Hello, I am new to GameEx and am having trouble with a couple issues.

1. I want to remove all the extra MAME games and categories that show up when I run the program so that I only find the ROMs I chose

2. I want to use other emulators that I downloaded from websites and somehow plug them into GameEx so that they run the ROMs rather than use the emulators provided by GameEx. I was told by someone that I need to point GameEx to the correct path in the Setup Wizard, but can someone explain that in more detail? I know where to open the Setup Wizard but where inside it do I go and what options to I enter.

3. Also when I try to run a ROM using [Arcade] Arcade MAME the game seems to load to %100 but then it blacks out and takes me back to the Play This Game menu. What am I doing wrong?

Please help me with these 3 issues.

It's easier if you deal with one issue at a time, and also, please don't open multiple threads with the same questions.  This only confuses matters and creates unnecessary clutter in the forums.

1.  Reference Dazzle's custom lists guide   Removing the tiles from your ROM directory is always an option, but a cumbersome method.

2.  To clarify here are no emulators provided by GamEx.  If you are referring to those refreneced in the setup wizard under the Emulator Selection screen, in almost all cases newer versions of those same emulators are available.  So by all means go grab the latest version.

GameEx is simply a director, when configured properly your simply telling GameEx to look at a particular application and execute it.  Assuming your paths are correct, it does just that, and runs the application.  There is no need to "plug" these into GameEx.  I would install GameEx is the default directory, and place my other contents elsewhere.

i.e.

C:\ emulators

and within that directory the emulators you wish to run

C:\emulators\nestopia

and within the emulator directory add any number of the widely available emulators out there.

Then inside the Setup Wizard use the Emulator Setup section to direct GameEx to the proper path to that emulators directory, and so on down the list to the paths for each of the respective supporting elements directory folder.

fRequEnCy has a very informative post for lots of the particulars

3.  Post your ini and also the log immediately following the issue you are describing.  See the links in my sig if you need help locating this files

For problem #1

I am going to post my questions in Dazzle's custom lists guide

For problem #2

I attached a screen pic showing what I entered in the Emulator Setup section of the Setup Wizard to this post. I entered the shown information but the emulator doesn't show up after I run GameEx and look in the emulated games area. Can someone please explain how to fix this?

For problem #3

I attached a copy of my GameEx.ini file and my log file

Also, the configuration you posted there has 'enabled' option set to 'no'. Set it to 'yes'. ;)

It appears you are running integrated mame, which brings with it the GameEx features, including custom menus, filtering etc., things not available in the stand alone emulator.

but

It also appears you have configured mame in the emulator section

You need to pick one, with my personal preference being the integrated version.

LOL that helped a little bit thanks! Now i can see the emulator in the Emulated Games menu inside GameEx and I can also see the ROM that I put in the Roms folder. But when I try to run the ROM it fails to work. I am able to run the ROM in the emulator outside GameEx though so i'm not sure what is wrong.

I removed MAME in the Emulator Section, but now the game doesn't show up in the game list. Plus I have to look through all the other games that comes with the Integrated MAME this brings me back to Problem #1

A couple things come to mind:

Does that game happen to be a Japan release, or anything else being filtered?  Some good titles are often excluded by leaving Japan in the filtered category.

Does your romset match your mame version?  I noticed one of your folders was pointing to a 0.145 directory, which if true to it's title and combined with running with a newer version of MAME can create all sorts of weird anomalies.

Also, don't forget to update after any configuration changes.

-I don't think it is a japan release. How can I check?

-What is a 0.145 directory?

-I will try and update the game list and then search again. But can you take a look at Dazzle's custom lists guide  and answer my posts there? or should i just post them here? I really need to get rid of all the other games in the MAME game list so that I can find the ROM I choose much more easily.

- I updated the game list and the ROM still doesn't show up. I looked through the whole game list and still didn't find it.

Your romset directory appeared to be in a folder named 0.145, which to me indicates a set for MAME 0.145, so pretty old.  This running with a modern MAME release 0.17x is more likely than not going to be problematic.

Never mind, it seems that is in the emu section.

emu_1_version=0.145

GameEx may have pulled down a dated version of MAME.

I don't know of any way to actually check, but you can remove Japan from the filter and update to see if it shows up, but admittedly it's a bit of a long shot.

You can also configure GameEx to not exclude it.

