You can see the donation page, but some people don't stop to look, they just download it and they're gone.

If it bothers you that much just donate.

Hab,

Donate to the man - a lot of time and effort has been put into this program, do not assume that anything is free - and make him still want to support it then donate - hell its not that much money anyway and you get something good out of it also.

If you donate, you will receive a key that disables the nag screen. I highly recommend donating. He's really not asking for a lot, and it gives him motivation to keep working on and improving GameEx.

i just had an idea which might make the nag screen both more successful (in getting donations), and less annoying - how about only showing it on some startups (perahaps randomly, about 1 in 3 to 1 in 10?) . things that aren't always there are a less easy to mentally block out, and the other times GameEx would start faster.

Hab, please have some comprehension not only for the costs involved in hosting, and the time it takes to develop GameEx, but also the huge amount of time involved in getting it to work on everyone's pc, ANdD also the time taking supporting. This topic alone has taken at least 20 minutes of time Today.

Ill never get rich asking for $15. Which actually amounts to me then less then £9 pounds, but as djrobx it keeps me somewhat motivated to keep going, at least for the moment.

Come on get realistic Hab.

EDIT: And no, previously the donations link was not enough, got next to nothing, apart from a few keen grown up enthusiasts (which I cannot thank enough).

15 for me equates to over $35AUD.

its a big donation. I sell PHP scripts that I write and ask for an donation ammount I found that much more profitable than asking a speciic price, I have no problem with the nag screen though

Have you ever thought of creating a Cafepress store and selling shirts, mouse pads, and coffee cups? I wouldn't mind a GameEx mouse pad.

 Hi Tom,

Strange, I always thought you were Italian. But with your last name i should have known better!

Anyway, if people are more or less forced to pay a small amount for something which used to be free, they start wining. Me included (I am Dutch ...). At first I thought: what the heck..., then, after a few moments of good tinking, it was clear to me that you are offering a really great piece of software, and for (almost) free. And that this fact has to be rewarded is so obvious, that a nag screen should not be needed.

So, stop wining people, and pay the men for his tremendous effort and great application. I will now!

First I will say , the Programm is worth the money and Great Work. But we all spend our Time for testing each new version , didn´t we?

But I think you should remove this nag screen.

You call it freeware , but with this nagscreen it isn´t real freeware anymore. It´s like Donationsware. So think it over and as you know Americans first shoot and then ask.

I´m not american but I want you to keep this in mind , that you´re dealing with something , that isn´t real freeware anymore.

I just won´t get missunderstood and my Opinion is that the Programm is worth the money and I would spend for it. But others could think different ways , so it will be good to remove this screen.

And let´s us all working together

cheers

Ok, if you are going to do this I aggree dont call it freeware. A 15.00 dollar fee is a bit hefty to remove the nag screen, why not just sale the program if you are going to do that. The fun and respect definately droped, I love the program, and it looks great, but 15 bucks is too big for a kid who is just wanting a nice frontend to put in his cab...

ps: damn good program though, please dont mis understand

I've read through this thread and in the end, can't truly believe that we're having the conversation. Tom has done an excellent job creating a front end application and should be rewarded for all the effort he has put into creating and supporting it through this site. I've paid. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner.

Again, great job Tom and keep up the good work!

We all know Tom deserves the money, the fact and the point is either its freeware or it isnt. Freeware is free and has no banners adds, or anything of that sort. Freeware means you cant pay money for a better version or unlock anypart of the program. This program is no long considered freeware from the technical stand point. Tom great work, you really have outdone yourself with this program. Although either GameEx is freeware or not, theres nothing between.

Just to stop the chinese whispers for a second:

I dont ever remember saying GameEx was 'freeware'. I dont like branding stuff, that must have been said elsewhere. I might have said it was free though. Which I believe technically it is.

OK. There's nothing to stop you guys using another front end, please post alternatives here if you like, but at this present moment in time, you wont find another front end, with these things, or as good as (so I am told).

Quality of web space

The list goes on (really id does :), but to be honest I would rather GameEx sell itself, thats the kind of Software developer I am. I believe quality should speak for itself. I mean how many copies did Atari 2600 Pac Man sell. Was it shit, oh yes it was!

Donating really is still optional you know, if you really cant afford $15, ie are unemployed, under 16, or destitute then just have the nag screen. If your the last, Ill probably give you a free unlock. If you dont agree, your comments are welcome, but remember there other front ends out there, if your taking the time to whine, I am guessiung you prefer GameEx.

I believe choice and freedom of speech is important. Be constuctive if you can though.

AND the final point is:

You are donating for my time (which costs) and costs involved in hosting etc, NOT GameEx. As it says on the donation page, I regularly PAY other coders to implement things in GameEx. It was not Free before, it was expensive, to ME.

Believe it or not, if you have an intelligent think about all this, me doing this now the way I have is a very positive thing for the future of the project, and the overall cost to me and YOU.

it disapoints me alot to read "some" of the comments here i would say yes you have a "nag" screen there last for 10-15 secs. But you have a fully functional program with none of features disabled ...

i have been here in the earlier stages and seen how much time tom have put in this and as well how much this Front-end have grown from a basic frontend to a outstanding one my oppion in to top 3 of all frontends...

even so tom still uses time to hear all out trying to make it even better ...

now some wanna have a 15 sec. nag screen removed why ??

it really dosent matter what you call this program we all know what it does and what to do if you wanna support Tom ....

i myself know how things like this are time consuming im not a coder though im a gfx artist you can find my work on serveral webpages "pleasure-dome" , "rWa" and done skins/thems for many programs and wallpapers...

both things takes alot of time and thinking things there takes other people 20 secs. to download but takes Us countless of hours ....

I don't agree. Most of the kids I know regularly blow lots of money on fancy clothes, iPods, PSPs, movies, etc. If a kid can afford to buy his own cab, surely he or she can scrounge up another $15 to give to Tom for the excellent work he's done on his software that finishes off the project with class.

If you work at the federal US minimum wage, you'll have to work less than 3 hours to come up with $15.

and i can say for sure Tom used alot more hours than that :P:P:P

I'm always amazed at the staggeringly different views lots of people have on paying for hardware vs. paying for software. When a new $400 video card comes out people are like, "damn I need that" and will happily pay for it, but when the $50 dollar game comes out that really makes the card purchase worth while most of those same people say that its too expensive and pirate/download it.

I remember checking the torrent sites when Doom 3 came out and something insane like 20,000 people were downloading it and I would wager quite a few of them were doing it on $3000+ machines.

I'm not calling anybody out or anything, I'm just agreeing that good software should be given the same respect as good hardware.
