I don't understand this but for some reason, GameEx is crashing one of my computers. It gives no errors and just freezes (Like the old days of Win98). Just freezes and I need to reset it. I ran some diagnostics of the system itself and found no problems whatsoever. I also tried a reinstall and the problem persists. Anyone else having this problem?

Over Heating? Bad Memory Module?

None of those. The problem is I don't get any info. Normally GameEx gives you an error report but instead, the PC crashes. I tested the computer first since I assumed it was a hardware/OS issue but it all checked out. The computer only crashes when I have GameEx running.

What exactly happens when it crashes? BSOD? Screen freeze? Can you Alt+Tab out? Maybe multiple instances of GE is running causing your comp. to crash.

This is happening to me too.

I only installed GamEx for the first time last night... (I'm running Win98SE on a PIII600 with 512MB Ram and a 32MB TNT card for the purpose of a Mame cabinet). At first I couldnt even load it as it bombed out saying a font wasnt found... so I looked it up and downloaded the core font pack and I can now load Gamex to the main menu.

The problem occurs when I pick anything from that main menu that launches something (eg Mame or some media) and the PC hangs there and then... the screen doesnt change, alt+tab doesnt do anything, and I have to hard-off the PC.

I'm new to this forum and came across this thread as it may be related... if anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Thanks!

Can you post your log files please (all of it).

Start > Programs > GameEx > Log File.

Tom,

I still don't know what was causing it.. I think it may actually have been MediaPlayer. I got frustrated and did a reformat/clean OS install and haven't had the problem since.

I wish I could have pinned down the problem but it looks like it was more a Windows problem than a GameEx problem. I only use that PC for media files so that explains it as far as I can tell.

Sorry but I'm gonna add a "me too" to this thread. I have been away for about four months and downloaded the latest version yesterday. I have had no success in two days at getting gamex running. My logfile looks like the one above. i.e. no error is reported but the system is locked solid. The only way out is a reset and the same thing happens all over again. Even on the most basic settings I have had no success.

In addition, I cannot get any video working in Gamex and if I do attempt to set it up in either the advanced setup or the wizard then Gamex starts with a black screen, soundtrack is heard but there is no further response from Gamex. Task manager says Gamex is not responding and ctrl-alt-delete is the only answer.

At a guess this is video card or codec related but I've used the same codec pack with Gamex previously over an extended period of time (Gamex versions from about 3.xx to 6.xx). New Video card in the interim is 8800GTS and I know that it's most likely the cause of my video problem but that doesn't explain the hanging when scrolling through the game list.

If everyone else is having fun and their systems and software are working, I'm very happy for them. I only mention any of this because clearly there are a few other people having similar problems and if they're not as patient as I am they will have already given up. There is a problem here and I wish I could be more helpful in trouble shooting it but if there is no problem reported in the logfile I'm not sure what else I can do to help.

I think your system may be too underpowered for GameEx. It does not meet the minimum requirements. You may be better with MAMEWAH, gamelauncher or a nottso graphic extensive front end.

Other than upgrade your system and OS things to try are as follows.

1. Get the latest version.

2. Turn on 16-Bit Colour.

3. Turn off advanced graphics.

4. Run at a lower resolution.

Thanks, I don't know what to do. It seems to load fine, and will stay fine until I move the pointer to ANY menu item. Then the pc freezes and I must hit the reset button.

Posted
J, can you please try a different theme just to rule that out.

Thanks.

I already had done that, trying the default with the same results. I'm now going to try not using start page zoom animation, since it doesn't lock up until I point at a menu bar item.

Is it ok just using the keyboard?

Also, are you talking about a menu item, ie on the left of the screen, or an item in the gamelist?

nope, when I used the keyboard to move down from the MAME bar, it locked up again. As a note my pc speakers make a loud high pitched sound that loops when this locks up.This is a fresh install of GameEx(since I thought maybe my original was corrupt.)

Can you post your gameex.ini so I can try and duplicate the issue. I assume your talking about the menu bar on the left and when in MAME, yes?

Can you try a completely fresh install, in other words in a different install location other than C:\program files\gameex. Once we figure it out we can put it back.

Also, did you change anything else on your sysyem, new hardware new drivers or anything (new graphics drivers??). The way its crashing sounds like it might be something to do with that.

Also please try the attached GameEx.exe (replace the existing). Im pretty sure it will work, as I think I figured it where its failing for you with something introduced last few versions. However this would indicate a graphics card hardware/driver issue.

Cheers.

Thanks so much for such quick responses. I made no driver updates or hardware changes. I did do some windows updates.(critical ones only) I will try what you've suggested here and let you knowthe results. :)

You were right Tom. It's working great now.

Now, I noticed a video driver upgrade for my card (ATI X850) that was put out on Feb 21, 2007. Since I now have a working and non-working versions of GameEx installed I'm thinking I should try the driver update and see if that fixes the non-working version of GameEx.
