That's good to know about F.E.A,R. To be honest I think I based my opinion of the entire series on the previews and advertising I'd seen for F.E.A.R. 2, which as you point out seems a bit like Call of Duty meets Ghostbusters. You've definitely piqued my interest in the first game! It certainly sounds like something unique with a lot of atmosphere.

These are all awesome suggestions you guys! I had almost forgotten about the Amnesia games. I have the first game installed through Steam, but I haven't really played it yet. F.E.A.R. is another one that's been on my radar, but haven't played. How are the sequels to this game? Does it stand strong as a series or is the first game the standout title? Alan Wake is another game that looks very interesting! It seems to have a real Steven King sort of vibe to it. And of course Ghosts n' Goblins is another classic! After reviewing my Steam list, I remembered that I've also been saving The Walking Dead (the Telltale adventure game) for an appropriate time. Based on the accolades this game received last year I may start out with this one to see how it goes. Has anyone else here played through The Walking Dead?

[RESOLVED] Gameex and Mess Vectrex getting mad....
nullPointer replied to repetto74's topic in General
Hi repetto U-man is right that you'll need to setup an advanced config in GameEx to be able to properly exit ParaJVE (I believe this is true of most Java based emulators, since technically they all run through a virtual machine - the JVM). I imagine U-man will beat me to the punch, but I also have a working config for ParaJVE that I can post after work. Regarding your initial issue with MESS, it seems to me that the "[ROMPATH]\[ROMFILE]" portion of that command should include a file extension (otherwise you would just use "[ROM]"). Are you using a custom map file for Vectrex? Whichever route you choose, posting your emulator config will likely shed a bit more light as to what might be going wrong with either of these systems. -
Thanks for the update Adultery! Also thanks for the diligent testing Dazz!

[RESOLVED] Gameex and Mess Vectrex getting mad....

Yeah I was going to suggest this as well. ParaJVE is the bomb for Vectrex emulation. There's even a setting to emulate the characteristic "hum" of the Vectrex system! Definitely my favorite Vectrex emulator. Couldn't hurt to give it a shot! -
Oh good call! I always forget about Satan's Hollow. That's a game that's been on my "Must Play MAME Games List" for a while. I'll have to take it for spin this October. Shadow Over Mystara is such a great game! Actually this comment took me back to high school, when the other variety of D&D was a prime Winter pastime. I definitely have some good memories of epic campaigns taking place over the Autumn/Winter months. Not so much my thing these days, but talk about nostalgia! Also a good call regarding Pac-Man! The fact that one of the cornerstones of all gaming features ghostly protagonists really cements my theory that October is the perfect month for gaming (at least in my own twisted little mind ) Castlevania is one of my favorite series in general, but it's practically an essential pick for October gaming. You're absolutely correct that Castlevania (or Akumajō Dracula if you prefer) was ported as an arcade game called Haunted Castle I believe. Any hoo, Castlevania 2: Simons Quest is probably my favorite game in the older series (i.e. pre-Symphony of the Night). Come to think of it I haven't played Symphony of the Night in a long time either ... Edit: I modified the thread title so as to avoid any confusion between this thread and the GOTM Selection Thread for the month of October. Naturally whichever game is selected for the for the Hi-Score Competition Game of Month should be a shoe-in for everyone's October playlist!

Typically for me the month of October brings with it the lure of gaming. What I mean is that I've always lived in areas in which the Winter months "strongly encourage" one to keep one's ass indoors for long stretches of time. And October is typically the onset of colder weather in Montana (ususally starting with our current weather pattern of cold wind and rain). So what better time to get lost in gaming for a while? Having said that, I also feel that October is the month that may be most perfectly suited for gaming in terms of general atmosphere. I'm referring mostly to Halloween here, but what I mean is that the things we associate with October and Halloween are also generally closely associated with gaming. Zombies? Check. Ghosts? Check. Menacing Aliens? Check. And the list goes on. So ... I'm looking for good games to play during the month of October. I'm not looking for a particular genre or era so much as a great creepy/spooky/scary atmosphere. Past favorites of mine for this time of year include: Silent Hill 2Resident Evil 2SplatterhouseSo what do you guys suggest? Anyone else go in for creepy games at this time of year in keeping with the spirit of the season?

I just wanted to mention that the Kickstarter campaign for River City Ransom: Underground is pulling into its final week, and they're still looking to raise a decent chunk of change. If this is a project that interests you, it might be worthwhile to pitch in a couple bucks. I'm hoping this one sees the light of day. If you're looking for a bit of instant gratification in this game genre, Fist Puncher is 50% off on Steam this week. Personally I might still hold out for 75% off at some unforeseen point in the future (I'm sort of in the 75% off or bust crowd), but 5 bones ain't too bad for this quirky retro inspired beat-em-up.

