Okay, so I don't want the police or organizations or anyone other than a friend using or accessing my personal data and information including using unauthorized photo recognition on my Facebook profile picture.

Your profile Picture has to be publicly available on the internet to the whole world. That is the Facebook rules. It has to be public. Not paranoia because this is very real for all of us.

Knowing and understanding how our data is used and the technology behind it, should I have a real picture of me on Facebook or not? Don't want to seem like a weirdo but this is an issue. What do you think?

PS: When the class action suite eventually comes up against ClearView I encourage you all to join even for the pennies to send a  message. They are currently saying they are protected under US law which is obviously nonsense and some of us are protected under other laws such as GPDR.

I have to use Facebook to communicate with a few people who are computer alliterate. Otherwise I would not care.

We all got to eat and some of us have the skills to make money off abusing others, I am  just not that guy

My picture is on Facebook. It is on my profile and in pictures shared with family and friends.

Even if I did not share any pictures, all it takes is a family member or friend tagging me in a picture to get the recognition ball rolling. Two or more pictures with just a few people in them with me tagged in them is more than enough for a person of average intelligence to string together the tags and identify me.

There's no easy answer to this. Such identifications may become a more required thing in this social distancing "new normal."  Some conspiracy theorists suggest microchips will be next (recall when it was barcodes during the 80s?).

Yeah but what if you've only allowed to be tagged in one photo and the profile picture is the only thing your not allowed to make friends only.

I don't think freedom is going out the window anytime soon but neither are idiots.

If you are doing it as a business page in Facebook, your company logo would be sufficient.

As for personal you could try that as well. No idea if you would find yourself in Facebook jail.

That is actually a brilliant idea for an app! Take a bunch of features, similar to the newer digital criminal composites to create a portrait pic with your choice of background. Call the app DigitalGolem.

Whom is going to know it isn't you unless you actually meet?

Wait, did something change?  I've seen people with pictures of buildings, their car, their cat, and even blacked out as their profile picture..  Why the need to have a photo of you?  I wasn't aware anything had changed on that front.  In fact, my profile picture right now is a picture of me I generated using an app from my workplace that creates a 3D model of a person using the same artwork style as our current advertising campaign.  It looks similar to me, but it's clearly not me.  I was never instructed to change it.

Hey, try not to bug out to hard about technology traps like facial recognition, AI, spyware...governments be doin' their thang! For the most part they're trying to keep the baddies back and make it as painless for there rest of us as possible, but yeah there are some personal freedoms we give up. If/when it becomes too intrusive there will be productive discussions about how far it should be taken. I value privacy too, but that ship sailed long ago.

So sit back and enjoy the view.  Front row seats to the apocalypse, baby!
