  1. I can remember seeing this one for the first time when I was a kid - absolutely jaw dropping! I mean, it went up and down!! Never played it much though as in Germany minors were banned from arcades back in the days... and so I gave it a try for the comp and I find it surprisingly playable, even with my digital joysticks. Add the music and boom! another 3 hours gone Nice! score - 7,221,230

  2. I just noticed that the page I linked doesn't mention the most important thing: you can't shoot a single bullet from the beginning of the stage until you hover over one of the trees to trigger the train. If you do this right, you'll hear a 'choo choo' sound (start shooting immediately at this point) and a moment later the train will enter the screen. The train carries 6 powerups. Destroying it and collecting powerups is worth about 40,000 points.

  3. 544,100 I hope the fact that I had one credit left isn't a problem. This game adds 1 to the last digit of the score if you use a continue, so it's easy to spot when someone used it. I don't know whether you're aware of the Gunbird train trick, guys. So far I've only been attempting it when I get Doramasher as the first stage, maybe it's time I practised all possible scenarios.

  4. Yes, I did the R-L-R-R. It's a good pattern! I'm trying my best to stay 3rd, but the P-Team is tough. We're actually 109 pts down from first now. Different routes mean different stages. In Out Run you have 14 selectable stages. The best way as determined by many, start by going right, hit the mountains. Go left there, to the Dutch inspired Alpine stage. Going right there leads to the autumn like tree stage and then right once more ends up at the "d" goal.

  5. Update: I've adopted NVidia's DSR feature as described here for TPA: http://pinballarcadefans.com/showthread.php/9055-Pinball-Arcade-in-4K-Resolution-with-new-nvidia-driver Works beautifully for FX2 as well. Basically, the game renders at 4K and is downsampled to 1080p. The DMD renders in standard resolution, at least the way I have it configured. So, in terms of the dotmatrix.cfg and the mirroring script, the X position just gets scooted to the right 1920 px. The trick for retaining video backglasses is that PBX must also be run at 4K. FX2 can be set up to run at 4K and the resolution will change on the fly from the transition from PBX to FX2, but you lose the backglass when that happens. You don't want to have to make the resolution change when launching from PBX, so FX2 must be the same 4K resolution. Video media plays fine and is properly scaled, but the downside is that it does scroll more slowly. For me, it's tolerable. Well worth it. And perhaps even this may be tweaked by creating a custom profile in the Nvidia Control Panel. Jeff and I worked out settings for pixel perfect DMD at various resolutions. I'm using my third monitor's native resolution rather than a custom resolution which is why the size of the capture is different from the previous script. Hopefully the info will make its way into some future update for NukeLauncher. I've also added a filter preset to improve the contrast of the image in the playback window. A better image that doesn't seem to me to have any impact on performance.

  12. Yeah, I haven't talked to him since I asked him to see if she would do it. But things are definitely turning around for me. I'm feeling better, I'm playing more games. I've been battling a major medical bill for 7 years that the State is offsetting my tax returns to pay back, and I finally got it all cleared up today. She's doing some awesome magic for me. Now if only my store manager would leave/transfer (like she's been supposed to have done for 3 years) then I could finally be relieved of my one of my major stresses at work and I'm going to try to start working full time. Get my life together. Get a car and move out on my own finally. Hopefully things are looking up.

  13. UPDATE: With 5 minutes of research I was able to confirm what I suspected about Asteroids REV 4. Not only do the mini-UFO shots wrap around, but the little guy also fires at you immediately upon entering the screen, rather than waiting until he gets 1/6th of the way across the screen as in earlier versions. From the MAME history.dat (rev. 1.41a):

  14. Donkey Kong - 194,000. I had 190k with THREE lives left. My personal best was clearly in my sights. Then, I died THREE times on the same L7 barrel board. So frustrating! Asteroids (5 lives) - 29,910 I'm a 50k player on Asteroids, but here it took me quite a while to even get this score. I hope everybody is actually using the correct ASTEROIDS (REV 4) rom and not just artificially limiting themselves to 5 lives using REV 2 or, even worse, REV 1. I bring this up because my romset did not contain REV 4, and I had to go out on the net to find it. No question, there are more differences in REV 4 than just the 5-life limit. It is considerably harder than REV 2, most notably because the mini-UFO's are smarter. In REV 2, the mini-UFO's always fire directly at you, meaning that if you don't have a clear shot at one, you can still survive by letting him fly by, while you hide on the side of the screen opposite the direction the UFO is heading. Since the UFO's bullets only go part way across the screen, eventually they will not have enough range to hit you, and you're safe. Not so in REV 4. The same range limitations apply, but the UFO is smart enough to aim the other way and wrap his shots around the screen to hit you. Needless to say, this pretty much doubles the difficulty; I had several games where I was struggling to even get the first free life at 10k, and it took me a while to figure out why.
