... but I'm an old dog and it's harder and harder to learn new tricks. I use CMP. I'll send you a PM with a bit more information regarding the above. Good call regarding iMagic. Adultery is very talented at what he does. CPWizard is also a very quality piece of software, although it does have a bit of a learning curve. The cool thing about CPWizard is that it will dynamically display the control scheme for whatever game you're currently playing in MAME (in other words you don't need to pre-configure a bunch of images).

Time. What is time? Like the sands in an hour glass? Inseparable from space? The fourth dimension? Look all I know is that it passes in one great flash. Which, oh hey - that reminds me it's the birthday of one of our finest elder statesman in the GameEx community. Happy Birthday, greatflash! It's time to celebrate that day of the year by which each of us marks our own individual passing of time here on this big blue marble. I hope you have the type of birthday befitting a king! Anyone masochistic enough to acquire a vast knowledge and proficiency in ASM code certainly deserves it! (For those not in the know ASM is assembly language. It's not quite like writing code in 1s and 0s, but it's not far from it either.) Have a great birthday greatflash; may you surf the tides of time in a never ending wave.

Very nice indeed! Logos like this would be a great drop-in for the default media center themes. Nicely done!
-
Great! I'm glad it's working for you now! Happy gaming.

There is indeed a way to accomplish what you describe. You'll want to apply an advanced emulator config. You can select an advanced emulator config on the Advanced Emulator Settings screen in the setup wizard. Each selection that appears in the dropdown maps back to a config file in the following directory: ... \GameEx\CONFIG\EMULATORS\ If you're already using an advanced emu config for bsnes, I'd make a copy of that file and rename the copy as something new (probably something specific to bsnes). Open up the setup wizard again and navigate to your bsnes settings. In the Advanced Emu Config dropdown you'll see a new entry for the copied config you created. Select that from the dropdown list and click the '...' button. Welcome to the Advanced Config Editor. You'll notice a tab called 'Process Wait'. Open that tab. You'll want to enter bsnes as Process1.**Note that the process may not be called 'bsnes'. You may need to open up Windows Task Manager while bsnes is running to determine the actual name of the process to enter as Process1. As usual fReq beat me to it.

Ah yes, sorry for misunderstanding the nature of your problem. I was aware that more recent versions of bsnes had issues with ROM path management. Bsnes v091 rom path problems I'm as big a bsnes fan as there is, but if I can be candid for a moment I think it's a bit of a baffling (and unfortunate) design decision on the part of byuu. You are correct that this feature is no longer appears in the setup wizard. This is something that may need to be brought to Tom's attention. The setting does still appear in the GameEx.ini though, so you may be able to make the adjustment manually in your GameEx.ini (back up the file before doing this!) I don't currently have an emulator setup for which this would apply, so I'm currently unable to test this out. I think it's certainly worth a shot at any rate.

Hi Deuce, and welcome to the GameEx forums! The field you are looking for is called Scan Sub Folders. It's located on the Advanced Emulator Setup screen in the Setup Wizard. I don't *think* that it's a registered feature.

That looks to be a non-standard version number for MameUI. My guess is that you picked up a pre-compiled version. This is an extremely mixed blessing. If your ROMs are working and high score support is coming up aces, then it looks like you're good to go. No need for any additional compiling. Now the downside (this is where I have to put on my stern moderator hat). We can only offer limited assistance for non-standard MAME builds. This is especially true of pre-compiled MAME builds. Part of this is so we don't run afoul of the express wishes of the MAME development team. The other part of this is that it's extremely difficult to effectively troubleshoot problems with non-standard MAME builds since the code has been altered from the original (meaning the compiled executable may behave in 'non-standard' fashion). Self compiled versions of MAME have some of the same issues, but at least there the user knows what patches were applied, and the what changes were made to the MAME source as a result. This is not the case with pre-compiled builds. Simply put, I urge extreme caution when using pre-compiled MAME builds. (Also it goes without saying, that we request that no one discuss how and where to obtain pre-compiled versions of MAME). Let us know how you're getting along, and we're absolutely here to help with any issues you may encounter.

Still loving these! They remind me a bit of gelatin molds (is Jello a thing in the UK?). I can almost see them jiggling away with a slight bounce animation (not a suggestion or request, just my imagination). ... And now I'm hungry for Jello. Any plans to release these as a set KRC?

I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that GameEx already has the ability to display high score information via an integrated utility called HiToText. This feature can be enabled on the MAME Settings screen under the Advance MAME Settings section via the 'Enable High Scores' field. I think that this feature contains all the functionality you describe in your questions ... when it's working correctly. Read on ... The bad news is that HiToText hasn't been updated in quite a while and is incompatible with more recent MAME versions. I'm not really sure of the last version of MAME to support HiToText, but if you're really interested in this feature, I suppose you could always revert back to an earlier version of MAME (remember that you'll have to revert all your ROMs and CHDs back as well). I'm hoping that Fyrecrypts jumps back in to the project at some point, because it's a really awesome utility. Alternately perhaps a motivated developer will take the reigns and and make the appropriate updates. The source is available via SourceForge,

Hi DoA, long time no see! I utilize save states through button mapping software. Specifically I setup Xpadder to kick off the proper sequence of buttons for saving and loading save states for those emulators that support save state functionality. For some emulators it can be a bit tricky as there can be some mouse emulation thrown into the mix as well (for instance Nestopia utilizes a standard Windows open/save file dialog window for save states). When necessary I also utilize a batch file that copies the name of the ROM to the clipboard upon loading the emulator so that I can execute a paste operation through Xpadder (if the name of the save state isn't pre-populated in the save dialog). Xpadder handles all of this like a champ (as usual). I'm afraid this solution doesn't meet your criteria of 'pre-loading' a save state, but I feel it's a pretty viable alternative. As fReq points out, there would need to be a command option to load the state via the given emulator command, and it's hit or miss as to whether any given emulator supports this. Even then you would have to name the state identically to the ROM or something so that you could pass the appropriate save state to the command line via GameEx (in order for it to know which state to load). fReq is right; there's no super-easy way of accomplishing this, but I fully endorse the Xpadder method (or mapping software of your choice). It takes a bit of little trial and error, but ultimately it's not terribly complex to configure through Xpadder.

