Hi all,

I know a lot of the youth today have these not thought out anti-capitalist ideas about things. If your one of them dont answer this!

But, is registered version of GameEx a good deal, and good value?

Just like some feedback please folks..

I think the registered version is a good value. The fee is relatively low, the license is valid forever (unlike most software where going from 1.x to 2.x requires a new purchase) and GameEx is practically the only product of it's kind.

Well, in fact, I don't like the idea of a version which you have to buy for some features.

BUT!

1. The free version is nearly as good as the one you can purchase. So when you purchase, it's like you support the development of GameEx. (which is the same like a donation, but you get a little for it)

2. There were some spontaneous contest threads to win a free licenes which is a really good idea and a lot of people get the chance of winning a license. Even if they don't really have the money to support the project.

So everyone get's a chance. Maybe the idea of a Theme contest would be grat, a plugin contest or a artwork and concept contest would be great. The winner which havn't already got a license get one, if the person have a license, the second rank earns it and so on.

This had 2 effects:

More people have the chance to get a license, and it would support GameEx with nice new themes, funcions, plugns, ideas (in conccepts) and so on.

So in this case, when the donations really support the project and if there will be such contests to support it with new content, it is a good deal.

You help the project and get something for it. But most updates should still be for the free users of course (like it already is ;) )

After playing with the sofware and finding out what it could do, it was an easy decision.

Best dam money I have spent on the internet for ages. Great deal, and great software!

sadly there have been in the past and afcouse here and there some pops up with one thing in thier mind "Making Money" as bleem, CDIemu ect. ect.

but when a product appears as this where the Author is really dedicated to his work listen to his users and helps when it takes alot of private time what i

respect i dont see any problem takin a small fee for your work when a person is dedicated and friendly/helpfull

i doubt there will be many against there are alittle fee its still a damn good product even if a person decides not to pay :)

Anyone who spends time with the software and our community will quickly see that "extra features" isn't necessarily what you are registering for. I am not sure I use any of the extra features--I don't even know what they are. The value for me was knowing that I was keeping features coming and keeping Tom financially able to keep working on it.

If you can afford a computer, you can afford $20 or so to register.

So my bottom line is: I didn't register for features, I registered out of respect.

That probably doesn't even answer your question, but that's my answer :)

I don't know about the value/money aspect, but like people have said, the suggested donation is insignificant for anyone in the working world. I just wanted to point out a way to satisfy both sides though. I was thinking that for people who make contibutions to the GameEx community (through themes, plugins, significant help on the message board, etc.) perhaps licenses could be given out. I also like the contests as they bring in new people and give them the chance to get involved.

Just my thoughts...

You get what you pay for out there. I've never seen a program that does what GameEx does and after using this for two weeks and seeing what it can do I decided it was worth the donation. I'm sure others will too!

For about $25 USD you get a program that keeps giving back with new versions coming out all the time... Not to mention the best support I have ever seen for any piece of software! I could have bought a pizza for that - and it would have been gone in 15 minutes. :)

This is the best 25 dollars I've spent in a long time.

I love the software and the forum.

Please dont take these kiddies wanting to hack your software as a slap in the face.

The same people that hack your software are the same LEECHERS that aren't likley going to contribute

to the forum or in general.

It seems this has been happening alot lately.

Dont get discouraged Tom. You have a wonderful peice of software and a great board with many

helpful people. That shows alot

Keep up the good work! :)

tom i told you from day one you can get more money than you're asking. along with what adultery was saying, name any other program with a forum like this, and none the less one you can get in contact with and receive thorough information from it's creator. if you cheap-o's are worried about the small donation to support the front end, i hope you're friends are impressed with the nag screen.

To be honest, i'm very surprised you're asking this question. This piece of software is of commercial quality (and better than most). I'm new to the emulation scene and remember a mate giving me some floppies with MAME on them in the late nineties (never bothered to get it working and there weren't many games), both of us playing in the arcades in my home town for years particularly on sundays when we were supposed to be at mass (you can guess where the collection money went) but then consoles like the snes/megadrive came along and people spent less time in the arcades. But even then it (with the consoles) wasn't quite the same. Fast forward to 2005 - i was fed up with the hi-tech consoles - wanted to play some classics but all that was in the arcades were gambling machines (discovered this while trying to buy a cabinet) so i googled for MAME and the search results were mindblowing - i could not believe MAME had come this far. Liked the gear from Ultimarc and ordered, next stop was a frontend for MAME - found GameEX. After reading the specs i downloaded and donated (i couldn't tell you what the nag version is like) and haven't looked back. What appealed to me about it was the wealth of features. For an arcade cabinet i would need it for MAME / Emulators / Jukebox which is probably what a few frontends offer but the whole HTPC features really appealed to me because in another room with a tv i would like an all-in-one solution for entertainment (don't even need mediacenter) not just gaming. As far as i'm concerned this is the Holy Grail and would gladly donate twice a year. You've got the community to help you when your a little stuck and the author to fix bugs and add enhancements on a sometimes daily basis. It's beyond me why some people are unwilling to donate such a small fee and try to hack.

