Thanks - it said that -ddraw wasn't a valid function or something, so I took it out of the command line and now the game works! I'm assuming I didn't remove anything particularly important? Thanks again.

Ok done - thanks. Here's the output - any problems in here? @ECHO OFF C: CD "C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame_133" mame.exe galaxian -rompath "C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame_133\roms;C:\Emulators\Mame32\Mame_133\roms" -nowindow -hwstretch -ddraw -joy -skip_gameinfo -bezel -artwork_directory artworkgameex

Pretty much finished setting up my emulators in GameEx today, and pretty pleased with myself, until I found a problem in my Mame emulator that I hadn't noticed before..... Went to play an old favourite in Galaxian - on the menu, so far so good. The video plays, the artwork is there etc, but when I select to play the game, GameEx shows me the controls, and the next action is to take me back to the menu (the menu where I can select Play Game). Missing rom I thought, but it's definitely there, and the Rom path is set correctly. I can play the game in the Mame Emulator itself. What could I have possibly done that GameEx is not finding it? I have the Roms filtered a bit to stop faulty games etc, and I've run the update list. Any thoughts? Thanks

Thanks Headkaze, although I'm not sure this feature actually helps with what I'm trying to do. I'm pretty sure I'm still left with changing the settings in each of the individual Mame cocktail games as my only solution (but sure this new feature will be useful as well!)
-
Ok, I drew a picture so there's no confusion about what I want. You pretty much summed it up in your response. So, referring to the picture, the default side for playing games is Side One (which has a 6 button layout for each player), where both players sit side by side for fighting games etc, played horizontally. If, however, a game like Space Invaders is selected, the first player plays on Side Two (with a 3 button layout), and the screen flips and Player Two plays from Side Three. Apologies for not being clearer in the first place. Thoughts on the best way to accomplish this? Cheers

Here's a newbie question - how does one upgrade? Is it just a matter of installing the new version in the same directory as the old one? And if so, I won't lose any of my config settings will I? Thanks
-
lol - you're killing me here Tempest - I thought you said that wouldn't work for what I wanted it to do?

Hey can you guys stop hijacking my thread I still don't have a definitive solution to my problem...... (PS I've been loyal for all of 3 weeks!)
-
I thought it sounded too simple, especially as others have talked about having to change the setting in each of the cocktail games individually. So that means I've back to this as the solution right?? Now that we're talking about the same thing - from what you're saying I can do the following a) use Romlister to identify the cocktail games? and use CFG Magician to change the dipswitch setting on those games to play vertically and to flip for the 2nd player? If that's my only solution, then what exactly does the Rotator Plugin do??
-
Thanks Tom - that sounds pretty easy! One more potentially silly question - where do I find the rotation plugin (checked the utils page - not there?). Cheers
-
Yes, I said it backwards - good pick up!
-
Ahhhh, now this is making some sense to me (thanks!). Ok, all I want is for the cocktail games to flip - so that the 2 players can sit opposite each other. All other games can be played from the 3rd side, horizontally. Now that we're talking about the same thing - from what you're saying I can do the following a) use Romlister to identify the cocktail games? and use CFG Magician to change the dipswitch setting on those games to play vertically and to flip for the 2nd player?
-
You're right, but I'd argue that having the requirement to use buttons to rotate the display each time actually makes life harder for the player than it needs to be. Might be easy enough for the person who built the cab, but try telling a 10yo that some games have to manually rotated whilst others dont. I'd rather spend the extra time at set up to make things more seamless for the player.
-
Ok, so that answers my question about changing each game individually (how did you identify all the Vertical games by the way - Romlister?). But that takes me back to my original question - will CFG Magician take away the need to change them individually (ie will it change them all at once?).
-
Thanks for all the replies guys, but I'm still totally confused. Ok, I get the bit about leaving GameEx set to horizontal, and letting MAME deal with flipping the vertical games. What I don't get is how exactly I do that. Bkenobi - would you mind being a little more specific in what you mean above? And if the above works, do I still need to change each individual (vertical) game file? Thanks (and apologies for the newbie questions!)
-
Ok, have been doing some reading on this (all day actually) in an effort to answer my own question! From what I've read, it seems that CFG Magician may be the answer to my problems? If I run CFG Magician to automatically flip all of the Vertical (Cocktail) games, am I right in saying that when I start the game it will flip to Vertical, and then when it's Player 2's turn, it will flip 180 degrees? So, to clarify what I'm looking for - players will sit at the 3rd side of the cab, select a game, and if it's a 2-player vertical game the screen will automatically flip and players move to the controls at the end of the cab?? (please be correct - it's doing my head in!).

Hi all, Have spent the last week or so configuring GameEx, setting up emulators etc. Being new to this it's been a pretty painful experience, but I'm slowly getting there, and learning a lot along the way. For the config I've obviously just been using a PC and viewing everything on a normal vertical screen. But as it's my intention to use GameEx in a 3-sided Cocktail Cab, I suddenly came to the realisation that GameEx may not support this!! I can see in the Config whether to set it to Vertical or Horizontal - but not both. Obviously in a 3-sided cocktail some games will play vertically on the '3rd side' which has a 2-player, 6 button layout, whilst others will play horizontally where the 2 players face each other with a 3 button layout. Can I set this up in GameEx??
-
Thanks - so I take it from what you're saying is that I can't change the names that are displayed, without getting into Custom Menus. In the Advanced MAME Configuration I can filter etc, but not change names as such. Thanks for the Enable/Disable Features tip.

Hi all, Have set up GameEx now, and have my basic MAME games running nicely. A couple of questions re the menus - where does GameEx read the name of the game from? Can I change the name? For exmaple, my Space Invaders displays as 'Space Invaders/Space Invaders'. Doesn't need to say it twice right....so where do I change it? Also can someone tell me where the option is to 'dumb down' the menu choices - for example, I don't want users to be able to go into the Configuration option. I'm sure I saw it somewhere when I was setting up - just can't remember where. Thanks

Problem solved - I downloaded some different codecs from Shark007, and all good now - thanks

bump - anybody please?

Hi all - new to this, so please bear with me. Have been setting up GameEx for the first time, and apart from having some problems with some of the emulators (a problem for another day), I've at least got MAME up and running and I can play the games ok. The issue I have is that when I scroll through the list of games, I don't see any of the snap files or videos, so there's nothing to indicate what the game looks like. When I click on a game, however, I can see the Marquee, Flyer, Cabinet etc (providing of course the file exists). I think I've mapped everything ok, and there's no problems when I run the Verify process. So where in the config have I missed the option to display this? I've also just realised that all of my video files are in 'Flash Video' format and not .avi - is that an issue? Is there anything I can do to make this format work in GameEx? Thanks

[RESOLVED] .NET Framework Initialization Error

Thanks Brian - I'll give that a crack tonight and will let you know how I go. -
Hi all, New subscriber to GameEx, and trying to install for the first time on a PC I've just purchased (so don't know a great deal about what software is or isn't installed). Copied the GameEx install files over from an external hard drive, but when I try to run the SetUp Wizard I get an error '.NET Framework Initialization Error' .....'Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application'. With no idea what that meant, I installed .NET Framework 4 Client Profile SetUp thinking that would solve the problem. It didn't - what do I need to do? (and please be specific with solutions - my computer knowledge is average at best...) Thanks
