  1. Some people prefer ddraw. I use D3D personally. I think the main difference is the available video filters.
  2. Just got web access again. WOW, real time filtering would be awesome! Nice work Tom.
  3. ...unless you enjoy editing ini files by hand.
  4. You can create a custom list in MAME32 format. Just name each list appropriately. I don't think there is a way to filter on version directly in GameEx, but I could be wrong.

    clones

So you are making a feature request to have MAME titles show up with a GoodMerged type look, correct? With GoodMerged sets, GameEx displays the parent name in the list and lists all games within the archive once you open the title. I think that would be a really nice way to have access to all games yet keep the main list simple and usable. Of course, I don't know how hard this would be to implement. Also, you then have to know which game is the "best" version that most people would want to run. That might be the biggest issue unless MAME has that info already.
  6. Post a log of the failure.
  7. Exactly. Those options can be set on the command line, so they can be added to a vertical.ini (alternately named mame.ini) and MAME will take care of the orientation itself.
  8. Tempest did add some capabilities to do certain things beyond just controls, but I don't know if it deals with resolutions. What I would suggest is looking into a different mame.ini for vertical games. I haven't read up on it in a while, but I believe if you simply copy your mame.ini to vertical.ini it will override all games that are listed as vertical in MAME. At that point, you just need to change the settings in that file to rotate the screen as needed.

    Zinc Problems

By default, GameEx uses the MAME roms for the Zinc games. I believe you can override the location of the roms by putting the path in the config file for Zinc. I do recall there being some issues with using the built in Zinc stuff which is why I opted to write my own loader. I later switched to using the mameemumap.ini file to include zinc files as this is a better overall solution. That is the method I would recommend, but you might be able to get it working like I said above.

    Zinc Problems

You are correct! There are a couple ways around this. You can put the Zinc roms back into their own folder and replace the MAME 0.137 roms. This may be a problem if you don't have a backup of the MAME roms. If it were me, I'd do this since an update to your MAME set will overwrite your Zinc roms rendering Zinc broken. The other choice is to simply put the Zinc roms in the do not filter list. This will make them show up even if they are not valid for MAME (which they probably won't be).
  11. InstantSheller has worked flawlessly for me on both XP SP2 based cabs. You might want to make sure you don't have any problems with drivers or "load on startup" programs. I don't know why it would load that folder, but it's possible for some programs to steal focus from GameEx and keep it from being on top.
  12. Ahhh, ok. Some people obtain a rom at a time off the internet and throw them in the rom folder thinking they will just work. We don't ask how you get your roms, so I wasn't sure if that's what was going on or not. Anyway, Tempest's suggestion is the next thing that you should try. If that doesn't do it, play with other filters and see if anything in there helps. If the roms are there and they work in your MAME build, then it must be a filter thing.
  13. I think the default is "INI" as in a folder called INI under the MAME root directory. I don't know what all ini files it will read from that directory, but you can certainly add other locations if you want to complicate things! There are uses that make it good, like if you have different romsets that you want to access from a single version of MAME. You could split your Model2 roms off of your main MAME roms and point MAME to both (for whatever reason) and it would work fine.
  14. The main reason this typically happens is when you have a different version of MAME as your roms. MAME roms don't often change, but when they do, the verify roms option will make them disappear from the list. This is by design as those old roms don't officially work with your build. The best practice is to keep your roms and mame version in line. You can use Clear MAME Pro (CMP) to build a romset for whatever version of MAME you want to run for going forward.
  15. Both locations for the mame.ini file are valid. If you have more than one copy in those locations, one will override the other. From the sounds of it, the INI folder overrides the root. Just be careful about where you keep files (and best to only have one copy).
  16. Sounds like you need to tell GameEx what process to watch for that emulator.

    Error report

I've seen that before with programs other than GameEx. It's strange! Anyway, if you grab the Windows bar and drag it to the side of the screen, then the bottom, it should put it back. You need to turn off "Lock the taskbar" first of course.
  18. Maybe your CatVer.ini isn't being picked up? That might explain the adult stuff. I'm not sure about the clone stuff though.
  19. The fix to nestopia only applies if a user chooses to start from scratch with NES emulation. If you are a current user and are not changing anything, you are not affected.
  20. They missed a few games where Mario was a crucial component, but the ones they included were the most popular. Mario is the only plumber I've never been disappointed with!
  21. If you run a bad rom, MAME should give a warning and then kick back to the FE. I don't know what happens in HS since I've never run it, but it works fine in GameEx. You will basically see a flash of black when it tries to run the game and then the FE will pop back up.
  22. No, you don't have to reinstall GameEx. There are 2 setup applications (setup wizard and config utility) that allow you to set up all the features. You can have these launch from GameEx if you so choose, but it can also be launched from Windows. Either way, once the changes are made and you restart GameEx, you simply update your game list and you should be set.
  23. You need to adjust the filters in the GameEx setup. By default, Tom (the author) has the list set up how most people seem to want things (no clones, only games that MAME says are valid, only games that MAME lists as working, etc). In addition to these options, there are some overrides which allow the user to force certain games to display or not display (filter and do not filter lists). If you want all of your games to show up, you need to open up all the filters and make sure you don't have anything in the filter list. Oh, and welcome to the forum!
  24. Actually, if you could just scale the value based on whatever input you were using, that would be pretty sweet! I hadn't considered that since I wasn't sure if things were linear like that...or perhaps have some offset of some kind. But, if you do see a trend where that would work, I think that would be a really great addition to the community!
  25. I'm sure you are aware since you followed the thread at BYOAC, but that site won't give a complete input into CFG Magician. Also, for the same reason, I don't think you should include Thumb's settings into the main CFG Magician pack of cfg files. Here's the problem. Everyone uses different hardware. If everyone's hardware had the same "gear count" (number of divisions per turn), then a universal setting could be used. BUT, since some people have high resolution spinners (like the new ones from GGG and Ultimarc) and others are using low resolution original arcade spinners, this is just not possible. I'm really not the best one to talk on the technical side here. If you want a real answer, read the thread and focus on u_rebelscum's details. He's the man when it comes to analog inputs!
