Sideshow88
I am a new user of GameEx, and the program has been well worth the money for my cabinet, making it much easier for my kids to use without my help. But while I HAVE been able to get alot of games working, it is still a work in progress. Initially I was only able to get about 900 games to show up on the MAME games list, and most of them worked. In an effort to get more of my favorites working, I was reading through these forums for a while, trying to glean off others' troubleshooting. I was following answers given to others and just going in and out of the Setup Wizard, hoping to find a YES/NO to switch that made the difference. A few days ago I switched three different, seemingly unrelated things all at once, per an answer to someone else on this forum, and then ran the "Update List" again. This time about 10,000 MAME roms became available, but most of them, including a large majority that worked before I made those changes, no longer worked, but still work when running MAME outside of GameEX. Unfortunately I don't remember the most recent changes that brought about this tuning of the tables, so I am hoping someone with some experience can point them out for me. I'll do my best to post all the required information. If I miss anything let me know. I think I'm supposed to post my config file on an actual post, so I'll follow up this post with that one. Thank you in advance.

tthurman
Your filtering options look okay to me.Some ideas I would consider:your history.dat location is set to default, is there one in there? Does it match your romset? If not a quick google search for history.dat will get you to the arcade history site. The more of these you have, the more accurate your list will be, and so its good practice to ensure these coincide with your sets, so the same for the following:catver.ininplayers.inimameinfo.datAlso, I would enable the filter, and remove Japan, should get you some good titles that otherwise you could be missing. GameFilter=Japan;Korea;Asia;Hispanic;Bootleg;French;German;Hack;Prototype;Hardware;Spanish;(Easy;(harderGameFilterOn=False TrueDon't forget to update after making any changes. Sideshow88
If there were one there, how do I know if it matches my romset? my Roms pretty much all came as single large downloaded zipfiles from "somewhere". As I said, everything was working great until I was able to get more games to show up, then I lost some functionality. Those files you mentioned, like catver.ini, what are those? do I download those from somewhere and place them in their assigned positions in the Gameex or MAME files? Your going a bit fast for me. I'm fairly familiar with emulation in general, but MAME is a whole different animal to me...
tthurman
In keeping with the forum rules, please don't mention where you may have obtained such items please. I scratched that BTW
tthurman
MAME Support FilesCatver.ini = Classification by category and version, used in various frontendsControls.ini = controlsHistory.dat = Arcade HistoryDue to the frequency that MAME is updated, things change and change quickly. I have no idea what your set is made up from, but you can likely take a look at the file dates, and get close to which set it is by matching it to a mame release that is in that same general release date.Google searching will quickly turn up sources for each of the files, and they go into the folders GameEx is pointing at within the GameEx directory. The more info you supply, the more accurate you list will be, and the better things will run with a full-out GameEx config running. Some are more critical than others, but I would try and have history.dat, controls.ini and catver.ini
Sideshow88
I'll start on that right now. So there isn't anything that jumps out as a reason that I would gain so many available ROMs but lose functionality? Seems like and odd thing to have happen, but what do I know... Draco1962
Keep in mind that of the 10000 or so MAME ROMs that are available, the bulk of those are mechanical or otherwise do not work. Once you get down to a working list, you will be looking more at about a third of the total actually working. As tthurman noted, the version of your MAME ROMs must match the version of your MAME executable, or else you will have problems. Generally, the MAME support files will be of the same version as well.
nullPointer
I'll start on that right now. So there isn't anything that jumps out as a reason that I would gain so many available ROMs but lose functionality? Seems like and odd thing to have happen, but what do I know...You mentioned that you are familiar with emulation but that MAME is a different beast altogether, and on that count you are absolutely right. With other emulators, the emulator itself is separate and modular from the ROMs. With MAME the ROMs are part and parcel of the emulator to the point that they are inseparable, and as such, your ROM version must match your version of MAME (since they are basically one and the same). The same goes for your MAME support files since they provide metadata for your ROM set and if the versions don't match you'll see unsatisfactory results in your game list.
