I had my windows 7 infected with some sort of nasty virus and decided to install windows 10 at the same time. Did a clean install.

I made a copy of my working gameex folder. I tried to copy my old settings and config files over the new install of gameex, but cant seem to get my roms and emus to show.

I dont exactly know what files i need to copy so i copied the config folder but that doesnt help...nothing is showing.

I also tried launching from the old gameex folder but i just get a black screen. I also used my reg key i got 1,5 years ago.

Can somebody please point me into right direction here. Do i need a new reg key or what is the problem?

Hey there mh666, sorry to hear of your troubles.

When GameEx is installed, it writes specific values when originally installed, and so if you didn't install everything exactly in the location it previously was, it probably is going to give you fits. Changing operating systems makes this nearly impossible, and even at best it could prove difficult on a 7 reinstall.

The good news is that if you saved the entire directory, you still have everything and will just need to reconfigure.

I would suggest you wipe everything (with the exception of your original backup), get a good registry cleaner like ccleaner (free one works fine), and get it all.

Reinstall GameEx, and install the key sent to you, launch, and exit. If you get nag screens, then you'll need to contact Tom to have this corrected.

If all goes well, start back with the setup wizard, try to absolutely put every thing in the same directory structure, and be prepared to do a lot of copy and pasting from your back up folder. You'll need to reference you're gameex.ini as a guide for rebuilding your directory structure to ensure your paths can simply be copied.

If you run into issues, post back here and provide your ini and log (see my sig for help finding these if you need it).

Be patient, take your time, and I suspect you'll recover just fine.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help Tthurman.

Luckily i got it sorted and have most of my emus working.

I forgot to copy 'gameex.ini' -file from my original installation. Thought i did it but apparently not. Too much of staring the screen for one day i guess.

Have to reinstall some emus but not too many. I thought i had to start from scratch and set up everything all over again, which would have been a nervewrecking process, but thank god not.

I only wiped windows partition. Everything else is on a separate partition, so the directory structure for my emus and roms remained the same.

My browsers were unusable because all these nice little ads kept popping up and something was messing with my internet connection. Tried ccleaner, spybot, malwarebytes something, jre, avast...Some of it was removed, but it kept coming back. Tried manually remove startup junk in 'msconfig' and rebooted and there was couple new random programs every time. Normal and safe mode.

Sometimes it's easier to just wipe and do a clean install.

Hope it will stay clean for some time. I'm not going to use my arcade cabinet for browsing anymore.
