No the functionalitliy has always been there and still is.

Under Display settings, change the Background setting to Use Backgrounds and not use Game Images as backgrounds. I bet your kicking yourself now :D

Well like all tools and software.... users only use like 20% of the functionality. I thought I had looked and read through all the switches for game ex. But you do have so much flexibility. Thanks for all the coding! Please release your source code someday! ;-P

Is there an option to at least have the screensaver not have sound if music is on and to  leave the music on?

It already does that. Its under Audio settings I think.

I see someone else requested this awhile back but I'd like to be able to just jump in from the attract mode and play (i know there's a "last played" portion in the menu, but it kind of takes you out of the arcade "world" in order to do that.. maybe have gameex just ignore keys 5-8 as valid ways to exit the attract mode?) Not a big deal, just a minor request. :P

When you select a game and you get to the page where all the game info is (cabinet, flyer etc) the gamedescription is "selectable" (i.e. it's "focused" when you go from "add to favourites" to "Recommended games"). Is it possible for GameEx's navigation to "skip" that step? This way, if there's a lot of info about a game, and you want to see the recommended games, you don't have to step through all the info first.

However, while typing this, I realize that stepping through gameinfo is a useful feature when you actually want to read it. So how about putting a link directly under "add to favourites" that takes you directly to "recommended games"

I hope this makes sense, otherwise just have a look at my attachment.

Keep up the great work.

Btw, when can we expect to see full gui control custimization?

I mentioned this before, but now that there's an "official" thread, I'll post it again.

It might be nice to have a random game feature. I got so many games that I don't have the time/patience to scroll through the whole list to see what I'm missing. Hitting Random Game would at least let me see some the games I'm missing.

I was thinking along the lines of a Item on the Start Page which will select AND launch a random game across MAME and all emulators.

And this Random Game feature could be enabled/disabled from the Game Prefs.

Jim

Hi,

Random game is coming!

I also find the attractmode-Coin-in very good. Is this possible?

Cupid

Hi,

I do like the attractmode-Coin-in idea very much too. I am going to try to implement this.

Hiya all,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback. I can see practically everyone wants to help me build a better GameEx.

Some of these (but not all (please undersrtand)) will deffinitly get implemented into the software. Some if not already, very imminently.

Thanks again. Keep 'em coming :)

I like the picture slideshow feature... my HTPC uses SageTV and I have a bear of a time getting it to read pics over a network mapped drive from my desktop. I installed GameEX for MAME and NES/SNES emuls (I love it BTW!) and was happy to see it's slideshow feature worked well.

Would it be possible to add a little functionality to this... primarily the option of an infinite delay time with forward and back buttons mapped to the gamepad. I like to step through pics at my own pace and to be able to go back.

Thanks, I'm just getting into GameEX and it's great!

It would be awesome if we had control over the jukebox playlists. Just the ability to view and pick which song from your playlist you want to hear instead of skipping through every track before it and not knowing how many tracks there are to go. I was thinking about using a jukebox software, but if it had this feature, I would not even think twice.

Thanks for listening.

I think GameEx already does this during install, at least it should be. It backs up your old INI file and then adds the missing (new) settings. I think is probably what you would call an implanter.

Automatic ini-updating works for me... I have no problem with the updates on all my computers.

yes i tryed it today works fine i just didnt dare to just copy my old "ini" over the new one and mby lose some settings but i looked after and saw it did update the new commands in it as TSpeirs so nicely explained :)

i just have been a little to paranoid and did the ini update by myself :P

I love the video display backgrounds (daphnebak.mpg, bak.mpg, emubak.mpg) when displaying games. What about the ability the to have different backgrounds for different emus, a 2600bak.mpg for 2600 games example? As a default gameex would play the video file first if it was there and if the video file was named the same as the logo name but with the bak added, it would play these as backgrounds during the game selection. Not so much that you would have to include these files in the download but that the user could configure these themselves.

I am not a programmer so I don't know how hard this would be....but you did say bring it on :):P

Hi. First of all great work - especially the last few builds.

I have two suggestions:

1. As someone else said, allow us to reconfigure the keys that GameEx uses for its functions. I too have a single player cab with a limitted number of buttons and in certain situations, it is simply impossible to navigate backwards with this kind of configuration.

2. Release the source.

Cheers,

Ant.

I have always been against source code releasing becouse it will only be even more messy like 20 sites doing differents addons to it. And make it impossible to keep track

i would say the only way would either be to working togther if Tom feels that have reached a stage where he cant keep up himself or loose interest in the project ...

my 2 cents anyway :)

Interesting point of view. I look at it this way: Who cares if 20 spin offs are generated if just one person contributes to the improvement the main project? That is still an improvement on the current model. Anyway, if you look at the way open source software develops, there aren't usually many spinoffs - it takes a lot more time to manage an entire spinoff project than it does to make a single contribution to an existing project. A good example of this is MediaPortal (which bares a startling resemblence to GameEx but doesn't have any of the MAME-specific features) - there are a LOT of people contributing to that project and everyone reaps the benefit.

Cheers,

Ant.

One feature I would like *really* badly is the ability to selectively enable Map Keys for the ESC key and MCE Remote "back" key separately.

I normally use the MCE remote to exit a game. It's nice to have a uniform way to do this. A LOT of games and emulators want to use the ESC key for various tasks, but I absolutely hate to give up the ability to exit games with the remote so the ESC key is usable. It would be very helpful for these sorts of games. It would be nice even for emulators, since the UIs often need ESC (in Zsnes, for example, that's how you bring up the menu)

** EDIT **

While it would still be nice to have this built into GameEx I ended up just writing my own remote monitoring and key mapping app in C++. I let GameEx run my monitor without keymapping and it all seems to work. Now I have save states on my MCE remote as well as the ability to get out of games that use the ESC key! Hoorah!

Another feature request:

Game list caching for the rom lists in the emulators section. I want to keep only one copy of the emulator ROMs on a network share. While it works great locally, it takes GameEx a very long time (up to 5 seconds every time you move in and out of the ROM list in the NES section) to cue up the list of ROMs over the network.

The MAME games already work great because it keeps a local copy of that list. Maybe it could be an option, and if enabled, it updates the emulator ROM list when doing the MAME Roms or something?

I have the same problem (slow list loads because of network), while your idea is much more automatic (and I would perfer this), you can make a .map file using Excel and ASAP Utilities' Import File function. I haven't got around to actually doing it, but you can import a list of the files in the directory, then I copy another column and Replace ".zip" with "" (nothing) to make my name colum, then export the whole thing to txt. A little messy, but a doable solution.
