Hi All,

I was just wondering if someone could help me with an issue I have been having I had built my arcade and bought gameex well premium edition, and all was well until my hard drive died and so did my arcade until recently when I had some time and decided to try again so I sorted a computer and was putting gameex on and put my roms on which are 0.119 but they arent working it tries to run them but I end up back at the main screen Is there any way to solve this?

Thanks

You'll need to provide your .ini and log for review, as this gives everyone a look into how you have things configured.

After you got everything loaded back up while on the mame menu, did you go to the bottom most section and select "update".

Info on the files we need are here in sections 2 & 3 thanks.

If after running Update List within GameEx, you are still getting thrown back to to the menu then double check your Mame Path and Rom Path in Setup Wizard > MAME Settings.

Having incorrect paths is a common cause for this behavior and often gets overlooked when reinstalling ;)

Thanks Guys

For the quick response yeah I did my update and it finds roms all of them just none work. I deleted the mame I downloaded with Gameex and replaced it with mame 0.119 thinking this would solve the problem but gameex was behaving erattically so I went back to what was there did the update so I am back to square 1. The paths seem ok as its finding the games any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Should I post the Gameex .ini ? sorry its been a while

Oh, and you're probably going to want to turn off Verify Roms once you get things going, else you'll possibly filter out many games unintentionally.

We need to see your log after you have tried to launch a MAME game. So try to launch any game through the MAME menu then post your log :)

This concerns me a great deal. MAME is not like your typical emulator - you can't just update MAME and expect things to be OK. With each new MAME you need to have a matching romset! It's critical that they match in fact! You can't have a MAME 0.133 with a 0.124 romset, you can't have a 0.147 romset with a MAME 0.152. If you have a 0.119 romset you need, without any doubt, a MAME 0.119 to run them.

Mixing a MAME.exe with the wrong romset, without crunching words, is a disaster. I don't mean to scare you, but want to make you understand the importance of this. If you truly believe you have a 0.119 romset, then you should use a MAME version of 0.119. Nothing else. If you want to use a newer MAME, then you should upgrade your romset also to match. Don't mix them unless you want mega headaches ^_^

PS: Someone remind me to do a definitive guide on MAME at some point :P

The romset I got on DVDs years ago and I just dumped them on a seperate usb drive but its a full 0.119 version I did try to dump in the 0.119 mame and its ini but Gamex went Loco so I went back to what was there and updated again so I'm presuming the mame thats in gameex is up to date and I'm running older version roms which arent compatible but im not sure what my next step is Ill send an updated log and I think its important to say thanks for the help so far.

Heres the updated log I get to loading machine then booted back to main menu

Yeah, not too much we can do if your ROM set is older than the latest MAME version. To say that there have been significant changes since 0.119 is an understatement.

Posted

Before I threw in the towel on your current set, I would at least consider giving a clean compile of .119 if you don't want to bother with a whole new set.

I use headkaze's compiler, and it has been great for me, and so I'm extremely biased here :)

There's a link lower down the screen to grab v1.17 (which I've linked for your convenience, but I'd still give it a good read), which is for older versions, and you can still grab the high score diff here

Admittedly with a release this old, you could still run into some issues as GameEx may not play well with it, but it may work, and be perfectly acceptable for you.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi all thought Id let you know what was up i did try your idea using headkaze software but found it a bit tricky so went for the other solution of updating my roms and mame so I updated using 0.163 and downloaded 0.163 mame. guess what same thing loads up to loading machine and then dumps me back to the main menu. i dumped one of the games into mame without gameex same thing. where am i going wrong please help as you have been great so far, also I lost all my artwork avi snaps etc when i updated :( so Im sick but any ideas would be great

Many Thanks P

Well one caveat to updating to the latest version is that since 0.162 and on, MESS has become "officially" integrated into the MAME releases, due to this I have stuck with 0.161 for the time being.

One thing though, I've always found manually updating sets to be a pain, are you certain the rebuild went well?

Also, please post a new log just after launching and experiencing the crash.

All this aside, I just noticed that it looks like you are running "GameEx integrated MAME", and have setup MAME as an emulator. You've got to pick one or the other, I'd suggest integrated.

