[RESOLVED] Problem exiting tables

keithhov

Recommended Posts

System crashes when I try to exit a table in vpinballx.....this only happens when I run visual pinball in a different resolution as windows.   There are some newer game that I have use lower the resolution and select force fullscreen mode in vpinball, when I exit a  black screen shows and I can see part of the loading screen and I have to reboot the entire pc.

I think the actual problem is the loading screen doesn't fully close after a table crashes.  The loading screen comes up normally when I chose a table, but right before the table launches the loading screen changes resolution and the loading screen gets larger.

Photo of what shows when I exit a table and files attatched.

Thanks

Maybe stupid question, but why are you running pinvol.exe everytime you launch a table ?
I thought that pinvol can be launched just once and it will just grab the settings of that specific table

Which revision of Vpinball 10.8 are you running ? (10.8 is still beta and can be caused by that)

Try to add -minimized to your launch parameters and remove the - sign before the filename zo like this :

-play "[TABLEPATH]\[TABLEFILE]"  -Minimized

Not sure if your VPX is runing in Full screen exclusive mode,, if so, set the rxclusive hack to yes in your system :

If you don't run full exclusive mode, within VPX, try setting this and set the hack to yes as well
Hope this helps

I forgot i had pinvol in there,  it already launches with windows.. I took it out but didnt help.

It happens with 10.7 as well unfortunately.  I tried a fresh install on 2 different computers,I tried all options with the exclusive mode in vpx and pinballx, no luck unfortunately.

I will try your parameters..

Thanks.

odd, I don't have any issues with any version of VPX.
So, is Vpinball closing or is it open in the back ground ?
I see you are running PinballX as Admin (thanks @Tom Speirs for adding this).
this is not needed.
PinballX and Visual Pinball should NOT be run with admin. just run both exes as normal users

EDIT: You also run JoyToKey.exe, why should you do that ? PinballX and VP both work with joysticks and all joysticks buttons can be assigned

ive run them both in admin for years.....I  have had problems exiting tables if admin isnt checked.   I use joytokey to make it easier to change volume with pinvol.

you might be right though.. i unchecked admin for both and it might have helped... kinda hard to test.  I dont have the computer hooked up to cabinet yet, but I will confirm if that actually fixed the problem

A couple of years ago, we ( @scutters and myself, not others) recommended to run PinballX as Admin.
But at a sudden moment, it wasn't necessary anymore.
I though I marked it in the documentation as well.
I run W11 as well, and have UAC enabled (gives a popup when need in higher privilege mode), but I can run everything without running in higher privilege mode, so my cab is running in a better security mode now

I still have the issue, with or without admin.....it seems when vpx changes resolution when the loading screen is up, the loading screen doesn't close, if you cycle through open windows the loading screen is still there and when you try to exit a table it hangs.

It also might be tied to an issue with screen set up but I can't really test currently.   Tomorrow I will set everything up with 3 screens, but I  have a feeling the issue will persist.

I tested this on a pc i dont use much,  it had version 5.42 on it.....i had no problem exiting tables when vpx was using exclusive fullscreen mode.......when i updated it to most current version, crashing again occurred exiting a table on pinballx if exclusive full screen mode was enabled.

I have both……tested on both with the same result,  I think I only have 64 bit versions.

I will do the full install with 3 screen set up soon and just hope it works, if it doesn’t I will stick with and older version for now.

I am assuming many don’t use the force full screen option in vpx but even with a new computer and powerful video card i can’t get 120 frames at 4k with some of the recent tables unless I lower the res.

Sounds like the issue is caused by running VPX at a different resolution than windows (i assume windows is 4k and VPX is 2k or similar), if you set VPX to run at the same resolution as windows does everything work with PinballX (just with bad FPS in game)?

To be honest i'd have thought a GTX4060 would be ok for even the heavier tables to run 4k 120hz, at least most of the time. Can you post a screen shot of your VPX video preferences screen?

I’ll mess with windows resolution Tomorow and test ,.., I can run hundreds of tables at 4k/120 fps even with and older card , but some of the latest from vpin workshop have no chance at 60 fps even with a 4060 card (thats what I have) in 4k.

I can’t tell the difference in image quality when I go down to 2k basically but they stay at a steady 120 fps .

How do you change the resolution?

Differrent pinballx ini file ? Or running a script that changes windows resolution ?

And you said it iscausing issues woth 10.7 as well, how do you change the resolution ? Or is vpinball always set lower than windows resolution ?

I run in 2k at 165 hz without issues on my 3080

Yes it happens on 10.7 as well, I am changing the res in vpx settings,  for years I have run vpx in 4k and run windows in 4k with no issues.
I’m assuming if I set windows to 2k and vpx to 2k there would not be an issue , I will try later today and test

That's my guess too, and if you're happy running at 2k shouldn't be a problem other than having to change any relative screen position offsets (pup pack positions, B2S etc, but if you're already running VPX at 2k then you may already have done that)

I did wonder if lowering the max texture dimensions or another setting in VPX video prefs may have allowed you to stick with 4k though.

We can have a rethink if running VPX and PinballX/Windows at the same resolution still has issues, no idea at the moment what would cause that, so if that's the case please attach fresh copies of the log.txt and pinballx.ini files.

I did set windows to 2k and vpx to 2k and that did not result any crashes, but I would like run 10.7 in 4k and 10.8 in 2k,  I am thinking if i set windows to 2k and 10.7 vpx to 4k I will have an issue exiting 10.7 tables in pinballx.

I can't test right now until i get my 3 screen cab set back up, once it set up correctly, I will post the files if I still get crashes exiting.

Turns out I have an exit table button issue more then a resolution issue.   Whatever button I had to exit tables was closing VPX instead of exiting pinballx but only when vpx was in "force fullscreen" mode.

I have always had minor problems exiting tables with pinballx and would usually use joytokey as a quick fix.

Currently not using joy to key.....I can exit a some tables no problem but others don't exit, even though they are using the same version of vpx, it really makes no sense.

Currently have exit and quit mapped as the same button on controller and keyboard.......lord of the rings exits normally,,,, big bang bar nothing happens when i try to exit....so confused......files attached.

I am not running vpx or pinball as admin based on your feedback... lotr might have not have been closed by pinballx but when it hit the exit button it goes back to wheel for whatever reason....

finding out that I am not able to exit games in pinballx...any version when excluvise fullscreen is enabled in vpx.

Wouldn't be a big deal but I have a handful of tables that I need to lower the resolution on,,, basically any of the newer tables that are resource heavy.

Same thing.... cant exit with anything.... have to ctrl alt del and reboot,,,extra frustrating because it changes the mouse cursor to one pixel and you have to go into control panel after computer reboots....

On windows11,, i think it tried on win10 but it was similar....I have tried every possible setting in vpx and pinballx.

But it comes down to can't exit tables when exclusive fullscreen is enabled in vpx and vpx resolution is set something different then windows resolution.

Thanks for the help.

I have tried that setting as well...I will post the log with that checked...

oddly I am still testing and changed windows scale to what it "recommends" and for now some reason the first time I select a table and play I can exit back to the wheel, but when I go back to the same table I can't exit and have to reboot.
