  1. There have been a number of topics about remotes, but none for a while. As far as I know, remotes should work fine with GameEx as long as you can get them working with Windows. You may need to use a script to smooth some things out, but I think the gist of those other threads was that things worked ok as is once you get it configured in Windows.
  2. I think he's saying that GameEx is setting something back to default on automatic update. This requires him to manually change the setting back for it to work the way he needs it...which requires him to login somehow. I thought Tom addressed this problem long ago...
  3. Absolutely. Those are just in there as examples, but you can certainly delete the emulator and set up your own.
  4. Yes it does. I went to the website today and it looks like it's no longer freeware though. The older versions (5.3 and older) should be available (I think Tom is hosting them), but new versions cost $10USD for all future releases. IMO, 5.3 is good enough for pretty much everything though.
  5. I don't use GameEx's built in remapping capability (even though it should work fine for most simple things). I personally recommend XPadder for this type of thing.
  6. Most people here recommend fraps (or is it frapps) for capturing video.
  7. Circo's set includes different versions of all movies. One of the options is for artwork. You can't easily add artwork to a movie once it's recorded if that's what you are asking for.
  8. There's a command line option. You can also put it in the mame.ini file. I think it's -screen, but I could be wrong. EDIT: Check out the MAME docs: http://mamedev.org/source/docs/windows.txt.html Look at line 196. That section details how to set up your screens.
  9. Beyond compare is capable of comparing the contents of any file (ascii or otherwise). It's not very useful to view the contents of a binary file of course, but it is useful in seeing if the files are exactly the same.
  10. Classic ads are only going to be available in SDTV resolutions...best case. That means that if you are watching them on a large HDTV in full screen, they will look like arse. I've noticed that most classic ads are stored in lower quality too, but that might be based more on the source than the actual encoding. I assume many of the ads were resurrected from OLD VHS tapes people had sitting around. You aren't going to get optimal quality off an old tape like that, so you get what you get. However, I have seen some better sets around that you might be more happy with. Sorry, can't link to any of them based on the forum rules.
  11. You can mount a folder or drive to a specific location. It's possible that you could mount your DVD root folder to c:\DVD_ROMS for instance. Then point GameEx to that folder. I don't know of a quick way off the top of my head to call that mounting point via a command line, but it shouldn't be too difficult. EDIT: A quick google search found this: http://ss64.com/nt/mountvol.html Looks to me like you could call: MOUNTVOL C:\DVD_ROMS E: Then when done: MOUNTVOL E: /d EDIT2: Hmmm, I tried this and it didn't work for me. I know it can work, but I don't have any time right now to test further. The mountvol command is the answer though.

    .bat file

If you need to wait for a given time, you can use the sleep command. It's not available by default in XP, but it's a free power tool as I recall. The command is just "sleep <time>", so it's pretty easy to instantiate. I prefer it over pinging, but they both work. Btw, if you are going to use ping, you should ping your local host (127.0.0.1) rather than an outside system (http://www.ip-adress.com/whois/1.1.1.1).
  13. Some of those lists require a minimum number of plays and/or time played. I'm not sure what the filter is exactly, but every game you fire up won't immediately be added to the list.

    .bat file

I think when you use a "start" command that you must specify the working path. If you don't, I believe the new process will use the default path specified in the system files. I could be wrong though...
  15. There is an option to turn off the update list item. If that item is turned off in the setup, you won't be able to see it to update your list.
  16. Btw, if you are going to use a Joystick->Key stroke program, I highly recommend XPadder. I don't know if it's truly still being worked on, but the "final" version that's freely available is awesome as is! I prefer it FAR above the other options.
  17. I was pretty sure Tom updated the Setup Wizard so you could map the hat switch, but maybe that's different than the POV? Anyway, it should work but if it doesn't then perhaps Tom needs to take a quick look at it. I don't believe that Tom is using anything automatic for registrations, so I suspect he will have to see your confirmation and then manually send you the file. If so, it should be pretty quick but not instantaneous.
  18. Is this a standard installation of Windows or is it a cut down version? Some of the lite versions don't include some database stuff that GameEx needs.
  19. I don't know. When I set up Zsnes this was taken care of by default. I was shocked that it worked, but Zelda saved my game from session to session without me setting anything up. You might just need to have the path defined and valid for it to work.
  20. Did you install the registration file?
  21. Interesting. The problem is that even if a drink is quite a ways from the controls, if someone tips it toward the joystick, it will move pretty quickly and inevitably find the opening. I don't think there's anything that can be done about damage to the joystick, but I'd certainly try to control the damage. The drip pan is a good idea. My grill has a large pan under it that routes any liquids to a small collection tray. That tray can simply be removed and cleaned from the front. The larger pan can be removed from the back if it gets really nasty. Anyway, I would personally do something for the PC and encoders. I wouldn't worry too much about the controls.
  22. I've been meaning to ask a question. What precautions have you taken to make sure that a spilled drink doesn't cause a HUGE problem? I see two problem areas: controls, screen. If the glass is sealed with silicone, it should be fine (as I recall, it is). Did you seal the controls as well? I don't see any way to protect the joystick other than some kind of a drip catcher under it on the inside of the cab.
  23. I don't have the game, but I'm pretty confident this is a situation where the file you launch is a loader. When you launch the game from the exe, does that process stay in the task manager? I suspect it's starting a different task and closing. If so, you need to find the process that's spawned and add it to an advanced config.
  24. I'm using standard 8-ways, not analog. I guess Windows treats the stick as analog anyway, which I didn't realize. It sounds like u_rebelscum over at BYOAC had the same suggestion, so I'll definitely be giving this a try over the weekend. Thanks HK! For reference: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95716.0
  25. I asked the same question at BYOAC, but in case I don't get a response, I thought it might be interesting to ask here as well. Whoever answers first, I'll put on the other board to close out the thread. I'm trying to play Q*Bert with standard 8-way joysticks. I'm not sure why, but MAME won't let me map multiple inputs to the directions, so I can't map my diagonals as I want. I really don't have a clue why this is a problem as I've had no problem mapping multiple inputs to other controls. Help? Oh, I should mention that I tried manually editing the cfg file to add both directions, but when I go to MAME, the directions don't work at all then.