Sideshow88
So far I am experimenting with leading GameEx to different versions of MAME to try and run the ROMs that were working earlier, and I am having no luck. But when I run them without GameEx now, they work fine. Both with MAME32 and MAMEUI roms are now working outside GameEx but not inside. There must be something that needs to be switched... tthurman
It could be that you can switch some things around, and get back to where you previously had been, but it's unlikely you'll get a fully functional list within the frontend without the correct files because, as nullPointer described in detail, the frontend is looking for this data. You almost certainly changed something in the filtering options, as this is some of the few settings that can have such an overwhelming impact on what's displayed. If you just want to play with things change these in the config wizard. For greatest impact, toggle verifyroms to true, then update.....and see where you get. I'd suggest one change at a time so you can see the impact each has, updating after each change.OnlyWorking=False True is default hereAllowImperfect=True True is default here (no real reason to play around with this one, unless you want to lose a bunch of titles)VerifyRoms=False True is default here, and this one has a huge impact what shows on the listOnlyRoms=True False is default here
Sideshow88
At this point I am seeing a little over a thousand available ROMs, I just cannot get ANYTHING to play through GameEx. I have MAME32, MAMEUI32 and MAMEUI64 available as my MAME executables, and I am pretty much just switching between them to see if I can get anything to work. Up to this point I have been scared to change anything else, so I'll get into the configuration and mess with the toggles and see what I can get. Thanks. tthurman
I've not done this in....I couldn't tell you when, but you could grab vanilla MAME, current release, and verify your roms to see where you are up against the current release. I'm hesitant to suggest this, because these steps aren't easy to understand, especially if you are new to this, but you can also use utilities such as romcenter and clrmamepro to check, and rebuild sets to correct them, given you have something to rebuild them with, which you'll have find elsewhere. At any rate, using the MAME verify tool will give you an idea of what you may be up against with your current set. Sideshow88
So I decided to go through the Wizard and reset all the stuff I was using to defaults since I was having better luck before I messed with stuff, and I now have about 600 ROMs showing up, many of them working. Should I now start switching the values you just mentioned, or is that the wrong direction now that I have better results than before?
Sideshow88
Is there not a way to assign a different version of MAME to open up when you select a game, one that is older but at least works for that specific game? Probably a stupid question but I'm still trying to understand how to even know which ROMs are considered up-to-date with the latest version of MAME... tthurman
You're probably fighting an uphill battle with an unknown value as in the case of your romset, but l'll try to explain by building on what nullPointer was touching on. MAME is constantly evolving, even when it's not so much apparent, little things to make the emulation 100% accurate can be occurring. Sometimes this can be a negative from a gameplay stand point, but ultimately 100% emulation is the goal of the dev group, not gameplay. The individual game folders in an un-merged set will have numerous files in them, some that can actually be shared among other completely unrelated titles. Due to this utilities such as clrmamepro can take pieces from complete roms, and rebuild incomplete ones to make them work, but those details are for another topic. What I'm trying to get at here is each time and new version of MAME is released, the effects reach down to the rom level, as files within them are also many times changed to match the new version. So see there really is no way you could assign different versions of MAME to launch individual games. A:) You'd have no idea what version it was built upon, and B:) You could have titles built from literally dozens and dozens of releases, that would require who knows how many MAME executable's.Frontend's like GameEx do a lot more than the basic launching that goes on with say the launcher that comes with MAME. Suddenly you have something that will sort by era, genre, manufacturer, etc. and so on, and this is where those catver.ini, history.dat and so forth come into play. They provide the crucial data to make the connection between the Frontend, MAME and romset, all hit on every cylinder. In your particular case, you may want to try playing with those settings in the filtering options, but I'd recommend one at a time, each time followed with an update. Verify Roms does exactly that, and in your case may be a good thing, but regardless, if set to true you'll have a smaller list, because it checks the rom for accuracy. Since this is the default setting, this is probably why you are back to some level of working after doing a complete re-install.I believe your best bet is to do some investigation, and hopefully discover what release your romset is based upon. If you can discover this, then grab the MAME source for that version and compile you own vanilla MAME, you'll have a much easier go of things. Otherwise, I would do some searching, and consider moving on with a totally new set.Ultimately if this hobby is one you want to pursue, your in for a bit of a learning curve initially, but it'll all "catch" and make sense to you in pretty short order with a little work.<disclaimer> these are purely my opinions based on experience, you, and or others may feel differently. nullPointer
Tthurman's description above is probably one of the best descriptions I've ever seen regarding the relationship between the MAME executable and the constituent ROM sets. Basically, any time you change to a different version of MAME (whether that means switching to a newer version or even an older version) you should update your ROM set to match. MAME won't play well with "any old ROM set," the ROM version has to match the version of the executable. With a non-matching set you might (and probably will) have some functioning games since not every ROM set gets updated upon each release of MAME. But the greater the discrepancy you have between the version of your ROM set and your version of MAME, the more troubles you will have.

