  2. If your hell bent on overclocking this thing I suggest keeping a log (pen and paper) of your stable clocks and refer back to it over the next few months to establish a reliably stable OC. Also, disable turbo and cool'n quiet as they will prevent you from getting a max clock. I recommend Prime95, HW monitor, CPUZ and heaven benchmark. As for thermal paste I recommend Arctic MX4 over Arctic silver. It conducts heat faster, is electrically nonconductive, and lasts for 8 years without need for reapplication. I pull open all my PS3s and replace the paste with this. Your power supply is overkill. I have a 300W packed full of crap and there is no issue at all with this APU. You can save some money on PSU, I've never had issues skimping (within reason) on one yet, 750W should serve all your needs well into the future though. Here is some info you'll find critical: Don't exceed these limits. They're taken directly from AMDs product details for the A10-5800K. A10-5800K Thermal specification = 74 celcius A10-5800K Voltage specification = 1.475V Overclocking AMD tutorial (windows): I should Point out that I own the same processor and a radeon 7750 low-profile pcie card. Overclocking this doesn't seem to produce great advance in PCSX2 speed. Some games I just can't play, Like gran turismo 3, but other I can like Kingdom hearts. So even with modern hardware PCSX2 pushes the limits. Give it another couple of years and maybe then it will run smoothly. But don't count on it, NFL blitz on MAME doesn't run smoothly and that was from 1999. Sometimes you have to come back to reality and give up for a while. Good luck, and have fun. Overclocking is kinda perilous at the start but isn't as scary as it used to be. There are lots of redundant features on modern boards that keep you from frying your investment. Still take it slow as you learn the art. Happy Clocking!
  3. What she is thinking: "He made that ugly arcade, spends thousands of hours on that Game-e-whatever online forum, and now he wants to spend $1200 on a computer desk thingy? If he spent half as much time taking out the garbage, mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, or cleaning maybe then I'd be willing to entertain these childish obsessions of his. I swear he loves that computer more than me!" What he is thinking: "AAGGHHH!!! Why does that stupid kid always win?. I swear if I had an eyefinity setup I'd kick his bald eagle A$$! Hmm, I wonder what's for dinner." What the kids are thinking: "Why does dad have to hog all the bandwidth with QOS?"
  4. Yea, but wouldn't that be all encompassing? I like the filter options for some emulators with lots of games, but not for others with few enough I can navigate through easily. I think there should be a way to hide just the filter controls without removing the database, or without resorting to theme editing tricks.
  5. Hey, this may not be what your looking for but the filtering options like category, year and manufacturer, along with descriptions of the games can be hidden by choosing the blank option at the top of the "database" drop-down box in the emulator setup menu of the wizard. This will work for emulators. I did this to clean space on my screen for the emulator pictures without the filter buttons being in the way. I don't have an extensive collection or need for the filters for emulators anyway, although I did like the descriptions. That's the tradeoff. Again, not sure if that helps for your exact situation. I may have misunderstood you. Good luck man.
  6. A Well deserved distinction Kemosabe ("trusty scout", or possibly "faithful friend"). +1 to uberpubert69's comment, I feel the same way. Great to see you still make time for the community considering the demands of work and family. We really appreciate the devotion man.

    Whassis?

    - First rule of project GameEx Evolution, "You don't talk about project GameEx Evolution! - Second rule of project GameEx Evolution: "You don't talk about project GameEx Evolution!!" - Third rule of project GameEx Evolution: "You don't talk about project GameEx Evolution!!!" I guess when you're told three times you were aptly warned. Don't be surprised if Tempest goes missing!
  8. Tempest Touched on this, but I wanted to make sure. You do have the correct BIOS for the Amstrad CPC right? You must also create a folder Named "roms" inside the MESS folder, the BIOS must be kept there and still be Zipped. This wiki might also be of help: http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/MESS In the wiki they mention some problems with CPC emulatuon in MESS. Hopefully you can get it running.
  9. I have a 60Gb fat too, fully backwards compatible. but there's no way I'm going to risk downgrading on that baby (I modified it to prevent the YLOD also and added a temperature sensor). The one from the goodwill cost me next to nothing, so I figured why not. But it sounds like this is a joyless venture anyway, the thing does plenty natively, and if there are no benefits to modifying it then I'll save myself the trouble.
  10. Hmm.. Sounds like it will be more trouble than it's worth then. I wish Sony hadn't removed the other os feature, it was why many users bought the PS3 in the first place. Seems like the definition of "bait and switch" marketing to me. It's a shame they don't give us a way to roll back the firmware to previous versions, instead forcing us to using "Unsafe" measures. Regardless, I'm surprised to hear that GameEx does not run in Linux, at least not natively. Isn't Linux pretty well established as a robust open source alternative now? I would have thought someone would have figured it out by now. I've messed around with Ubunto in virtualbox a bit and it seems like a decient OS, I would just need to get used to how thing work and find a list of programs that work for me. But one I can't do without is GameEx. I've considered making the jump to Linux in the past but something like this always prevents me. Oh well, a $25 blu Ray player is not bad to put somewhere else in the house I guess.
