random question.... can anyone tell me why pong isn't selectable from the mame games? I know I have the friggin rom, lol!

I had a friend over after I finished building my cabinet last year, and I am all proud of myself after getting every emu I can find under the sun running with complete romsets. So I say, 'pick any game you want". and what do you know, my friend picks pong, so i scroll down and I look like an idiot because it's definitely not there, lol.

I think we ended up playing an atari version instead.

Does it require a specific screen resolution or something?

pong is not in MAME, because it runs on whats called discrete logistics which isnt emulated yet back in the day..it was added to MAME v0.36b10 by mistake, this simulation remained present untill MAME v0.36b16 and was later removed in MAME v0.36RC1. Other games using discrete logisticsâ?¦.http://www.mameworld.net/discrete/

Other unoffical builds let you play pong tho

Pong used to be a rom, but was removed a while back because (as Brian said), it was not emulating the game, it was emulating the results of the discrete electronics. That is not the intent of MAME, so it had to go. If you REALLY want it, I'm sure there is a way to get classic pong on your machine by searching google...

well, I don't want to have to create an entire entry just for pong - I'd just like to have it listed with the rest of my arcade games. I have that old rom your talking about, but mame doesn't list it. I suppose a hacked version of mame might, but considering I updated my mame every few months, i don't feel like trying to find updated hacks every few months.

Although it might be funny to have a list of 24+ emulated consoles and then at the bottom is just PONG in all it's glory..lol. If thats the case then I'd have to go compile every version of pong (from pong to pong kombat) and give it it's own little shrine or something.... but seriously, the day I'm that bored will be sad indeed.

Pong was cool! But after playing once, it becomes apparent why there isn't a big movement to get it back in MAME :P (just my opinion though). I wonder if it's possible to have MAME grouped with any other emulator? If so, you could set up pong in an older version of MAME that it actually works in and group it with the regular MAME list. Probably won't work, but just a thought.

I can't imagine most people spending more than about 30 seconds playing pong to impress their friends with nostalgia. It's kinda boring. As to the reason it isn't supported by MAME, like bkenobi said it wasn't being 100% accurately emulated. MAME's mission statement is to document and accurately emulate arcade hardware. Therefore, 90% isn't good enough. This is the reason some games experience slow down...if the original hardware couldn't handle the game and chugged along occasionally, well MAME will too--intentionally.

I remember going to Radio Shack to play the home version of Pong in the mid-70s. Oh the memories.

you think pong is a way to impress your friends?

Thanks for the elaborate explanation of Mame  - I don't see how it has anything to do with this topic. I was simply asking why pong wasn't present - and bkenobi explained it just fine.

Since your so quick to throw your personal opinion into the mix, I personally find pong to be quite fun and play it on my dos emulator for more than 30 seconds quite often. Using your "fun" theory, 90 percent of the games in mame don't belong in there. A quick look at the games list shows why arcadees failed, they were full of cheap games with hardly any innovation - clone after clone of the games which were actually fun.

I bought mine at Radio Shack in the late 70's... :D It had two controls. One was on the base unit that allowed you to select the games etc, and the other was much smaller and was detachable from the base unit. Had that until we got an Intellivision.

There is another thread that's active right now that talks about MAMEPlus! Apparently, one of it's features is that it plays other systems that are not included in the core MAME build (HazeMD for one). Apparently, it also plays some unofficial roms that MAME doesn't. One of these is Pong! I haven't tried it yet, but I will be soon since it seems to have some other nice features.

Wow. Doesn't take much to offend you.

bkenobi said he didn't think Pong was that much fun either, but you didn't roll your eyes at him. No, I don't think, except for nostalgia purposes, that Pong is that fun. Yes, that is opinion. There are lots of opinions on here, and the ones I don't agree with don't ruin my day. Lighten up!

And regarding my "elaborate" 3 line explanation: I apologize for answering your question! My bad! It will never happen again!

Yeah Ben, PlasmaPong is pretty sweet. The increasing beat music is a nice touch.
