Hi All, Newbie question........

hello everybody,

im new to GameEx but can i say it looks superb, so far ive had no troubles with it, however one thing that is driving me insane is how do i change the rom abbreviation filenames to the full filenames? ive tried lots of different things and im about to just say f**k it and use a different front end, something i dont want to do.

any help would be very much appreciated, i have nearly 8000 roms and would really like filenames, i also have mame installed which worked fine with correct filenames, however this was gifted to me by a friend and the interface was very outdated, this was just mamepgui i ran that and every rom came up with art and named correctly, however whatever i try do with GameEx its just abbreviations.

hope to find a solution as this looks a fantastic piece of software. thanks.

Hi there jdogg,

I know it can become frustrating learning a new program when you just want to "get it done" but i'm sure you can agree that each new program/app needs a little patience to grasp and understand how it works. As it happens (and i'm sincere in this, not just because i'm a mod) that GameEx is the most user friendly, and configurable frontend that has existed for a long time

Bearing that in mind, i can tell you that you in fact posted your gameexonline.ini, which in this case doesn't help us much in understanding what is wrong, and how to help you. I have my suspicions, as do i'm sure a lot of members reading this, as to what may need changing in order to rectify your situation, but in order to do that we need access to the right files

As you're new to all this it's understandable that you mistook the file we are after for the one you posted.

For clarity, we would like your gameex.ini located in:

...\GameEx\CONFIG\gameex.ini

Once you have found that file and posted it, i'm confident we can help you move forward

Try the one that shows as GameEx. For some reason you have Windows Explorer set to not display file extensions.

i would like the list of roms displayed as the actual game names, all im getting is the rom abbreviations like ddragon, or aftburn or ffight etc. i would like double dragon, after burner, and final fight, how do i do it?

This is, in fact not the way to setup MAME in GameEx. GameEx has its very own MAME setup, specifically designed to utilize MAME in all it's glory. It will treat MAME as "special" if set up in the correct manner

Admittedly, this is not as obvious as it should be to newcomers - we should do something about that.

To configure GameEx properly for MAME, load the Setup Wizard:

Windows Menu> All Programs> GameEx> Setup Wizard.

Choose Custom> MAME Settings, and configure/enter all your paths (mame.exe, roms, screens etc).

Boot GameEx. If done correct, GameEx will ask "Update List"? Choose Yes and wait (it may take some time! In fact quite some time if you have a weak pc). When it is done, you will have a much better list, with info's, screens, and proper rom names!

Verify checks for everything to be in order, which isn't necessarily needed for many games to remain playable.

Filtering Japan will knock out some good titles, fighting etc.

Once you make these changes, and update, you should notice a fair amount more of fair titles. Ideally I believe you will see a good lists coming in around 3k, there are mechanical "wack a mole" type games that will never be displayed, and they make up a lot more than you might be inclined to think when considering MAME.

Agreed on all accounts apart from last statement - OnlyRoms means (if set to true) will only include roms that you actually have. Anything missing will automatically be excluded.

Sometimes it better to exclude what you don't have, than trying to include what you may have
