After windows 10 did its latest update pinballs won’t launch. I’ve updated to the latest version and it launches after the initial install but won’t launch after closing or rebooting

I haven’t had a chance to upload the files yet, we do it in the morning. But I also noticed that attract mode doesn’t seem to be working either even though it is set to start after 1 minute and changed tables after 15 seconds

I'm confused here. I thought you said it did not launch? How could it possibly enter attract mode if it won't launch?

What update of W10 did you install ? 21h1 ? Or the may monthly security update for 20h2 ? Or another update ?

edit : I updated my cab with "May 11, 2021—KB5003173" (I have W10 20h2) and PBC is working fine.
After reboot PBX will still launch and attract mode is also working for me

Did you run the togglestartwithwindows.exe ?

This will turn of or on the auto start pinballx after windows starts.

Otherwise place pinballx.exe shortcut in your startup folder

Lol. To be honest, I'm not sure how Tom starts pbx (maybe via a service). I don't see anything in run key or startup folder

Now attract mode isn’t working properly again. It works fine on a fresh reboot but if I play a game and then exit a game attract mode doesn’t work unless I completely reboot the machine

This morning I installed Windows 10 21H1 (that's the latest version). I restarted my cabinet and PinballX is launching.
Waited a bit and attract mode was starting.
I launched a table, waited a while and exit the table. Came back into PinballX and waited. Atrract mode was still working for me.

I still run PBX v5.12 64 bit.
Maybe post your log file (after issue is happening) and your settings file)

At this point you need to ensure  you have downloaded and installed the latest version of PinballX.

Help us help you by attaching a copy of your pinballx.ini and log.txt file immediately following the issue being reported.

These files should always be provided when reporting a problem and will expedite troubleshooting without a lot if guessing.

I dont see anything strange, beside that you have a 64bit operating system and using the 32bit of PinballX.

Have you tried to use the 64bit version of PBX as well ? (Just run the installer again and make sure you install the 64bit)

I don't see anything wrong either, so as well as trying the 64bit version it may also be worth turning off the 'show high scores' function in Attract mode to see if that has any affect (not sure where pinballx reads that info, statistics.ini or one of the high score txt files, but maybe a file is corrupted somewhere - this would rule that out)

Hmm, ok...  Try a new install into a new folder (pinballx_test or something). Don't copy any media or anything, just a clean install.

If the new install works and goes into attract mode etc then we know it's something with your current setup/config.

If the clean install doesn't work then it may be time to make sure you've not got a dodgy button somewhere or something that pinballx is seeing as user input, preventing attract mode from starting.

Same result with install into a test folder and after disconnecting buttons. It only won’t go back into attract mode after playing a game. If I reboot attract mode starts working again but as soon as I play and exit a game attract mode doesn’t work again. I’ve had the same basic setup for about 5 years and only started having problems after the latest windows 10 update. Pinballx 5.13 took care of all my problems except attract mode

Do we have a log with it not launching? I don't see one and that is the topic.

If attract mode is not starting it is because PinballX thinks a control is pressed. That is the only possible thing it can be. On my cab its tilt that causes this is sometimes.

  • Tom Speirs changed the title to Attract mode only works on first launch.

No worries, I changed the topic title.. Again, the only reason I am aware of where attract mode is cancelled is because of keyboard or gamepad input.

After you get the issue, use notepad and windows virtual keyboard to check for keyboard input. Then check the windows gamepad settings to ensure no buttons or directions are down.

It turns out it was a wireless mouse sending a low battery signal. I don’t know why attract mode would work fine after launch but not after playing but changing the batteries in the mouse fixed it. Thank you for the help!
