  1. It should work, but you have to make sure the name of the application and the video match. One way to incorporate games is using .lnk files in an emulator rather than an external application. If you do it that way, I know it will do videos the way I described. If you set things up the other way, you may have to play with things a bit since I've never messed with that side of things. Tom would know off the top of his head though!
  2. There is no "correct" or "incorrect" place to put the extra content for you roms (videos, snaps, box art, etc). There are a few ways that are common though. Split out everything by type of content, then by system. (e.g., c:\emulation\box art\NES)Split everything by system, then content. (e.g., c:\emulation\NES\box art)Split everything by emulator, then content. (e.g., c:\emulation\Nestopia\box art)I personally prefer option 2, but I can see uses for the other ways. I think the consensus around these parts is also with method 2, although I do recall discussions talking about the other directory structures. Do whatever makes the most sense to you.
  3. You might be interested in using custom menus. If you utilize them, you can have the menus look ANY WAY you want! Also, if you use the mameemumap feature, you can combine an emulator into the MAME list seamlessly. On my primary cab, I have both set up and they work GREAT!
  4. Yeah, I turned it on and, to my dismay... It worked exactly how I wanted it out of the box! I guess I forgot to go back to that announcement thread. Thanks!!!
  5. Just a suggestion... Perhaps you could make the game selectable in the card so that if you see a game you aren't familiar with, it will link you to gamesdbase.com (or another site if you chose)?
  6. Seems like you should be able to vote once for each installation/cab! I have 2 cabs running GameEx and am loving it!
  7. That would work. If you get two drives, one should be fast and one should be large IMO. If you can find drives that are both fast and large, you don't need 2, but you will probably pay more for the one drive than you would for 2 that meet the need. Anyway, I would put the applications and OS on the fast one and the roms, movies, etc on the larger one. If both drives you are looking at have the same spec, it's a toss up if you need 2 or not. I personally have used 1 drive for my OS and apps and a second for files for YEARS and have been pleased with the setup. Personal choice though...
  8. According to this site: http://www.quietpcus...se-P646C49.aspx It has 3 internal 3.5" bays and 2 external 5.25" bays. That means that you can certainly have 2 hard drives in there. Heck, you can even have a slot between them open to allow for better air flow (a good thing). Oh, and one other thing to keep in mind... If you want to, you can always add external drives to a system. This isn't the slickest method, but it definitely works!
  9. You can look up specs for specific hard drives (probably available on avs forums as well). Bigger hard drives can take longer to find files (latency), but there are other things that determine the speed of the drive as well. The big hitters are latency (for reading/writing small files primarily) and throughput (the actual sustained transfer speed). You can get very fast drives, but they will likely be much smaller and definitely cost MUCH more per TB (look up solid state drives). I think a lot of people would recommend 2 drives for a high performance large capacity system. Drive 1 would be a very fast (usually smaller) drive for installing the OS and applications on. The second would then be a storage drive that has enough space to hold all of your files (movies, music, etc). If you really want to add speed and a bit of security, you could even consider using a RAID for the storage system (I like RAID5 myself).
  10. Not to be rude, but if you don't understand the difference between these CPU's, you are missing the fundamentals. Perhaps you could try doing a bit of research into what the terms mean. I highly recommend Tom's Hardware. They have been around FOREVER and have some very informative pages on CPU's, graphics cards, memory, etc. As for your questions... L3 cache - the 3rd layer of cache on a CPU. A bigger number is better.Operating Frequency - the frequency the CPU runs at. This is a factor in how fast the processor is. Bigger is better, but the multiplier and voltage also factor into the actual speed of the processor.Dual/Quad core - the number of cores is basically a measure of how many CPU's you have. Back in the day, you would have multiple CPU's if you wanted more processing power on a server. Today, there are OS's and enough applications that can take advantage of multiple processors, so it's generally better to have a larger number of cores. HOWEVER, if you aren't going to use any applications that can use 2 or more CPU's, you will be wasting your money (to some degree).Sounds like you need to do a bit more reading, but that should get you started.
  11. If you updated GameEx, you may need to email Tom about a new registration code. There was a change in early 2009 (or there abouts) that requires an update.

    Music Randomizer

Tempest wrote an app recently that might help with this.
  13. Although I have never made video snaps, there have been a number of similar threads to your request. For better details, you will want to search the forum. I can say that most recommendations seem to include FRAPS. Perhaps someone else will chime in to provide more details if you can't find a suitable thread.
  14. I'm not sure how many people use this feature. Most people, at this point anyway, tend to use emumovies for videos, snaps, etc. Much of their stuff is available for free. Some is available for subscribed users only. Either way, you can get a lot of useful stuff that might save you some time in not making your own. Good luck!
  15. One way would be to copy one of the databases for a console. Delete all data from that one, then input the games and info you have/want to see. Create an emulator and use .lnk files as the "rom" and then turn on database support. As long as the .lnk name is the same as what you have in the database, it should populate all data you enter.
  16. Currently, GameEx can only display one image of a type for each game. Supporting multiple images in a way similar to what you have suggested has been requested in the past. I'm not sure if it's still in the features request thread, but you might consider checking. If it's not there anymore, it's definitely worth asking again!

    trackball issue

There might be someone here that can help, but you would probably find the BYOAC forum or maybe even KLOV a bit more useful. This forum, while we try to help all related issues, it primarily focused on the front end (GameEx) and setting up software (and hardware in some cases) to work with it.
  18. This won't be a problem for current installs from what Tom has said. For new installs, it will default to the new location.
  19. A DeLorean with turbo? SWEEEEEET!
  20. WOW!!!!! Sweet! Only thing I don't understand is how it already got to October.
  21. I think you have to use the Advanced Config Tool and it's on the second page.
  22. If you set up MAME as an emulator, you can use a database to get it to list the "clean" name. GameEx does create an "Arcade.mdb" database as far as I remember.
  23. If Zinc is in a new location, you may need to edit the ini file for zinc itself.
  24. Yeah, but you can hold down the joystick and it will go faster. BUT, with only 26 letters, it doesn't take that long to find a game anyway. I typically use the alpha paging to get to the right letter, then use standard paging to get to the right screen, then use scroll to the right game. It's definitely not as quick as just typing the name of the game, but it's not too bad considering it's an MAME cabinet!
  25. Probably has to do with drivers. You might need to start the ELO drivers as well as running explorer.exe.
