I thought I was very satisfied with the NES emulation in Nestopia, but then I tried some PlayChoice and Versus games in MAME. Green Beret\Rush N' Attack for example, the HLSL filter (with custom settings) did some great things to the colours and the music I thought sounded even better than in Nestopia with more "punch" in it.

GameEx downloads a MESS version from 2012, so I went to the MAMEDev website to dowload the latest version but it seems like they have merged MAME and MESS together in the latest version and for some reason they have taken down the old versions of MESS and MAME. I'm hopeful that they will put the old versions back up sometime in the future, but right now I'm very hyped about what MESS could do for some of the old NES titles.

That is why I'm making this thread with the hopes that some kindhearted soul with a recent version of MESS(0155 - 0161) would be willing to upload it somewhere for me.

You should be able to find an older release on their website then just compile your own version using HK's program. In fact, you should be able to just compile MESS outside of MAME. I haven't bothered to look into it recently...

Have a look here: http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/misc/mess.html

They have 0.161 there precompiled. Hopefully that will suffice.

NES emulation in MAME is pretty Awesome. If you use and have the nes software list, you have access to pirated carts which are pretty interesting that I believe can't be found in any other popular sets.

Being able to use HLSL, OpenGL, save/load states, cheats, etc. makes the emulation very enjoyable :)

MAME now supports many unique different things which can be read about here.

Thank you very much. At first I was a little wary of compiling my own version since I have ever done that before, but KK's program doesn't seem very threatening to use so I was going to give it a shot but then I realized that mamedev.org have taken down all the old source codes as well with only the new 0162 remaining.

I did download the file from Emulator-Zone but a scan using www.virustotal.com did show a worm called Worm.Feebs.Win32.145 in the executable. Just two of the virus-scanners on that site discovered anything suspicious and the one who named the worm was an antivirus program called Zillya which I have never heard about before. Most likely it is a false positive, I just don't want to take any chances with it.

For comparison I also scanned MAME 0161 from the same site which gave the same results with the worm warning. I also scanned MAME 0160 from emuparadise and that file came out clean so it seems to imply that either there is something new in MAME (and MESS) 0161 which causes the false positive or that emulator-zone are inserting something extra in their downloads.

The search goes on but if I don't find any trustworthy sources for the file I will just put my NES playing on the shelf for a while. I'm sure that mamedev.org must update their website soon.

Thanks for the help anyway :)

hmmm, I wonder if they plan to make the older releases available, or if this is part of their sinister plot to make us all move onto the new version.

I found this mirror sometime ago, and just completed a 0.161 compile using the 0.161s zip, as the exe is already gone.

Probably best to grab them while you can just to be safe.

Thanks for the link! The binary version is up again it seems as it was succesfully downloaded from:http://www.whiper.com/mame/

I downloaded all of the files, both the compiled and non-compiled versions of both MESS and MAME, you know just to be sure :)

I got the same warning from the from the virusTotal website (Zillya) about mess0161b.exe so it must be a false positive. So my speculations about Emulator-Zone was wrong.

Hi again :) Sorry to bother you, but how do you know that the link you posted is an official mirror of MAME and not someone impersonating as that? I couldn't find any references for it.

I'm quite sure it's not "official", that would only be the case if linked at the mame site itself. I'm sure it's no more official than the other link posted here. In the months since I found it I've noticed that he follows the release schedule, and so I can only assume he is a hobbyist providing a service for those in need when the mamedev site goes down, which I've seen on more than one occasion (that's how I found it to begin with).

Given the current state of 0.162, and suddenly being faced with no way to obtain 0.161, I grabbed the source and complied with it. I experienced nothing out of the ordinary. I simply provided the link here as an option to the pre-compiled link Han posted.

Thank you very much! I'm going to go for it. It will be interesting to see how the situation with the older MAME build being taken down develops. It would be very strange if they removed them for good, but it is also weird that they have been gone for a week or more which makes it seem like it is not just website maintenance.

In the GameEx General forum, is it off-topic to post start Emulation related threads which are not remotely associated to setting up GameEx and getting it to work? Like for example: "Man, this MESS Emulator is totally awesome for playing NES games!".

The Social Club subforum is probably the best place for non-GameEx related banter of the nature you are describing.