Don't filter these roms in the Advance MAME Settings section

I removed the filter for Japan, and then updated the list, and then scrolled through the list, but still didn't find the ROM. This is only the case for the integrated MAME, but when I use the [Arcade] Arcade MAME emulator the ROM shows up, but the game doesn't work when I run it. I attached screen pics of the settings I put for the Advanced MAME section in the Setup Wizard.

As shown in the picture above in the quote is my command line correct for the use of this emulator to open ROMs? If not what command line do I use? I was able to create a batch program that opens the emulator and then tells the emulator to open the ROM but I'm still not sure what to put as the command line.

I went to this webpage and found some information on how to use the Command Line http://www.gameex.com/setup-wizard-configuration-guide/#mamesettings. I attached a screen pic of some examples I found on what format to use for the Command Line. If you look at the example for Project64 it looks as though this Command Line is only for one ROM at a time. What do I type so that all of my ROMs show up in the game list?

The correct command line should be  Command=Project64.exe [ROMPATH]\[ROMFILE]  - This tells GameEx how to open the ROMs it finds, regardless of the number in the path.

Also, you keep posting the image of your Project64 Emulator setup with it showing Enabled set to No.

Unfortunately, I am running into an error trying to open your gameex.ini and log.txt files. Can you repost them using the spoiler tag (eye) instructions found in the GameEx How to ask for help link in my signature?  Thanks.

-Thank you! I used the Command Line Project64.exe [ROMPATH]\[ROMFILE] and now it works. The only problem is that it doesn't open in full screen. How do I do that?

-Sorry that I posted the image of my Project64 Emulator setup with it showing No. It is actually set to Yes now.

-I will now upload the gameex.ini and log.txt files again, once I read your How to ask for help instructions in order to find out what a spoiler tag (eye) means.

Yep, saw it and thanks. Glad that worked for you. I think there is an issue with the emulator itself regarding full screen display and I am not sure if there is a fix for it. I do not run the emulator so my input is basic at best.

I found an option within the emulator under settings that says "On loading ROM go to full screen" it almost works but there is some kind of glitch that keeps the screen small. The mouse disappears so I can tell that it is in full screen mode, but the screen is small.

Also when I open the emulator outside of GameEx it does go to full screen

What could be wrong?

Ok I figured it out. I was putting the emulator in the GameEx default Emulators folder in the c drive. The Emulator I'm using needed to be in the program files folder for some reason, because that is the folder it goes to once it is installed on the computer. This for some weird reason allowed the Project64 1.6 emulator to enter full screen mode once GameEx opened it and then ran the ROM.

OK so Problem #2 is solved. But I still need help with Problem #3 and Problem #1

For Problem#3 I disabled the integrated MAME and am using the [Arcade] Arcade MAME.

Can someone please help me?

Are you talking about the list of games when you run Mame outside of GameEx or do you mean that you want GameEx to show only the Roms you have inside of GameEx's Mame lists?

Try creating a folder in your Mame folder named "Roms" (C:\Games\Mame\Roms for example). You must place your roms in that folder for standalone Mame to work. Try again to start the game by manually double clicking the mame.exe, If should work. If not, the issue is not with GameEx, it is with your mame/rom installation. Have a search around to sett it up correctly, verify it works and come back here to finish setting up GameEx.

I recommend using Integrated Mame in GameEx:

  • GameEx Setup Wizard --> "Mame Setup" --> "Mame Path" = the folder containing Mame.exe (the one you verified worked). On the same page, make sure the "MAME EXE" = the mame.exe application itself. Lastly, make sure the "Rom path" field is pointed at the rom folder that you verified was working. This can be any folder though, it's not required to be the one nested within Mame's folder. However, use that one first to get things working. You verified those roms worked outside of GameEx, so we want to use them to make sure GameEx is setup correctly. Then, if everything is working, you can change it.
  • GameEx Setup Wizard --> "Advanced Mame Setup" --> "Only Existing Roms" = "Yes", to list only the games in your rom folder. You can also, enable/disable lists in this section (show lightgun games, show vertical games, and etc). It can be overwhelming if all of these are enabled. If you just have a handful of games it is cleaner and easier to disable most of these.
  • GameEx Setup Wizard --> "Enable/Disable Features"  --> "Hide Update List" = "No". Run a list update and wait for it to finish (Can take a long time for a full romset)..

Hopefully this helps, good luck!
