[RESOLVED] Trying to link GameEx and compiled mame64, not sure what is up.

Just set rom paths, updated games lists... GameEx goes to launch donkey kong, then comes back to the "launch donkey kong" screen. I checked both mame and gameex .inis, I had heard if mame and gameex skip info game info or something it could get messed up, tried only one program skipping game info, tried both doing so, tried neither doing so... nothing. I've attached my .ini files for both GameEx and Mame64.

I will also say, when I select donkey kong in gameex, it says "launching dkongo"

is it supposed to be named dkongo? bc the zip is dkong. Runs flawlessly in standalone mame64.

Let's get the log.txt file to right after the dkongo launch attempt.

Where do I obtain that?

This is normal behavior for a "just downloaded and installed version of GameEx".

GameEx comes with some test titles that only show in the MAME list, so that you don't go in there and feel like "Wow, what's going no, there's nothing here". Instead it lists some bogus games, that there are no roms loaded for. GameEx will simulate running these, and then immediately go right back into the previous menu.

You must have a path incorrect.

IF GameEx "Crashes", There is an error log that may help you find out why. To view it, Go to: Start Menu > Program Files > GameEx > Utilities> Log File

Take a look towards the bottom, and see if it shows an error:

This is what Draco is asking for.

Be certain that you start GameEx, experience the issue, and immediately exit and post the log.

Check that running cmd.exe, does that jibe with your directory tree?

All I'm saying is that I test this stuff out all the time, and a great deal of it while away from my actual rig.

I see exactly what you are describing all the time with on machines that have no games library, but instead point to an empty default path.

How many games do you see?

Also, did you "update" your MAME list after you completed your run through the configuration wizard, and went back into GameEX?

Thanks for your time Thurman..

Yes my directory is

C:/mame64/

See every available game. Downloaded only doing to test, still waiting on 1063 romset

And I ran update list in gameex

"launching dkongo" is the give away for me here, it's totally bogus.

It "looks" just like it's launching, right? I mean shows snaps and all, but then does nothing but go back to the selection menu?

I'm probably missing the obvious right now, but I see this behavior routinely on machines without any romset.

Downloaded only doing to test, still waiting on 1063 romset

Wait, no romset? That's the problem then, you've got nothing to run.

Oh ok. Just downloaded a random DK to test it out, figures. So when my full 1063 comes in the mail, dump all the games in the roms folder, update list via gameex and i'll be in business then?

Edit- I do have dkong.zip, and it runs in mame by itself. Not gameex though.

Its been in my roms folder and I've run update list hehe. That's the point of my post. Can't understand why gameex won't launch it

Make some alterations In the filtering section:

VerifyROms to False

OnlyRoms to True

NoGameInfo to True

remove Japan from the filter list (retains some good fighting games)

Be sure to update after making the changes

OnlyWorking=True

AllowImperfect=True

VerifyRoms=True

OnlyRoms=False

NoGameInfo=False

GameFilter=Japan;Korea;Asia;Hispanic;Bootleg;French;German;Hack;Prototype;Hardware;Spanish;(Easy;(harder

GameFilterOn=True

Lastly if none of that works, include the name in this DNF list:

DoNotFilterROMS=pacman;splatter

Note that I don't change the OnlyRoms and NoGameInfo, but others here do, and with positive results. As always, YMMV depending on your setup, so play around with it.

Cool thanks for the info will try tonight..when set to true, what is gameex verifying??

Posted

That the ROM is 100% accurate (is my understanding), which is unlikely just from the general nature of MAME.

I look at it like this, in the case of a merged set, where there's a lot of sharing between titles going on, nothing's complete!

This is a layman talking though :D

Ok, will try it out, when I get my matching 1063 romset I'll see if turning it back to true has any effect. Of course if it works in the first place. Thanks Thurman!

NP man.

Just to be clear, you will lose a lot of games with it set to true. You can do a search here for "not all mame games showing" or the like, and you will see.

It is a quite frequent topic here.

Damn definitely dont want to lose games..I have no doubt I will figure it out w your help and that of the community👍

VerifyRoms will make a check that each rom has every single file, in the right place, with the right filename. This can end up excluding a lot of roms because of the way MAME is updated, the difference in romsets, and how each user may be using different options (ie the merge option as tthurman noted).

For instance: MAME may report that a rom needs a certain soundfile to run - the 'Verify' reports that the soundfile is missing (or at least not in the expected place)! This will result in a fail and therefore the rom being exculded. However, the game will usually run perfectly without that file! For this reason i usually turn it off - so roms won't be excluded because of one file that is not really important.

OnlyRoms will tell GameEx to only make checks against roms you actually possess, in the RomPath you have defined, and will subsequently only show games you have physically in the path you provided. This option is there to stop complete romsets being displayed, when the user has a partial, or a custom set compared to the original or 'full set' (which is nearly 30k!). Using OnlyRoms, users can be sure that only the roms they actually have are being displayed.

Hey guys, been away a few nights..

So I still can't get gameex to see my dkong rom. I've set it to only roms, so it only shows what I have, and it's showing pacman and splatter.. 2 games I certainly don't have in my c:\mame64

\roms folder. Added it to the bypass rom list (where pacman and splatter are also listed) and I get hung up on 55% while it's trying to verify mame during a list update. Any clue what in the world is going on??

I don't recall ever seeing a complete log, just a portion of one in a screen capture.

Have you triple, and quadruple check your paths? It sure seems it's not pointing to the correct directory

Posted

Solved. Changed "Only Working" to False. Do you guys set it to false as well? I'd thought non-working would render them unplayable files.