See this post

IF that's it, be sure and follow the steps Dazzle details below my post.

thanks very much for the response sorry if I sounded whiny I just put a lot of hours into this project since I bought the arcade machine and converted it to suit my needs thought I was on the finishing straight only to be knocked back. I'm not playing the blame game but as you can understand its frustrating. I will be keeping with Gameex not running MAME separately. I was only checking to see if Gammex was causing the issue which it clearly is not if they wont run outside of it. I did replace the mame with 0.163 in the external usb folder maybe it should be installed on the C: drive could that be an issue? Either way I will send a log and hopefully you can make sense of it, thanks for the support so far have built this arcade twice before hard drive died twice! on the home straight finally and hopefully I can get this resolved with your help.

No worries dude, things get frustrating at times, I completely understand that.

I'm pretty sure the problem is you've config'd two instances of MAME, and GameEx doesn't work this way.

See here your running it as a emulator:

17:12:22.2 02/08/2015: Loading Emulator 1: [Arcade] Arcade (MAME)

Problem is early on in the config wizard you set it up to run the GameEx "integrated" way (not via an emulator slot)

mamepath=D:\Emulators\Mame32\MAME

mameexe=mame.exe
rompath=D:\Emulators\Mame32\MAME\roms

If it was me, I run back through the config wizard, and remove emulator slot 1 Emulator 1: [Arcade] Arcade (MAME)

That should solve your crashing problem, but why you're in there make the setting changes Dazzle posts here, as well take "japan" out of the filter list.

Dazzle mentions this, but it's easily overlooked, so i'll repeat it.

Once you have saved your config wizard settings and relaunch GameEx......DON'T FORGET TO UPDATE

I have done as asked and got rid of the emulator in the setting up mame section no joy still the same. Black screen tries to load the game notice that say building machine and a % then nothing kicked back to gameex. I don't want to cut the japan games if I could get any of them to work japanese or not id be a happy man. anything else I could try?

Thanks P

I have the MAME software installed on c: but my ROMS, snaps, videos, etc. installed on other drives. You may want to try doing the same. A few things you will need to confirm:

- Does your ROMS set match the version of MAME you are trying to run? If not, then you will need to rectify this before going any further.

- Once you have a match between ROM set and MAME version, you need to confirm that MAME works outside of GameEx.

- MAME works? Confirm GameEx integrated MAME paths are mapped to the correct locations for the MAME executible, ROMS, snaps, etc.

There may be a few other things to tweak but this is the start.

Just to be clear, removing Japan from the filters list will let those games remain, not prevent them for showing. That's why I suggested it, because it has a habit of removing some fan favorites.

You've got to have something going on with your setup for sure, it's simply not this difficult. Botched set, bad compile, something, I've literally set this up hundreds of times, mostly while responding to threads just as this one.

To echo some of the above.

Run MAME without GameEx first and foremost, if it doesn't run even then, GameEx has been eliminated from the equation, and is not the problem.

Install the latest official MAME release from mamedev, thereby skipping any third party tweaks or enhancements.

If none of this works, then uninstall the GameEx and the directory, use something like ccleaner to clean everything up nice a neat before reinstalling and trying a completely new run through the config wizard.

I'll ask that you don't read anything into the following, these are simply my observations from many, many trial and error sessions.

You didn't state what rebuilder you used on your set.

Regardless, all available options bring with it their own learning curves, as well as leaving you sometimes with the feeling you did everything right, even when you didn't. Rebuilding a set as old as yours would be a very large task to complete "cleanly".

The set you mention that you have from "DVD's" is so old that it is near Smithsonian display quality in technology years (just kidding ;), well sort of). Massive changes in MAME occurred in the 0.106 era, then again in 0.139, and most recently in 0.162. It's not my goal to sound negative, but I'm sure you can see that rebuilding such a set would be a fairly monumental task for all but the most seasoned veteran. I doubt I could do it with any confidence in all honesty!

So where I am now is deleted all to do with mame. downloaded 0.163 roms. externally. OK, Looks like the first item is checked off.

Um... looks like a step (in red) was missed or, at least, you did not indicate that you were able to load/play any ROMS outside of GameEx.

if you go to the mame website and look for 0.163 it sends you to 0.164B i had no choice when i run it out of gameex i take a mame rom in zip format and drag and drop it into the mame exe and it says the machine could not be loaded something about a mame.ini look im not an expert so i dont know what that means

I understand your frustration however, you will need to get it working in MAME outside of GameEx first. That is why we have provided some pretty specific instructions as to the order. The members here will be glad to help as much as they can, but you are only going to frustrate yourself and those trying to help if you don't follow through the steps.

One of the members will need to assist you with 0.163 and above. I have not migrated past 0.158 and do not intend to do so for a while.
