Adultery Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 So i got a really nice Pi kit for x-mas. Does anyone else have one of these? I'd love to hear some suggestions on what to do with it.Probably gonna build a card with RetroPie on it and another with Android.Any cool uses for this beast I might have missed?I might build a retro machine from an old Genesis 3 I have laying around, just not sure yet. Everybody else does all the legwork and I just copy what they did. Still, it's a nice device for tinkering and I'd love to get one of my own (or 2 or 3). 1 Quote

Adultery Posted December 26, 2014 Author Posted December 26, 2014 Right now I'm enjoying RetroPie and playing with a breadboard to get some LED lighting in and add a power switch. Took me a while to get it running just right with the 360 pad... I don't think the 32gb card will be enough room though...I think you could do something cool like a bar top but i can't imagine it would play anything too heavy. Setting up Retro Arch now, hope it runs at a good speed. Quote

Draco1962 Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 A large thumb drive could probably contain much of a collection, minus CHDs. Likely that would be enough for a decent setup. An external HDD would have to be powered and rated for the Pi to not feed power back to it. Quote
Adultery Posted December 26, 2014 Author Posted December 26, 2014 Well the issue is that RetroPie syncs the roms to the SD card off the usb (which have to be unzipped btw, minus mame of course) and then you have the artwork. You're pretty much locked to 32 gb, so I'm pruning my rom lists to only include faves.Overclocking the Pi to High (provided you have a heatsink) seems to be fast enough for the oldies. I'll be interested in seeing how it handles SNES. Quote

I def think it would be fun to play with!I think about trying to run GX on a netbook and it makes me think the experience would be underwhelming but it's only gonna get better from what it is now. Only burnt myself with the iron a couple of times!The interface for MAME/NES is functional but not pretty. Has anybody tried getting WINE / GameEx to work on Pi? It would be a great front end for this unit.More promising is this platform: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/products/fitlet/ Specs say it runs Windows at 1.6Ghz, so compatibility shouldn't be a problem. If the roms and extras can be stored on a usb or network drive, sky is the limit for GameEx online.-GB Quote

GeorgeBuford Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 It runs Gamera on startup ( curses based rom selector - think MameGUI, but uglier ). Then it launches a version of AdvMame for emulation, and a background task 'Retrogame' to translate the joystik / button presses to keys. The board is the Raspberry Pi B - so due to processor speed and control panel space limits your rom selection. That said, it is still MUCH cooler than the single game 'Frogger', 'Pac Man' and 'Donkey Kong' versions that I wish I had when I was a kid... http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Coleco/DK.htm-GB Quote
