  1. Just a thought, but perhaps one of you guys that's having a problem with this could upload a zipped copy of your gameex.ini file so Tom could see your actual filters and such. It might help him narrow down the problem.
  2. Actually, hitting escape (or whatever button normally exits games) makes a lot of sense to me for exitting screensaver. I always try to hit the start button and it exits on me
  3. Hmmm, I may have to give this a try again. My problem is that I was trying to map joystick buttons to other joystick buttons. It didn't work the way I was doing it, but perhaps this will work...
  4. I'm not sure adding a feature to disable the check for the program ending would be a positive. The iterations that Nologic and you have been going through are basically just to make things work seamlessly. If you just want it to work (but look ugly), you don't need all of the scripting here. Changing things to the other method might seem easier, but you would probably still have to have a bit of script to get things working seamlessly anyway. It might be interesting if it were possible to tell GameEx what executable to watch though...
  5. ummm.... Don't know. You could check the update log. But, not every update makes it in there, so your best bet is just to install the new version and see. If anything new breaks, report it here and Tom always seems on top of it!
  6. Yes. You need to create a MAME32 formatted list with all of the roms you want available. Then, put that .ini file in the directory you define in the gameex setup (e.g., c:\emu mame\favorites). When you update your list, it will show up. One caveat though. I think this only works for MAME roms, not the rest of your games.
  7. Use flat menus and everything is on the start page.
  8. Especially with the drop in price of the AMD chips this week, I am definitely upgrading the main system. I just have to decide if I want to drop the money for a PCI-E video card or if a 6150 is good enough (for instance).

    Xpadder

Did you read the thread? In short...Not now, but yes in an upcoming version.
  10. It's a tradeoff that's been discussed in detail many-a-time. The advantages and disadvantages are to some degree a personal preference with TV vs. arcade monitor vs. computer monitor (and now vs. lcd display). I have a TV in my finished cabinet and it works fine, but of course setting things up is a bit blury in windows. An LCD could be slow refresh and thus look poor. decisions, decisions...
  11. How about a suggestion... I've been toying with the idea of using a laptop for a cab as well. Here's what I was thinking though. Since the laptop already has a nice high res screen, why not remove the screen from the hinges and mount it AS the monitor. That way you get the small size of the laptop and don't waste the nice screen that came with it. You could get one that has a 13" display that matches your specs and it would be easy to mount and light! One other advantage about lcd's is that they are flat, so if you want to make a bezel, it would be super easy. If you just want to mount it flush with the glass, you could use a piece of foam core or poster board without needing to do anything fancy! Anyway, that's what I would do if I had a spare older laptop sitting around (I wish).
  12. If you're asking me, I don't have an x-arcade stick of any kind. I use a GP-Wiz32 and haven't had any problems...with this
  13. It shows the background for a split second or for a few seconds? Either way, you may have to do something to hide the desktop icons and taskbar so that when it does pause it's not ugly.
  14. Interesting. So if I wanted to, my 3000+ might run it ok? It doesn't really matter since I have my dreamcast hooked up in the same room anyway, but that's still pretty cool!
  15. I wouldn't expect anything built today to be able to playably emulate the PS2 system. I am actually surprised that the DC is emulated at a playable level (is it?). I am leaning more toward PC ports for arcade drivers for this cab anyway, so anything more recent than say N64 or maybe Playstation isn't really a concern.

    Question

2 Choices. 1) Either logoff IM or set yourself to busy/away so that it doesn't warn you about incoming messages when you are gaming. 2) Accept that GameEx will minimize when you get an IM and you will have to click the GameEx item on the TaskBar. GameEx (and any emulator that I can think of) is unlikely to play nice with IM.
  17. There was a topic about this a while back, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, I'm perplexed trying to decide the which way to go here. I'm hoping a for a little discussion on hardware so I can get some feedback and different opinions. To start with, my primary pc is running an Athlon XP 3200+ with 1.5Gb of memory. I am building a new driving cab that currently has no pc yet. I am trying to decide whether I should buy a new MB, CPU, RAM and maybe video card for the cab, or take the oportunity to upgrade my main system. The cost of AMD cpu's is dropping as of today and Intel should drop on 4/22. I think a 3000+ AMD or 3.0GHz Intel would work just fine for pretty much everything I need, so I could just take what I have and throw it in the new cab. Then upgrade to ~4600+ X2 AM2 chip, MB, ram. But, the cost of the components isn't the only driving factor... Since the cab will only be on when I am using it (a few hours a week) and the main pc will be on 24/7, power consumption of the newer cpu's is a concern. The Athlon runs at up to 65watts, but I don't know what the 3200+ I have currently uses, so I don't really have a comparison. Of course, the new CPU's can clock down more effectively. I haven't really played a game on my main pc for quite some time, so it really doesn't need an upgrade, but buying old technology seems wrong when I could use the oportunity to upgrade! Also, I have a few video cards laying around, but I think any current onboard card would be superior to them. What level of card is TRUELY required for GameEx (and emulated or pc driving games) to run properly? I've used a GeForce TI200 and it was a bit choppy. I've used a dieing Radeon 9250 that seemed to work when it wasn't freezing up. I currently use a Radeon X1300pro and it works fine. Anyway, thanks in advance!

    Question

I think you'll need to provide a bit more info for anyone to be able to properly help. What kind of "alarm clock"? Are you saying Outlook pops up a message?
  19. What kind of system are you using? It's possible that either MAME or GameEx have been updated with new features that slow down your system enough that it's no longer fast enough. Galaga isn't exactly 3d graphics, but that would be my first guess based on the limited info you have given.
  20. As far as I recall, the /F is force. Without that line, it may take some time for xpadder to close gracefully. Since we don't care if it ends gracefully or not (saves data, etc), /F is appropriate to avoid lengthy delays.
  21. I haven't personally run into any problems with the Theme Editor. Does it crash on load, when you load the theme in the editor, or when you load it in GameEx? The difference is where the problem is and who would be able to help solve it. If the Theme Editor crashes, then HeadKaze would probably need to help. If it's when you load the theme in to edit it, it could be a corrupt theme or a setting or something. Probably still a HeadKaze question. But, if it crashes in GameEx, that could be a badly formated or corrupt theme, an incompatibility with GameEx and the theme, or something else. In that case, it could be either HK or Tom. Perhaps if you describe that problem in a little more depth, one of those guys can help.
  22. If you come up with a solution that works well enough, please share with the community! I know I have seen half a dozen or so requests for this feature, but it isn't currently possible in GameEx natively. I would REALLY like to be able to do this, but my efforts failed.

    control panel

I know it was requested prior to 7.50 (I don't know when it was originally requested though). The Theme Editor already has this functionality built in, but it has yet to be enabled in GameEx. Someday
  24. If the theme doesn't match exactly what you want it to, you could always just create your own. The easiest way is to take one that is close and modify it. Granted, I have only dabbled a little with the Theme Editor, but it does seem to work pretty well! One of these days I will actually make the one I keep envisioning (when I get off my lazy butt ), which will be more or less a combination of a few themes. Basically, I'll step on the shoulders of giants
  25. I thought these were both pretty much the same under the hood? Don't they both use a keyboard emulator to map button presses to MAME keys (by default)? If so, then I don't understand the way you have asked the question. Are you trying to figure out which is better as far as the joystick itself or interfacing with GameEx and emulators?