Sideshow88
This is so interesting to me. So the best way for me to know what version of MAME my ROMset corresponds with is just to see if I can find out from the place I obtained the ROMs? Aand what is my next step after I align my MAME version with my ROMset? Are there a series of toubleshooting steps you can take with each individual non-working ROM to see if you can gain some functionality? And can adding the appropriate files like history.dat actually help MAME run certain ROMS it had trouble with, or are those more for keeping GameEx orderly?
tthurman
Yes, assuming their all from one particular set, if you can discover that info, that would be ideal. A real Captain Obvious suggestion here, but you may want to check the folder for a readme that contains this information.Personally if it where me, once had obtained the release the set is based upon, I would grab the corresponding mame source release, then headkaze's mame compiler, and compile my own vanilla mame, adding hi score. Hunt down the appropriate support files, history.dat, catver.ini, etc... move everything into the appropriate directories, launch gameex, go into mame, update, enjoy.
nullPointer
This is so interesting to me. So the best way for me to know what version of MAME my ROMset corresponds with is just to see if I can find out from the place I obtained the ROMs?I would actually contend that this is not the best method for doing this. There are ROM auditor tools available for this express purpose, and while they won't tell you the version of a particular ROM, they will tell you whether your ROM set is simpatico with your version of MAME. They'll even try to "fix" your ROM set for you so that it is compatible with your version of MAME if you let them.**This is probably more advanced than you want to get on your first go around, but once you become familiar with the tools can become an invaluable resource. It would probably be a good idea to start with a backed up subset of ROMs, while you're learning the ropes of these tools. For new(ish) users I tend to recommend ROMCenter for the purposes of ROM auditing. It’s a great tool to have in your arsenal. Here are a couple of tutorials to help get you started with ROMCenter:Romcenter 3 tutorialROMCenter WikiAnother great tool to be aware of is the venerable ClrMamePro. ClrMamePro is not nearly as user friendly as ROMCenter, but it’s got a lot more history behind it, and occasionally you’ll see the grizzled old emulation veterans using CMP over ROMCenter. Here’s the complete guide to using ClrMamePro.YMMV with these tools, but I feel like they really take some of the guesswork out of matching the ROM version with the MAME version.
Sideshow88
Ok. I'll be following those suggestions this weekend. A question about those support files, like the history.dat and those things, could the lack of all of those files be to blame for certain roms not working? I found out that the place I get my ROMs has them all updated to MAME.158, so I downloaded that exact MAME release and pointed GameEx to it. At this point I would say 1 in 20 well-known games are woking. The rest say something like "LOADING 0%" briefly and then cut to black, eventually taking me back to GameEX. So is the addition and proper placement of those files a measure that halps the user have more information about the game they are playing, or are those actually essential in the functionality of some ROMS? Sideshow88
Here's another question I must have thought of while I was sleeping, because I woke up wondering this: Does it matter what file I put all my ROMS in as long as GameEx is directed to that file? Or is MAME itself sensitive to that in any way?