Nice update jackhammersalm. Thanks for the shoutout! So I'm not sure if you're still looking for suggestions or not, but there's something else that's occurred to me. You mentioned in your most recent post that one of the things you fight is the burnout of maintaining a regularly updated blog. This is totally understandable. Currently each of your entries is in a "magazine style" format in which one blog post contains several articles. You even maintain regularly occurring columns and whatnot. It's a reasonable format, but for short-attention span(and time-starved) bastards like myself, it means that I'd probably read a single post in several shorter increments. So what if rather than taking the approach that each post is an entire issue of a magazine, you took an approach that each post is a single article within the magazine? Each recurring column could appear as single posts, and each individual post could focus exclusively on a single topic (a single game review, a cabinet building feature, a single community update, etc.). This would be great for attention span (and time) deprived persons like myself, but I also think it might help to avoid the burnout associated with trying to keep up with generating huge monolithic posts. You could certainly still feature a month-end "magazine-style" recap, but in it you could maybe write up a general month-end summary with links back to the individual articles appearing during that month. Just a friendly suggestion, and naturally you'll do what you feel is best for the blog.

[RESOLVED] Gameex and Mess Vectrex getting mad....

Hi Repetto74 So far everything seems configured pretty well actually. It would be helpful to take a look at the emulator config you're using for Vectrex, as well as your log after having attempted to run it. Troubleshooting via runitgame.bat should also work pretty well for MESS. What happens when you follow the steps listed in item 4.B from the Help Thread? Is there any error output to the console? One other shot in the dark - be sure that you have Zip/7-Zip/GoodMerge/RAR setting set to No. -
These are looking super sharp Draco! Great job!

This is just fantastic Adultery! Great planning, design and execution. Thanks so much for another great plugin and for all that you do for this community!
-
Looks awesome Adultery! One thing that might be cool is if the configuration app allowed you to enter a user name, which was then overlaid as part of the screen shot (like maybe in the corner or something) when you created the snap. Either way, chalk this one up as another one of your great ideas.

Glad to hear you got everything sorted out. Sounds like some good detective work on your part as well!

Hi Fulankito and Welcome to the GameEx forums! According the the Help information in the latest version of Raine (this one), both those commands should still be valid. Results of raine32 -h > help.txt Are you pretty confident that your ROM directories are configured correctly for this emulator? What does your log look like after running Raine through GameEx? Have you tried to troubleshoot using your runitgame.bat? Please see this thread for further details, but specifically follow the steps listed in section 4.B. Does this display any error messages? It might be helpful to post your log and your Emulator config for Raine.

Thanks for keeping those plugins fresh and tasty Adultery! Thanks for diligent bug testing Stu!

That controller would definitely be cool for some applications. If Steam is able to reliably achieve their stated goal that the controller, "magically recognizes and maps legacy keyboard and mouse games" (paraphrased), then that would be absolutely epic. OTOH I can definitely see some nitpicks with the control layout. I think having A/B and X/Y buttons on opposite sides of the controller would take some getting used to. The tactile trackpads would work absolutely great for some things First person shooters would probably work a treat (strafe and move maneuvers would be butter smooth), and I would imagine this style of controls would have an awesome feel for driving games (and that's understating it IMO). Conversely though anything requiring fine or precise control/button combinations could turn into a bit of a nightmare. I'm thinking of fighting games and certain shmups here. Attempting Street Fighter moves with twin trackpads? Ugh ... no thanks. All of that aside, my curiosity is certainly piqued.

Amen to avoiding Unity when and if possible! That was probably the driving decision in my conversion to Mint as my distro of choice. I've still got love for most of what Ubuntu has done, but Unity ... eh, not so much. But all of this really starts driving at the question of, what will the 'openness' of the Steam platform look like? Linux is by it's nature a very open platform. Will SteamOS let you take control of your own package management and installation? Or will they close that portion of the system and drive the process through some sort of Marketplace vis-a-vis Android? Will we start hearing about people rooting their Steam Machines? (answer: Yes) So many questions! It will be extremely interesting to see how this all pans out.

Daaayuuum Krak! Pretty nice rig ya got there! Glad to see you around, and congratulations on your new machine.

His GameEx.ini is in the first post (but naturally may not be reflective of up to the minute changes). Having said that, what happens if you set GameEx to run in a Window? In the Setup Wizard on the Display Settings screen, try changing the Window/Full Screen setting to Windowed. This isn't to suggest a permanent fix, but it may help to determine a root cause of the issue. I also see that you're using the Default - Dark Gloss theme. Does this problem occur regardless of theme selection? What happens if you select Default - Media Center (for instance)?
-
I was thinking the same thing! The only potential hold-up is that some of the folks in the GameEx Group haven't logged into Steam for quite a while. If anyone in the GameEx Steam Group is reading this, check your Steam friend requests! I'd be on the moon if someone within the GameEx community was lucky enough to be selected for Steam hardware beta testing.

The sweet sounds of an update! Thanks Adultery!
-
Ah yes, turns out that was a reading comprehension fail on my part! Scott, here's the post Adultery is referring to that actually put the user in question back on the right track.

So I have a couple suggestions for you in order of precedence. First and foremost I notice that you have MAME set up both as a regular emulator and through the MAME specific settings. Unless you have a pretty specific reason for doing so, you'll typically want to avoid that sort of setup. Ideally you just want to use MAME through the MAME specific features of GameEx. Having said that, it would be helpful to know which of the MAME setups are giving you problems (or both). As Draco pointed out posting the results of your runitgame.bat would be helpful for troubleshooting. If this seems to be happening with both configurations of MAME, I would recommend taking a look at the details of this thread. Adultery solved a problem for a user experiencing a similar issue. Turns out the fix was to add a -video d3d to their command line in MAME,Let us know how this is going for you!
