Meaning of forum "badges"

Completely unrelated question of this topic:

I see that people has a badge in the profile picture. Looks like new people get a red hand and administrators got a shield.

Are there more badges that other people can get?

The "badges" are forum generated and a new feature. I am not sure of the nature of them. Is getting the "hand" a good thing? :p 

I will split this from the topic so it can be properly closed.

The forum software is constantly being tweaked and improved, as Draco already pointed out the recent upgrades brought with it some configured badges.  It really boils down to what the author chooses to utilize of the available options.
