So, my gameex copy on a windows XP machine has been running great for many years without issue updating. Recently I cranked it up and received a shut down on error message after updating. Luckily I had an earlier version of gameex and simply installed it to restore it. Posting my log file in hopes for some advise. I realized Windows XP is quite old but it simply works great and the PC specs is pretty dated.

Looks like a direct2d error but not one with which I am familiar. Were there any other updates that took place, such as a video driver or any other software?

No. The only updates I have done over the years have been to Gameex. Up until this one gameex just updates and keep on Chugging.

If you have not tried already, please download the latest version and perform an over the top installation. Although generally safe to do so without, you may want to backup your GameEx path first.

Just tried it with the same results. The file date of the working gameex install is 1-15-2016. Absent getting it to work I will probably let sleeping bears lie. I thought about reloading DirectX but it seems to run ok without updating so.....

This one is a head scratcher. Have you tried reinstalling DirectX for your OS?

Also, try recreating the error and look in Event Viewer for the approximate time of the error to see if any errors show and paste into a txt file to attach on reply.

I am almost afraid to try the directx reinstall because its windows XP. One thing I did try was installing a clean version of the arcade edition. It ran fine (bare) without configuring it. I copied over the folders from my gameex directory to the gamex arcade folder trying to avoid having to reconfigure it. It started with the same error.

I do appreciate you trying to help with this. I'm good with no updating. Someday I may upgrade the PC and a later version of Windows. :)

I am flagging this for Tom's attention as it may be an issue for other XP users.

Which version did you upgrade from? Did you try the default theme or another theme?

Finally got around to trying a different theme and that fixed the issue. I was using the Retro Box theme.....switched to default and the upgrade works. Switched back to the retro box with the upgraded version of Gameex and got the error again so it seems that there is something in the Retro Box theme that does not play well. Not a problem with me as I will use a different theme. Thanks for the help!

Is the Retro Box theme available here in the downloads section?  I went looking for it to point the author to this thread, but don't see that one.

Thanks!

I'm not sure where I got it from but I tried to load it on another machine a while back and I could not find it anywhere. It's been so long I can't remember where it came from. It was my favorite theme though...

Retrobox did not make the move to the new forums/repository format IIRC. But I may be wrong.
