I just tried out 8.43. I'm still getting choppy animations. However, the ambient track does stop when the jukebox is played. However, this then becomes the 'ambient' track when exiting games or viewing pictures. (I initially thought the idea of the ambient track was to be during menu roaming and picture watching, being silent during other media/games, and then returning when one returns to the former. That is what is intuitive to me, and it's also my preference.)

I already have VP beta8 - and this version solves several problems over the last version, particularly one I suffered that has to do with ATI cards. Are familiar with this/will this make a difference?

Hmmm. I'm getting some Windows error with that wordpad doc. Won't load it. Tried a fresh d/l and extract. Still bad. This is entertaining.

But someone has done it. It's cute now and then, for a little while. I get real tired of it. I look at it like I look at my body. Exercise and certain diet (and the latter is different for different people) is like knowing how to plug components together and powering them up. I'm interested in bio-chemistry, but I'm not interested in HAVING to know it for my body to work.

Hm. I did a fresh install. Left the theme at default and didn't change the default settings for menu transitions, etc. I get choppy menu transitions. The ambience still continues on while playing audio tracks - although when paused, they both actually pause rather than just quiet down and continue to play in the background, so that's a step forward. And in the configuration wizard (using the utility is actually more hassle than the wizard), there is still the 'settings for what your hardware is closest to'.

You're very gracious, man. I thought you might've done that for that reason. I told ya not to worry, though. I'm waiting for Tom to arrange it so VP and Daphne will work from setting one path each. If he never does, I guess I'll be waiting forever. No worries. Yeah, I updated the list three or four times. Nothing. Could be my computer, as recently I upgraded to XP Pro and it's been slow and weird ever since. It's strange, cos I have an old PIII that runs faster with Pro. Whatever, I'm going to wipe this one and re-install Home.

MESS is based off of Mame. (I use the '32'-like version; same gui as Mame32. Note: I tend to use '32' versions of things, and don't use other arcade game emus.) MOST of the systems I don't care, nor even know, about; I didn't get into home computers, etc. And I generally can do without consoles when compared to arcade games. But, Vectrex and Odyssey2 have certain novelty for me, and are well supported in MESS. This is a total side question, though. I'm far more interested in getting VP and Daphne - in that order - eventually {easily} running.

Owe? I think nobody owes anybody anything, regardless of circumstance...but that's not a topic for this forum. I just meant that there are people who engineer things and I'm not one of 'em. On that second part, we already talked about that. On the bezel part, I'm not saying it's a GE error; particularly in light of the troubleshooting I did do, I can't see how it's a Mame issue, especially as it's not a Mame file. Doesn't matter. I went an tried what you said (with 8.27) on my 'work' computer. I can't even get the Mame list to show games. No idea. It would go without saying that VP doesn't work, either. Ah well.

Brian: going by the picture, I think you put them a little close together. You have room, particularly to the right of P2, to spread them apart.

I notice the various console systems (atari, as well as odyssey) supported don't all use MESS. What I'm asking is, why isn't there a 'MESS' selection? I ask because O2EM doesn't support controls changing, as well as GE not at all supporting Vectrex, which MESS does very well.

Brian: dude, be firm. I won't wilt. I don't know why I'm having a hard time with some of these things, either. On your mentioned settings, I tend to stay away from that stuff. That's what we pay people like Tom for - in this case, if we've registered - to have it set up. I'm not having any trouble with snaps or overlays (and I shouldn't, cos these are Mame things....if they work in Mame, GameEx - or any fe - shouldn't interfere, and hasn't in my experience), but the bezel that comes stock with GE isn't showing, and I don't know how that would be a Mame issue. Dunno. Oh, also, half the time I'm using native resolutions, which uses ddraw. bk: yeah, there are all kinds of new stuff for the recent versions of Mame. Except for the new DK, which is neat color-wise but I'm not hot on audio-wise (it's been redone and integrated into the core), I'm happy sticking with .104.

It doesn't matter what version I use, between mame32 .104 or .116 or mame .114. It's not a big deal. I just thought it might be neat.

I wondered how Tom got those game videos when scrolling through games in the list.

This has always been the case in any 'other emulators' I've set up. It's cos there's no game list parametre - it just shows the contents of the rom path folder. (There's no exe path, either, so I can't get any other versions of Mame to run in this category.) A way around this is to have more specific paths, such as are in Mame. Obviously Tom had reasons for setting it up the way he did. Having no idea about batch files and all that, I have no idea why.

Mmm, I hadn't thought of that. 'enforce aspect ratio' is default in Mame, and I keep it. (Some people like to fill a horizontal screen with vertical games - for example, ms pac - but I think it looks ghastly.) But I set the aspect back to the default 4/3 and still no bezel. I dunno.

Borders. (I stretch games, but the most I go is 8/7, which still has borders.) No logo. GE config is set for 'use bezel'. Bezel is in the media (or some such) folder. It should show, yes?

Well, since there's no tutorial on setting VP, I'm assuming that two paths set will run it. If not, I'll wait till that's what happens. Same for Daphne. On the other hand, if VP on mine isn't running properly, maybe it'll get reported.

No - I'm...just not writing it correctly. I meant the auto-reporting. Where's that at in the config utility?

I don't know what command.dat is for. And on bezels, I have 'use bezel' selected in GE and it's not showing, even with .23

Thank you for the offer, but I'll just wait for it to be easily available. I wasn't patient before and I got all wound up. I'm more interested in being patient. I'm curious, though, in what config category is this parametre selectable?

Yeah, I'm aware of that. What I've been doing, for security's sake, is copying and pasting the config, data, themes, and...one other I think. Just wondered what others may be doing.

What files are needed to transfer/copy to retain the status of your configuration?

On MamePlus!: yeah, some of those things are neat. I've messed around a little with it, but I'm not sure many of the features I'd use. Some of them I don't even know what they do. When using something like GameEx, all the GUI stuff is irrelevant. On inclusions of some Advancemame features: the most interesting difference to me between this an any other regular Mame (and I think all other variants of Mame follow this trend) is how Advancemame handles native resolutions differently. It also has some more features in that vein.

But you need a controls ini in your mame directory, right?

Though I've read about it, and I just tried it, I've never seen this 'L' thing. I assume you need some controls file in the folder, hm?
