Adultery
So i got a really nice Pi kit for x-mas. Does anyone else have one of these? I'd love to hear some suggestions on what to do with it.Probably gonna build a card with RetroPie on it and another with Android.Any cool uses for this beast I might have missed?I might build a retro machine from an old Genesis 3 I have laying around, just not sure yet. hansolo77
There's lots of things you can do. I only wish I was intelligent enough to do stuff on my own, without online guides and such. Everybody else does all the legwork and I just copy what they did. Still, it's a nice device for tinkering and I'd love to get one of my own (or 2 or 3).
GeorgeT
I was just wondering if that could power a bartop I'm looking to build
Adultery
Right now I'm enjoying RetroPie and playing with a breadboard to get some LED lighting in and add a power switch. Took me a while to get it running just right with the 360 pad... I don't think the 32gb card will be enough room though...I think you could do something cool like a bar top but i can't imagine it would play anything too heavy. Setting up Retro Arch now, hope it runs at a good speed.
Draco1962
Looks like that is the limit tested (32GB) but you can add a USB flash drive to it Pi for additional file storage from what I have read.
GeorgeT
yeah, i thought maybe having all the roms on an external usb drive. I know it can't power the newer games or CHD games, but for classics like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man maybe?
Draco1962
A large thumb drive could probably contain much of a collection, minus CHDs. Likely that would be enough for a decent setup. An external HDD would have to be powered and rated for the Pi to not feed power back to it.
Adultery
Well the issue is that RetroPie syncs the roms to the SD card off the usb (which have to be unzipped btw, minus mame of course) and then you have the artwork. You're pretty much locked to 32 gb, so I'm pruning my rom lists to only include faves.Overclocking the Pi to High (provided you have a heatsink) seems to be fast enough for the oldies. I'll be interested in seeing how it handles SNES.
chrismcd
I also Got a Raspberry Pi for Xmas just not had a chance to install Retro Pie yet. Mine will Mostly be used for Emulation.

Draco1962
@Adultery - I'll see your Pi and raise you an Intel Compute Stick. I wonder if we could get GameEx and MAME running on this?
Adultery
Mmmmm, I think I would like that... It might be a little underpowered for some emus but I bet GameEx could run on low settings. I def think it would be fun to play with!I think about trying to run GX on a netbook and it makes me think the experience would be underwhelming but it's only gonna get better from what it is now. DazzleHP
I've got to admit, carrying just GX and MAME around on a stick like that would be dam sweet! Now if someone could invent a collapsible 360 pad, i'd always keep em in my jacket pocket - in fact i would probably get out more!! @Adultery - I'll see your Pi and raise you an Intel Compute Stick. GeorgeBuford
I put together the 'cupcade' cabinet over xmas ( http://www.adafruit.com/product/1783 ). Only burnt myself with the iron a couple of times! The interface for MAME/NES is functional but not pretty. Has anybody tried getting WINE / GameEx to work on Pi? It would be a great front end for this unit.More promising is this platform: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/products/fitlet/ Specs say it runs Windows at 1.6Ghz, so compatibility shouldn't be a problem. If the roms and extras can be stored on a usb or network drive, sky is the limit for GameEx online.-GB

Adultery
You run RetroPie on that?I bought a touchscreen LCD for my board but will probably build something.
GeorgeBuford
It runs Gamera on startup ( curses based rom selector - think MameGUI, but uglier ). Then it launches a version of AdvMame for emulation, and a background task 'Retrogame' to translate the joystik / button presses to keys. The board is the Raspberry Pi B - so due to processor speed and control panel space limits your rom selection. That said, it is still MUCH cooler than the single game 'Frogger', 'Pac Man' and 'Donkey Kong' versions that I wish I had when I was a kid... http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Coleco/DK.htm-GB