You already won a free licence bkenobi! And perhaps it was something to do with your contribution to the board? (I have a sneeky suspicion it did) ;)

A ) You provide a feature request forum

B ) You complete people's wants

C ) You do not require people to pay for using a functional product

People who feel they deserve all your labor for free should not have the privilege of life.

I work for a company that specially designs custom software, however we charge $80/hour for edits such as what you provide for free.

F*&$ them and keep charging your nominal registration fee. Seriously man, it's nothing. I'm sure they've spent more than $20 in quarters at arcade machines, and I'm sure they're getting a great 'deal' on roms and your front-end; funny how they feel they are being taken advantage of for $20...quite the contrary

Well I felt it was worth $25 or what ever I paid just to get rid of that nag screen so I could finally get things setup quicker...course most people aren't trying to learn the in's and outs of a frontend while setting up 30+ emu's.

While things have gotten smoother since I started...I still think making the donation up front is worth while and a wise choice.

To me the extra features offered by making a donation are nice, but they are not the clincher...mainly its the satisfaction of knowing that by making the donation I'm assuring that updates will come frequently for myself and others.

I'm with nologic in the respect that I registered mainly to get rid of the nag screen. I think Gameex has been worth every penny and have also donated again since my initial registration. At first I was not too sure I liked the media center look of GameEx so I tried other frontends. The only other frontend I had success with was Game Launcher using a little tool called TS Game Launcher Tools, but I still was not completely happy with Game Launcher as it didn't do everything I wanted it to do, so I took another look at GameEx (the other frontend that actually worked when I configured it). It was then that I put 2 and 2 together and realized that the cat that wrote TS Game Launcher Tools also wrote GameEx, our very own Mr Tom Speirs. The notion that someone could make a frontend easy to figure out and configure was what sealed the deal for me. I've enjoyed every configuring minute of GameEx since registration.

I initially registered to get rid of the nag screen, but like I said at the time, it's the only occasion that I've ever donated to shareware. I tried other frontends (still do occasionally) but never managed to get them to work properly: GameEx worked for me from the off, and I was so impressed I donated. I don't really notice the extra features, all I really wanted to do was play Black Tiger!

I don't see how people can complain about having to make the donation to get rid of the nag screen: don't pay, launch GameEx, wait for a minute. Whats the problem? You are still getting more or less full usage of the best frontend I've used, and the best support forum I've seen (try asking for help at the Daphne forums  ).

Like a wiser man than me said above, GameEx costs less than a pizza and will last an awful lot longer, so divvy up and show your appreciation!

I think the fact that you even asked the question in the first place shows that you care about your user base, which in invaluable!

The donation is a small price to pay for commercial grade software with the kind of support and number of updates that GameEx has.

I have just began to M.A.M.E my Virtua Fighter cab and build the PC to go into it. After tinkering with GameEx on my main machine I really cant wait to get into the cab. I think having an easy to use and configure front end that does everyting that GameEx can do will be the finshing touch that actually defines how well the cabinet works as a whole.

Knowing that my donation will (when I donate) help to keep the software that I love going adds that little extra satisfaction to the project.

Downloaded the free version, registered about two hours afterwards !!!!

This is a great piece of software and the donation was a no-brainer for me

Good up the good work

Hi Tom,

I made the payment this morning, but I don't know myself if I should call it a Registration or a Donation...

- Registration: To get rid of the nag screen and to get the additionnal features of course, but especially because Gameex rocks and you deserve to get paid, I was looking for a software which could be integrated to MCE so I could play my favorites games and emulators. At first, I was indeed confused by all the configuration screens, but once I launched it, it was for good. The interface is really cool and can be used with a joypad/stick very easily. The videos and images players are great features too, I don't need to go back to MCE (especially because I hated the thumbnail view in MCE for my videos)...

- Donation: Why not, if it allows you to continue the "already" great job you did, and because Gameex rocks... and because I think that it still misses some features, like a music player so I could get rid of MCE for good, etc...

Thanks,

Radju

P.S.: It is the first time that I pay for a shareware and I feel good about it, because the author really deserves it... ;)

Soon after downloading the Unregistered version and getting it up and running, i was completely in awe of its functionality and wanted to register purely out of full respect for what i believe is truly great software. Knowing that i will be receiving regular updates is just the icing on the cake, and what can i say about those who tirelessly help out on the forums (respect to you all as too many to mention) this all adds up to a package i for one would gratefully pay twice for, i too check and spend a large amount of time reading through the forums and the website checking for updates and to see who is playing what game, its a fantastic community and Gameex is huge value for money in my humble opinion even though i dont use most of the extra functions.

Next step.....Constructing my first Cab!

Thanks again Tom i think you have no worries!!! :D
