When I set up my X-Arcade I intentionally installed everything to the D: drive and all the games to the E: drive. I used the SSD for OS only. Last night this paid off in spades and worked out exactly as I hoped it would if I had a crash...

I built a PC for a friend a few weeks ago. Since this is also my part time business I take all builds seriously even if it is for a friend. Turned out the PC case I ordered never came in. Seller refunded me and made good but I had every component except the tower case so I yanked out my X-Arcade case and built his PC into it. Had to be done to get the customer his system.

My new case finally came in and over the last 2 nights I put it all together. I connected everything exactly where it was. All cables and slots were marked so I would be able to put it together exactly as it was and avoid trouble. Yeah that didn't work... the system insisted the install was corrupted because of new hardware. No clue where this "new hardware" was but after an hour long frustration-fest I wiped the drive and re-installed Windows 7. At that point - since I'm starting from scratch anyway - I upgraded to Windows 10.

So... my SSD drive was ready to go. I downloaded GameEx because the new OS didn't know it was installed. I installed it over the old directory on the D: drive so now the system sees it and it shows in my Installed Programs list. I ran my regkey and all set. This also has the added benefit of being current to 14.40.

EVERYTHING worked perfectly. Since the emulators were installed on D: and the game drive was already E: all I had to do was reconfigure Mednafen, Stella and Nostalgia to use the proper controllers. I also installed LAV codecs since I had a clean install to work with. What I thought would take me days of reset and reinstall took 2 nights.

Keep that in mind next time you do a build! Saved me a ton of trouble. If this post helps one person it's worth it. :)

Oh, and Adultery? I'm still using GameEx Launch! :)

As an aside - what are people using in Windows 10 for an ISO mount program? Haven't tried it yet but I still use ePSXe and Daemon Tools was uninstalled on my laptop when I upgraded to 10 due to incompatibility. I'm probably going to switch to Mednafen for PSX but since it's all set up I thought I'd ask first.

This is similar to the way I am doing it too. I have a media box and my PC that GameEx is set up on. I can easily migrate the changes I make on the PC to the media box because the drive setups are the same. It is also nice to have everything in two places in case I do loose a hard drive.

Ahhh ClassicGMR - if only we could persuade everyone to take these kinds of precautions ^_^ I'm sure we would avoid a lot of hassles!

I have all mine on a separate partition, when i have to reinstall Windows all i need to do is go into the drive manager, change the partition to the correct Drive letter, Install GameEx, overwrite with my own .ini and within hours all is fine and dandy ;)

It pays to think ahead, huh :D

Let's hope more people learn from your wisdom. Great post!
