[RESOLVED] GameEx Arcade Crashes upon startup - Fresh install

Recommended Posts

I just installed the GameEx Arcade Edition into c:\GameEx on a fresh Windows 10 machine..  I've attempted to set up all the "extras" folders, etc..

Windows Event Log shows:

I attached the report.wer file from C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_gameex.exe_da7d5025fd4b3926c3ed611662e921ff7f82a76_00000000_0ca4e7fe.

I've also captured and attached a ProcMon output filtering by Process is GameEx.exe, in case that helps.

Verify Setup output is below.. do I need to clear up all of these missing directories?  I have the other emulators "disabled" in the config file, AFAIK..

I am hoping to use this install at a New Year's Eve party tomorrow night.. sooo..  if anyone has any ideas, please speak up..  I was able to run MAME64.exe independently and it played games (after I configured the directories, etc)..  My MiniIPAC even worked! yay

Your paths look ok but i did notice you do have some network paths in there ie the double "\\". Have you reset the server since install, and does it have the right permissions? Remember GameEx needs full access to operate correctly. :)

Tom, the gameex log file is not written to.. It still has the Dec 23rd file that you built this release with..

DazzleHP, I'll have to check the UNC paths that you mention..I don't recall typing any of those during set up.

I did see, after my post, that the mame executable was set to mame32.exe.. I corrected that to mame64 instead, as I installed 64 bit version.. No noticable change, though..

I'm available for a remote desktop session if that's an option?

Is anyone able to decode the crash report file to something meaningful? I'd suspect the answer is in there...?

Thanks!

Hey kyoo,

Would you mind uploading the existing log.txt file anyway? You never know if there might be something in there that may be helpful.

Another suggestion I will make is to save a copy of the gameex.ini file and then delete the original. GameEx will create a default gameex.ini file the next time you run it. If it does not crash, I think it would most likely be a config related issue. If it does crash, we are probably looking at an OS/GameEx conflict. Either way, perhaps the resulting logfile will capture something.

Depending how this goes, you can always put the copy of the gameex.ini back if needed to return you to your original state.

RedDog, I just tried that before reading your post... haha.. I copied in the gameex.default.ini and it didn't work.. then I deleted the gameex.ini all together and it didn't work..  I'm now removing the gameex installed .net framework and GameEx.. I ran

DISM  /Online  /Enable-Feature  /FeatureName:NetFx3  /All  /LimitAccess  /Source:d:\sources\sxs

To install .Net Framework 2/3.5/etc just now and I'm about to reboot and reinstall the GameEx Arcade Edition again..

crossing my fingers...

I downloaded AppCrashView and it read the report.wer file for me.. sadly, it doesn't point at the problem as obviously as I had hoped..

Have you installed GameEx, Mame and your Mame assets to your dropbox directory? I'm wondering whether this has something to do with your problems, as dropbox may attempt to access some GE system files whilst GE is trying to do the same - could cause conflicts.
@kyoo - You could try installing GE, Mame and (minimal for testing) assets to a non synced folder to test whether is this..

also @Tom Speirs - this is interesting in the log:

It is recommended that you run GameEx from its folder on C:\ and any emulator executibles in their respective folders on C:\ as well. You will need to set each of the executibles within each to "Run as administrator"

@stigzler , if you're basing your comments off of the log.txt I attached, then please note that I said my machine is not writing to that file.. that file was what came with the installer.. which would explain the dropbox stuff (I assume, as I don't use dropbox for anything) and the Tom Speirs' machine stuff you saw in the log.

As an update, I have reinstalled a fresh windows 10 install on this machine (it renamed c:\windows and reinstalled it).. I then enabled .Net Framework 2/3 and then installed GameEx Arcade Edition from a fresh download.. I didn't run the setup wizard, but I did set the gameex.exe to "run as administrator".. I fired it off and.. AND..  it crashed.

I then uninstalled it and it's VC++ redistributables, and downloaded VC++ 2008/2010 32bit and 64bit redistributables from MS and installed those.. then reinstalled GameEx.. and.. it crashed still..

I'm essentially out of time for the party tonight.. but now this thing is just ticking me off..

Happy New Year!

Sorry you're having problems. Are you running GameEx or GameEx Arcade edition?

It's very unusual for GameEx not to install successfully to a brand new Windows 10 install, but I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it....

Might be waiting for Tom to have a shufty - being as it's quite unique.

As a last ditch effort, I downloaded the regular GameEx package and uninstalled the GameEx Arcade Edition and installed this one.. and it loaded up just fine..  GAH!

Ah, good work. Then you've isolated the problem significantly! GE Arcade's quite new so there's likely some teething stuff... Sure Tom will sort when he gets a min - him and the other guys are working hell-bent on GE Evolution atm...

In all the troubleshooting have you set the applications  (GameEx Arcade,  MAME, etc.) to Run as administrator? Are the installed to c:\ instead of Program Files  (x86)?

Do you have the LAV codecs installed? Recommended are the ones found here. If you have Shark007 or any other codecs installed, you will likely need to uninstall them first before installing LAV.

Also, @capnstoobie, please provide copies of your gameex.ini and log.txt files.

It was a fresh windows 10 install, so no, lav codec is not installed.. is there a documented prerequisite list somewhere that I missed?

The above post is announcing the EVO Alpha, but the LAV filter recommendation is pretty much across the board for GameEx, Arcade, EVO as well as PBX.  You should be able to get by without them, but all things considered, you'll get better performance with them.

Do you have netframework 3.5 installed?

hmmm, without a log it there's literally nothing to go on.

Do you by chance have an AMD GPU, and also happen to be running Raptr Gaming Involved that is included in the driver suite?

If so uninstall it, it causes persistent crashes.

I've installed windows 10 on my intel nuc dn2820fykh..  i'm assuming that's not an AMD GPU, but what do I know.. ;)

Not sure what Raptr Gaming Involved is.. and no, unless it came with Windows 10, I don't have it installed or running.

I did include procmon filtered output.. so that's "something" to go on.. just download procmon and open the file I attached on the first post..

You could also install a fresh windows10 machine and install dotnet3 using the "dism" command line above, and then this gameex arcade edition.. most likely you'll see the crash first hand..
