[RESOLVED] Pinball X opening to black screen

Ok, so if I am reading correctly, the black screen issue is resolved with the 1050, only issues now is long load times, and some tables crashing, right?

Think he still has the black screen in PinballX issue with just the 1050 (but no black screen in Windows)

The log file is showing the same old loop

...

18:24:34.99  10/1/2024:  Main display running full screen windowed.
18:24:35.21  10/1/2024:  Created DirectX BackGlass Window
18:24:35.48  10/1/2024:  Main display running full screen windowed.
18:24:35.71  10/1/2024:  Created DirectX BackGlass Window

... and then finishes with an error.

Not sure how old your PinballX install was before the upgrade so please try with the legacy .net 4 version of the latest PinballX instead (doesn't use .net core)

As https://forums.gameex.com/forums/topic/28684-news-pinballx-590/

"To force the .net 4 install on 64 bit Windows 7 or newer set the compatibility to Windows XP or Vista."

(i.e. change the compatibility mode of the installer exe before running it)

Scutters is correct. Both screens work in windows, Pinball x has the same issue.

I tried running .net 4.0, but I already have .net 4.8, so it was rejected because I have a higher version. I believe I also have 6.029 installed.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling 6.03. (I saved and replaced my config, Media, and Database folders after the install).

Clearly I also have vp issues as well because some tables I used to run crash now. I'll revert my vp version tonight.

I meant install the PinballX .net framework version (not the actual .net 4 runtime).

The PinballX installer includes .net core and .net framework versions, the default install is .net core but if you change the compatibility mode of the PinballX installer it can install the framework version of PinballX instead (which has the same version number and updates as the core version). The PinballX log file will indicate on the first line which flavour is installed.

Just some extra things I noticed and give it a try as well

  • Try running PBX as a normal user, instead of Administrater
  • Try to disable the use of B2s in the settings
  • Try to not use exclusive full screen mode

The first one isn't necessary anymore, and the other 2 are just for testing. Maybe the b2s server has issues beung displayed

  • Try running PBX as a normal user, instead of Administrater   ** Did not make a difference.
  • Try to disable the use of B2s in the settings                       ** Did not make a difference.
  • Try to not use exclusive full screen mode                                ** Did not make a difference.

No changes of any kind trying these. I even reverted to 2.60 for the hell of it and got the same thing.

You may want to look at the log file and compare the date/time stamp for any errors in the Windows Event Viewer. Something in your environment is definitely hinked up, but if it were PinballX proper, there should have been some improvement at least with one of the suggested changes.

What's really getting me is I can't get any different behavior from it no matter what I do.

Upgraded version.

Downgraded version.

Uninstall/reinstall.

Replaced .dll files from my desktop Pinball X install (this desktop used to be my cab 10 years ago, running pinball x 6.05).

Reformatted to windows 10 with a clean install of windows, graphics driver, and pinball x. (Not using that SSD right now). (WTF?)

Running Direct x 11, .net 6.029.

Nothing in the event viewer shows any correlation to what's going on.

Right now everything else on the cab is running fine with the 1050, with no errors. (Outside of a vp crash which I think is Vpinmame.dll related, but has nothing to do with Pinball X. I got no more ideas...

If you are having vpinmame issues as well that could be related as you are using vpinmame in PinballX.

Also try changing the  'Use Pinmame in front end' setting to No in Display Settings.

Then attach the new log and ini files.

(not sure if you tried the installing the current framework version of PinballX or not, but you did try v2.06 which was probably framework only at that time so probably achieved the same thing anyway [and didn't work :(])

Edit - there was one actual error in one of the log files posted previously;

HRESULT: [0x8876086C], Module: [Unknown], ApiCode: [Unknown/Unknown], Message: Unknown

Which hints at a direct x problem so please also run dxdiag and check for any problems reported on any of the tabs. It'd be a bit strange if you have the same directx problem on both a win7 and a win10 install.. but worth a check.

More info from the thread on vpf (https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=54204&p=540217) the vpinmame error code is "c0000005" which is a memory access violation.

@Itchigo Not sure if that error is on the win7 or win10 (or both?), or if vpinmame is the only app affected. It does hint at deeper trouble which could be software or hardware related. Lots of suggestions in google to try but i'd start with a system file check (sfc /scannow see Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files - Microsoft Support) and a memory diagnostic check (Diagnose memory problems on your PC (microsoft.com)) as well as running dxdiag.

Does that problem relate to the PinballX issue, or even the DP problem?... sorry no idea

I don't know if this means anything or not but when I open Pinball X the screen "dims" somewhat. Like I turned the brightness down halfway. When I exit it comes right back up. I can also see this change in the cursor brightness.

VPM Crash.txt

Also note that:

I had a previous error with b2s that said do not run the exe as admin- this was when running a 2 screen table. Not that I had a real old version before, but I got the latest VPM and B2s from Github. That fixed the b2s error. A lot of VPM games run, but some give me this error (VPM crash.txt). I do have sometimes that the backglass doesn't close with the table and stays on after the table is closed.

I also noticed that when I run a table, the screen blinks when the table first comes on. Not sure if it's related or it just hasn't finished rendering. I have no ball stutter issues. EM's don't seem to have any problems.

Between that and my work computer... Brand new windows 11 computer, and this 2011 desktop is faster. Can't even remember which network to connect to. I had a help desk ticket almost every day this week. Plus one of my cranes went down, it's been a fun one. :)

Thanks again. For anyone reading I reset the video card to defaults in the Nvidia control panel, and that fixed the black screen. Note, the displayport was a separate Nvidia issue and is not fixed. I'm returning the card. But my 1050 is no longer having stutter or graphics tearing, so there's no need to upgrade. That's why I bought the 3060 in the first place.

Weird that it was causing vp crashes though. That's fixed too.

Thanks for reporting back with your solution! Many don't and leave us hanging which is frustrating for us and unhelpful to others that may encounter similar issues in the future.

Thanks, that's exactly why I did it.

It seems I didn't get a far as I thought... I have Pinball X working as it should, but I get a black playfield when I try to take a screengrab. The backglass screengrab comes out ok though. The black playfield screengrab was an issue before all of this mess, fyi.

One step forward and two steps back lol. The backglass works in plain vp, but stopped working in Pinball X. I may have a setting off.

I have long loading times to start a table. For instance when I select the Hellboy table it takes 45.89 seconds for the table to appear. The table appears without a backglass (bg works in just vp alone), and I think I may have broken Flex DMD. No errors, but no flex DMD either.

Are the loading times dependent on the graphics card or the processor?

Do you run vpx in full screen exclusive mode ?

If so, try to set the fullscreen exclusive hack to be enabled in pinballx

So issue is resolved after all?

That issue is resolved.

I do have another Pinball X issues but it's a separate issue. Should I start a new topic for it? Has to do with taking black screengrabs.