  11. Hey, the other day I returned some stuff to the local Goodwill (for in store credit only) and found a PS3 Slim 120GB, model CECH2001A. It was sold "As is, for parts, and untested". It looked like it had taken a ride down a flight of stairs, but It was $24.99 ($12 after my in store credit was applied). So I decided to give it try, I have another one so I could at least use it for parts later. I opened it and discovered why the case was cracked, the previous owner forgot the security screw under the void warranty sticker and forced it open. Then they pried the Blu Ray drive open to retrieve their disc. I fully disassembled it, cleaned it thoroughly, applied new and better thermal paste. Then I serviced the blu ray drive, which had a popsicle stick in it, and glued all the cracked/broken plastic back to the case. I sanded the glue a little and painted it white. I even cut a hole for the fan to cool the system and help prevent the Yellow light of Death (YLOD), if it hasn't already had it. When I plugged it in it started up just fine. I've tested it for hours and it seems to run perfectly. You can see the results attached. Since I have another PS3 and I don't want to sacrifice it, I can now experiment with this one. Does anyone know if GameEx can be put on a PS3? I was thinking of running linuex, but it requires downgrading the updates to when the PS3 supported the other OS option. And from what I've read that's easier said than done. Has anyone tried this? I'd be curious to hear how difficult it is and what functions can be retained (eg. blu ray, games, and etc.).
  12. Just to clearify because I found this a little confusing the first time I did it too. 1) Copy your GameEX folder over to the new computer. I recommend putting it in the default directory (C:\GameEx), but you can put it anywhere you want. 2) Install GameEx. Make sure to point the install at the same location you put your original GameEx folder. GameEx will install over the old folder and keep all the settings it contained previously. It does not erase any settings and reset them to default, as you might be worried about. I've done this numerous times now and it clones my setup perfectly every time, right down to the theme, emulator settings, and rompaths. Of course you will need to change rompaths, working directories, artwork paths, and etc. if they are not located in the exact same folder tree as before. Just make sure all the filepaths and drive letters match up as before and you're golden. I'm just reinterring what nullPointer posted, but I thought the instructions were a little vague and don't alleviate any apprehension about performing this procedure. It's a piece of cake.
  13. Because I use an odd setup for my arcade cabinet, a vertical screen (Res: 768 x 1366), Login stretches to fit my resolution. This is nice, except that all the profiles look squashed. Is there a way to display this correctly? I was thinking of only stretching the canvas/backdrop and forcing the same Aspect ratio for the overlays, similar to the way MAME does.
  14. Yes, thank you. That is exactly what I was looking for. For some reason the update list option does not work properly in my cabinet setup. This makes using the default MAME function in GameEX useless. It works on my HTPC with the same settings/tweaks? Weird. Rather than trying to track down the issue, I prefer using the emulator entries. I just needed the Map File to get the Names to display right. BTW: I tried to generate them myself with a couple of utilities, but for some reason they failed/crashed. Thanks again for the Map File.
  15. Never mind, I had change view disabled. Also it is best to apply a theme from the wizard instead of within gameex.
  16. I'm assuming there settings in the wizard that affect the way themes display. I'm having trouble getting some themes from displaying correctly, or even displaying at all. What settings need to be enabled to allow greatest compatibility? I wanted to try the 4th place winner Dark Champion - Carbon 720p. However I've downloaded it 3 times already and it just goes back to the theme chooser without changing the theme or even showing that the theme downloaded. I tried the 2nd place winner Paper Mario and it does not display correctly at all, the menu options are at the bottom of the screen and the artwork/background don't display. Same with the 1st place winner After Darkness. Pure GameEx works but I don't get the tiles to select from. At least it looks like there are supposed to be Wii like tiles to choose games from.
  17. Thanks, good catch. EDIT: 9/2/14 In case anyone wants a recap, this script should be placed in your startup folder. It will 1) run login.exe 3 seconds later and 2) send mouse clicks every 3 seconds to an area of screen out of view, making sure login is in the foreground. The screen resolution and location of login.exe may vary for you. So I have added descriptions behind semicolons (eg." ; help dialog that will not be run"). The script you may want to change is the "Run, [insert location of login.exe]" and "MouseClick, left, [insert custom coordinates]". Download "AutoHotKey" and copy the following script into notpad. Change the script as desired (see above). Then save as "login.ahk". This will run fine on that system. You can also compile it to an executable that will run on a system without AutoHotKey.
