[RESOLVED] PinballX randomly crashes back to desktop

Recommended Posts

Posted

What the title says, i'm running PinballX and while i'm browsing tables or it just sits there, it closes back to the desktop, without any error message or any error line in the log.

Things i tried:

- Reinstalled the program.

- Reinstalled a different version.

- Tried both 32 and 64bit versions.

- Tried running with or without admin rights.

- Removed all media.

- deleted the config file and started fresh.

Nothing worked.

This problem appeared out of nowhere, without me changing any options or anything. If i play a table, there are no crashes, which means VPX is working normally. I only get this crash in the menu, thus it's somethign about PinballX. I was wondering if someone ever had this weird issue and fixed it.

Please attach your pinballx\config\pinballx.ini & pinballx\log\log.txt files (after a crash occurs)

Can you also let us know if there is any pattern to the crashes (same table in the wheel? etc, might be corrupt media for one table)

As i said, the PinballX.ini doesn't matter since it would crash even with a fresh one, right after installing, pure default settings.

Media also isn't an issue since it crashes even when i remove them all, the whole folder, images, sounds, everything. So no media and no pattern.

The Log also doesn't seem to say anything but here it is anyway

Did you try installing to a new folder location or over the top of your current install (and was it the latest version you tried)?

If it was a new install with the latest version to a new location does windows Event Viewer show anything at the time of the crashes (under Windows logs - Application section)?

Ι deleted/backed up the PinballX folder (after i uninstalled the program) and made a fresh one in the same location (C:\PinballX)

Dunno about the rest, i'm gonna have to test again when i get back to my cab.

If the issue recurs, please attach fresh copies of your pinballx.ini and log.txt files - we need both to triage.

Also, knowing if you are using an nlite or other modified version of Windows.

You run a pretty old version according to the logfile.

Can you upgrade and post a new  log again ?

I tried some older and newer version. My original version was also working fine for a few years.

Log file is the same in all versions. There are no errors.

You need to be on the latest version and provide new copies of both requested files for anyone to effectively try to assist you, regardless if showing the same information.

Also, please answer the questions asked about your Windows version and any other direct questions.

I'm using Windows 10 (2004 update)

I'll post the other log file when i get to my cab tomorrow.

I can't use the latest version because it messes up all my options and i have to start all over again.

The version i'm using was working fine in other computers, including mine and i tried some different versions anyway that are close to mine (and don't mess the setup), some a bit older and some a bit newer.

It's just that on the particular computer in my cab, i have this problem. I don't know if it's some kind of conflict with some device so i'm asking to see if any other had something similar happening to them.

It does sound like something strange is happening on your cab with the issues you are having.

Windows event viewer may have more information on the cause so please also check that when you post the other log. Look for anything with a red error indicator at the time of crashes.

You could try unplugging all usb devices and disabling all PinballX plugins (via plugin manager) to see if PinballX seems more stable then. Worth ruling out if there's no extra info in the windows event log.

edit - bit of an afterthought but please also confirm you aren't running pinballx in a windows compatibility mode as well

PinballX , should not mess up your configuration. What is messing up that you need to start over again ?

Did you find anything after crash in your eventlog ?

Do you update security updates as well or is this a version after this installation ?
As Scuters said, I suspect your operation system
Maybe try to run a fix of your OS ?

No, i don't update Windows ever. I just use the one i originally installed. I don't have to update because i don't have the cabinet connected online and i also never do any changes. I just have my 200 favorite tables and play those, i don't ever add new tables, or do any updates. If it works, i leave it as is.

But somehow, PinballX broke now and i can't figure out why. I thought it was the PC's fault, maybe a device got busted or something, but i only have this issue with the PinballX menu, not the tables themselves while playing.

Even offline an OS can turn sour. File corruption happens. Did you look for any failurevor warning notifications in the Windows Event Viewer?

yes i did find some error messaged regarding PinballX

I could only take screenshots with my camera though, so here they are

Can you figure out anything from this?

Looks like your directx 9 is screwed/broken/mail functioning.

Can be a lot of things:

Operating system issues : try sfc /scannow as admin in command prompt and the links I post in previous post. Or upgrade your os

Return to a restore point before issue happen ?

Try a Video driver update.

Directx9 re-install ( not sure if that is possible on w10). Found the next on internet

I've renamed both d3dx9_39.dll files (in both C:\Windows\System32\d3dx9_39.dll and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\d3dx9_39.dll) to something like __d3dx9_39.dll, and re-ran the DirectX9 Runtime Web Installer. Since there's now no file called d3dx9_39.dll, the Web Installer will happily download them from the internet and install them from scratch.

Not sure if it helps, but something definitely is wrong with your pc.

Lsst resort will be to reinstall your cab.

Not a fun job, but I did it a couple of weeks agk and since than, it runs smoother as before

Welp, turned out the problem was RTSS/Afterburner being globally ON, affecting PinballX and causing it to close.

Turned it OFF so it only affects Visual Pinball (it helps a bit with frame pacing i think) and the problem went away.

Thanks for the suggestions. Even viewer helped a lot identifying the issue.
