Instant Sheller is an application that Tom wrote to set up your computer to boot straight to your FE. It can do a bunch of things if you tell it to such as hide the mouse, set the background as black, automatically log in a certain user, etc. I recommend you check it out: http://www.gameex.net/Community/InstantShe...73/Default.aspx Then, I also recommend you use a startup script to run anything you need started at boot rather than putting those items in the startup folder. You can use any scripting language you want (batch, AutoIt, AutoHotKey, WHS, etc) as long as Windows recognizes it. I personally recommend AHK since it only takes a couple lines to do what you want. http://www.autohotkey.com/ The script needs to launch the application, wait for it to be started, make sure GameEx is running, then tell the computer to maximize GameEx. It will look something like: Run, C:\Program Files\WLAN Driver Dir\WLAN Driver.exe WinWait, WLAN Driver WinWait, GameEx WinMaximize, GameExGet this script working before you try to incorporate it though! You then need to tell Windows to run this script at startup. 1) Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc 2) Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Script (Logon/Logoff) 3) Double click Logon 4) Click 'Add...', navigate to your script, click 'OK' 5) Click 'OK', close Group Policies. DONE!!!

Many times! I think this is something Tom mentioned working on for the next version of themes. However, I don't know how active that development is.

There are other ways to start up your system that wouldn't cause this problem. One option is to use Instant Sheller to launch directly into GameEx. You could then use a startup script to launch the WLAN drivers and have it maximize GameEx once it's started. Anyway, there are a few things that could be done if you wanted to fix the driver problem instead.
-
Just curious why you wouldn't just start up the WLAN card at startup? Sounds like if you were to do that, you would avoid the problem/bug...

Did you update your list after setting up paths and filters?
-
Perhaps you could provide the log file and your gameex.ini file so we could take a look. Without those files, there's not much that can be done.

That is a generic statement that doesn't really mean one thing or another. I don't think one person having that error relating to DX means they are all related to the DX install. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Doh! You want me to give it a try now or wait till your next release?
-
Bah, that one's already solved. He should have made it so it could be played! I don't know who could play a 120+ pound Rubix cube, but that's a different question...

I grabbed the code, so I'll take a look next time I fire up the cab. I'll let you know!

Yes, that stuff can definitely be removed. For a full tutorial, check this out: http://www.gameex.net/Support/SetupWizard/...63/Default.aspx Those lists are in 'Advanced MAME Settings' on pages 2, 3, and 4. You might also be asking about Radio and Weather. You can disable those on the 'HTML Applications' page. Good luck and let us know if there's anything else!
-
Are you talking about the short list of recently played games at the top of your game list? This can be turned off in the emulator setup in either the Advanced Configuration tool or the Setup Wizard. Do not delete the file or you won't be able to play it!

You could try a different theme. Some themes seem to be more problematic than others. If using a different theme fixes the problem, then we would at least know where to start.

The log file won't tell you why MAME didn't load. To figure that out, you need to run the "Run Last Game.bat" file in the GameEx Start folder. You might need to add PAUSE after the last line in order to see the error message. Once you figure out what it's choking on, you will have an idea what needs fixing. If you can't figure out the problem, post the error here and someone can help decipher it for you.

I think Tempest's box got redistributed with the last stimulus package. One of the big 3 CEO's probably got it and was all "WTF is this crap!? I can't use this to pay for fuel for my jet. Now how am I going to fly to Tahiti for that 'convention'?"

Oh right, that makes a lot more sense! It would definitely be better to have multi-joystick/gamepad capability IMO. It's not a big deal for people who just have a single GP encoder, but if you are using multiple gamepads then it might be. I don't know how many people would remap their controllers per game with gamepads, but if you have a GP encoder and at least one gamepad, then the format in the .cfg file will be slightly different. Simplified answer: YES, that would be better.

Multiple joysticks like for Assualt (and other tank games)?

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking how to configure a program with GameEx even when that program reproduces some of the same features of GameEx. I wouldn't talk about configuring HS here just because that sort of detail is better left to their own forum. If I were going to configure MAME to run via HS through GameEx, I would set it up as an Application. Then when you select MAME it would hide GameEx and launch HS so you could interact with it as normal. On a side note, although HS looks awesome, I notice that some of the game pages are a bit inconsistent. Sometimes the spinner/game selector shows on the right and sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure this is an artifact of different people creating what they think looks best. I have 2 concerns with HS that are tough to address: creating a consistent look and feel for all games; system specs. I haven't done any research into these other than viewing a few sample videos, so I don't know what the answers are though.

Once you compile MAME, you have to turn the hi-score stuff on in the mame.ini AFAIK. Not all games work with the hi-score stuff. There is also a new project that is making the hi-score stuff much more useful as they are expanding the compatible games list rather quickly.

I think Tom put something on the main homepage a while back, but I don't think it's getting updated regularly. There have been a few really helpful scripts/wrappers written since that was put together (and a lot of older ones that have been updated), so it would be good to update that page.

Most people here use AHK (AutoHotKey) to generate our scripts and loaders. AHK is really easy to write code for and has a lot of help via it's forum and nice documentation. Also, you can record actions that you physically perform on the computer that you would like reproduced (open blah.exe, click position x-y, etc.). I'm not sure if anyone put together anything back in one of the old threads or not, but either way, this shouldn't be hard to do. I personally would consider this a really easy way to learn a bit of AHK if you have the time. If you need some/a lot of help with it, let us know and someone can either step you through it or write something to do the job. I'm thinking this is a pair of ~5 line scripts. Each one will need to be set up in one version or the other of GameEx as an application. Should be pretty easy really!

Wow! If you've deleted that many games from your setup (via the delete game function in GameEx), I would definitely make a copy of your gameex.ini file. If you ever have to start over, you can grab the list of filtered roms from that file and manually copy it into the new config if needed. I can't help with the video problem, sorry. Perhaps you could post your log.txt file and your gameex.ini file. That might help someone figure out what's going on.

You can turn the adult games on/off like kenclops said, but that requires an update of your list to change anything. I'm sure you've already found that... Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this despite it being a common request in the features requests thread. There have been discussions about work-arounds though. SOOO, the only thing I can really recommend is consider using 2 installations of GameEx. If you get things set up how you want, you can copy the entire "C:\Program Files\GameEx" directory to another folder like "C:\Program Files\GameEx (Adult)". Then go to the setup for that new installation and turn on adult games and update your list. Now, this won't make it possible to hit a single button and turn the list on and off, but it will make it possible to do it in a couple minutes (however long it takes to start up GameEx on your machine). If you are running GameEx on a dedicated cabinet, the best solution is to add an application that will run a script to launch the alternate version of GameEx and kill the process for the first one. It's not super clean, but it should work and get you what you want...

You can use any command line version of MAME that you want and it should work fine. The only problem you might run into with older versions is that GameEx needs xml formatted game info. If you use a REALLY old version of MAME, you might only generate the old, non-XML formatted data. I personally use v0.125, but that's only because I haven't gotten around to compiling v0.128 yet. I personally recommend using the most recent full version of MAME that's available in general. I don't use u builds cause they do have errors introduced by the new trial code. I do NOT recommend using MAME32 or any other GUI version of MAME because it's both unnecessary and can become confusing when it comes to configuration. However, if you can run MAME from a command line with the release, you can use it with GameEx. Hope that helps more than confuses