We're starting to cross wires a bit here. If it looks like you're running into an issue between MAME and GameEx it might be best to start a new thread. (Don't worry, this isn't one of those, "You must start a new thread for every little thing" types of forums, but I'd imagine you'll get more eyes on your issue that way ). Also when reporting a problem in GameEx it's highly recommended that you post your GameEx.ini along with a copy of your GameEx log after having experienced the error. We may also ask for a copy of your runitgame.bat. Here's a dedicated thread explaining how to access all that information. This will give our troubleshooting team a wealth of information to work with in order to help you resolve your issue. Regarding MAME versions and playable ROMs: remember that the version of your ROM set must match your version of MAME. It's highly likely that ROMs which work in one version of MAME will not work in another version, particularly where we're talking about wildly disparate versions (MAME .103 is a very old version, although I know some users prefer older versions certain games). Don't worry we've all felt like we've bitten off more than we can chew from time to time. That's why we form support networks like this one!

This is purely a matter of personal preference. MameUI is simply a barebones frontend for MAME. So when you integrate MameUI into GameEx you’re operating one frontend (MameUI) from another frontend (GameEx). Personally I prefer do away with the middle man and use vanilla command line MAME (through GameEx). But that also means that if I use MAME directly (sans frontend) I do so directly through the command line. Many users find MameUI to be much more user friendly, and configurable. It should also be able to sort your games in a more intuitive fashion. Bottom line: it can’t hurt to try it out. You may find it to be just the ticket to make your MAME experience that much more enjoyable.

Wow! Leave it to our awesome forum members here to know considerably more about gaming lore than the cited source. Thanks for the share ClassicGMR! Some pretty remarkable history there, and an aspect of our hobby of which I was unaware. Ya learn something new every day!

Howdy rtkii, and welcome to the GameEx forums! I'll attempt to address some of your questions. A few of your questions have multiple solutions, but I’ll make suggestions as to how I myself might handle them. There are a couple of approaches here depending on whether you’re talking about MAME or standard emulators (I suspect you’re referring specifically to MAME). CPWizard is what GameEx uses natively to display controls for MAME games. CPWizard can be configured to display controls on a second monitor. You can access CPWizard from the start menu under GameEx (sorry I’m away from my emulation rig ATM – it might be under utilities). CPWizard is a fantastic tool, but there is a bit of a learning curve. Luckily the author Headkaze is a regular around these forums, and has made great contributions to the GameEx code base. Adultery’s Game Info Plugin is another fantastic tool that might interest you. This tool is a bit more tailored to ‘standard’ emulators in GameEx but also has functionality to display control panel info on a secondary screen (which is to say that I’ve never tried it in conjunction with MAME). It also has a bunch of other cool functionality that you may (or may not be interested in). All menus in GameEx are 100% configurable. Some items may require the use of Custom Menus though. Forum member DazzleHP has written a great tutorial for using custom menus. GameEx does indeed provide some custom list functionality, but you may need to expand a bit more on what specifically you’re looking to accomplish. Most of the current MAME categories are drawn from catver.ini, so it’s more of a MAME thing than a GameEx thing. In the MAME section of the Setup Wizard you will see several options to disable certain categories of games. If you want to get a bit more extreme, the following thread may be of some interest to you: Custom catver.ini You have to compile MAME in order to get high score support. No two ways around that one. Sorry. Having said that Headkazes MAME compiler is likely to be the least painful method of doing this (which is to say I consider it to be painless so long as you follow HKs instructions). It’s certainly worth a look if you’ve never checked it out. Mame Compiler 64 Good luck rtkii, and feel free to ask as many questions as you like.

Great job KRC! I’m really enjoying the big bold look of these chunky 3D logos.

So I’ve got the How-To Geek loaded up in my RSS reader, and I typically catch up on stories during my lunch break. A few times a week they run trivia questions, and often those questions are video game related. This is great because it tends to give me a nice mid-day ego boost, as I can prove (to no one in particular) my knowledge of trivial and pointless information. Yay me. Today's question threw me for a loop though, so I thought I’d share it with you guys as I found it rather fascinating. Which Game Console Was The First To Have Downloadable Content? Atari 2600Nintendo 64XboxPlayStationThink you know the answer? Hit up the spoiler to find out: Article

Thanks for the clarification Rick. You may want to go into the \gameex\data\ folder and delete all files that have cache in the file name or extension. These will rebuild on the next load of GameEx. On rare occations there can be issues with cached data that can be resolved in this fashion. After performing this step you'll likely want to load up one of the 'fresh' theme downloads. The above steps are worth a shot. You may also want to verify that your DirectX components are up to date, and likewise with your video card drivers. If the above steps don't work, please repost your GameEx log and gameex.ini, so we can be up to speed on the latest developments. Thanks Rick!

Hi repetto, You mention that a lot of your themes are behaving this way. Just to clear up any ambiguity, are there some themes that don't behave in this fashion? If so which ones? As Draco mentioned it might help to have a point of comparison.