  18. It's all good. Here is the result of the last five hours. I added a loop so the click is sent every 3 seconds. Anecdote:
  19. You're correct that is the problem. The hot key section doesn't act like code, it holds up the process. So simply moving it after the launcher/focus grabber section made it work. I don't see what's so confusing about what I'm doing here. The login GUI has navigation controls that you can assign (eg. left arrow key moves left, and so on). These assignments are only for the GUI itself while you are selecting a profile. I want to select a profile with the joysticks on my arcade cabinet and still be able to use the arrow keys/enter on the keyboard. This way when I need to enter a password I can use the keyboard and press enter instead of having to press the select button on the arcade panel, but when selecting an unprotected profile I just need the panel (easy to understand for the kids). I suppose I could use Adultry's launcher to handle the launching part, but it's more intuitive/easier to use this instead. I mean all it does is: launch login.exe after waiting a few seconds Move the mouse out of the middle of view (which I wanted badly) Click on the screen to make sure the GUI has focus (I'm thinking of making the clicking a loop every couple of seconds to make sure it keeps focus. I had it loose focus on wakeup from sleep.) Give a few keys the same function.A simple little script that took me, a code noob, a few hours to make. It's not a big deal really I just posted it here in case someone else has a simalair need.
  20. I'm not using you app right now. I might, but I still need to assign multiple keys for navigation control. It's like needing a script to launch a launcher to load a profile for GameEX. Your app would add a step that might interfere with my script. So for now, I'm just trying to figure that part out. Maybe Headkaze will add the ability to add multiple keys to the same Navigation function in the future. Until then I'm forced to write code.
  21. It's just there incase the system loads something that steals focus away from the GUI. I have the launcher in the Startup folder and it loads almost as soon as the desktop shows. This is when all the system tray programs are also loading. One of them steals focus from the GUI sending it to the background while looking like it is running fine. But if you try to navigate, it won't respond until you click somewhere onscreen. The timeout just gives the system programs a chance to load and the left click makes doubly sure that the GUI is in front. This way I don't need the mouse (I'm running an Arcade Cabinet and want everything controlled by the joysticks and buttons). I've had various programs interfere with GameEX during the startup process. GameEX would start to load then something else would load and steal focus and leave GameEX to hang in the startup process without finishing, until I was able to re-select GameEX and then it would finish. I've had to disable as many startup processes as I can get away with to avoid this problem. Luckily this login program, and my little autohotkey fix, delay the start of GameEX long enough prevent this problem. It's all about redundancy. It's just another way to ensure problems that can occur don't. Yes, for a controller. The tanksticks I'm using is actually much easier. I only need to assign another key (8::Up for example). I did this but for some reason I can't get the AHK script to close after the login.exe closes now. Here's the AHK script if you're following along: I can't figure out the last 2 strings. ExitApp should close the AHK scrip upon reaching that line, so it must not be getting there. The waitclose must be holding it up indefinatly (since I did not set a timeout). The problem is I can't seem to be able to specify the process waitclose is watching. I haven't tried identifying it by the PID because I can't figure out how to store the unique PID created when oprning it in the run command earlier, and then specifying it in wait close. Maybe there's an easier way. Yes I tried Exit, all that did was remap my escape key to the start key (that made no sense).
  22. I realize this thread is quite old, but thought it the best place to post this. I made the following autohotkey script to accomplish two problems I had with the current login version: It first waits 3 seconds after startup before launching login.exe. This allows other system components to load, instead of stealing focus away. It then moves the mouse cursor to the black space in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. It also left clicks for redundantly in case the focus was stolen again after the 3 second wait. Unfortunately an autohotfix can't solve my last problem. I need to be able to add more than one key assignment to the navigation controls. I want to be able to control the UI with the joysticks and arrow keys. I also want to be able to select with both a button press and the enter key. Feature Request?
  23. Ok, I like the idea and simple UI. But I can't seem to figure out how to do anything but set up a user. How do I actually choose the GameEX settings that need to be changed on a per user basis? Is there a Tutorial anywhere? EDIT: I found this : http://www.gameex.com/Support/Tutorials/GameExLogin.aspx but it is not very inclusive. However, if I'm understanding it right, I need to launch the login first, then select a user I create, and from within GameEX use the configuration app. Then, the next time I login as a different user and use the configuration app for that user. Is that correct? It somehow will create a separate GameEX config or something? Ok, yea I was able to answer my own questions by playing around with it a bit. Basically it remembers who was logged in last, whether you use the configuration app from within GameEX or exit GameEX then launch the setup wizard. Any changes you make to the config will be saved for the last user logged in. So to configure another user you must first login as that user then configure GameEX as you normally would. Actually this is much easier than I thought, thanks Headkaze.
  24. Is there a way to hide games in mame, or other emulators, that are violent, graphic, suggestive, or what have you from the impressionable minds of our younger audience? I know that there has been a lot of requests about password protecting, but I haven't found a good way to hide games and re-enable them without going into the setup wizard. I read about a service mode. How does that work and wher is it located in the setup wizard. How do I choose what is in the "Kid mode" and what is in the "Mature mode" (So to speak). I don't have kids myself, but I have friends who bring their kids over. And what captivates their attention? Of course its the Arcade Cabinet. I want to hide games that might be offensive to their parents while still being able to enjoy a little Mortal Kombat myself, without having to enter the setup wizard every time. I'm sure this is a common request, and that their is something built in by now. GameEX has everything else, so Parental controls has to be in there in some form.
  25. Thanks, that was it. I I must have thought it would show games I didn't actually have in the HDD. You might add a line in the info next to that entry to make it more clear for first timers.
