Top 10 Games Ever

9. Sudoko (Pen & Paper) - You said best games, not just video games. When I learned how to play this, I've decided it's so much better than crosswords and seek/finds.

Yeah, anything goes. My assumption when I first made my post was video games, but limiting the type of game will only limit the discussion

I would have a whole seperate top 10 just for RPGs.

In no particular order:

1: Xenogears

2: FF 3 (US), 7, 8, and the remakes of 2 & 3 for PSP, Tactics, and Lions. Oh, and the WiiWare one too.

3: Breath of Fire (pick any one, but loved the ps1 one! Still a great play, even if you opt for the psp remake, which was more or less a port anyways)

4: Any Dragon Warrior, but really loved the PS1 version that everyone hated... VII I think?

5: Super Mario RPG series, Paper Mario (Dream Team is awesome!)

6: Ultima series (I remember burning many hours on Exodus)

7: Any Zelda, my favorites being Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks, and the latest 3DS one (Link Between Worlds)

8: Suikoden (any of them but especially the first one on PS1)

9: Jeanne d'Arc (if you never got a chance to play this one, youre really missing out on something awesome)

10: Chrono Trigger (of course!)

And for the ones that probably should make the list:

Golden Sun (great series!), Star Ocean (any one, but really loved the 2 on PSP), Pokemon (when it wasn't cool yet, you know back when 50 shades of grey meant youre handheld's screen colors), Legend of Heroes (any of the 3 on PSP), Phantasy Star (IV being my favorite), and of course the Lunar series.

I could probably even do a top 50.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I forgot about Golden Sun. Huge memories with those games. My mind flows with emotions every time I listen to any song from GS1 and 2's soundtracks.

I upgraded to an SP just for GS1 so I could sneak it into work easier.

I really ought to go back through that and see if I can find all the Djinn this time around.

I remember going out and getting the guide books for both of those games. I was really obsessed. I think I still have those books.

I wish I had time now a days to sit (or lay on my bed as per customary at my house) and play those RPGs. I'm really far behind! I played Final Fantasy 7 straight through. Never got to the 2nd disk on Finaly Fantasy 8. Never played Final Fantasy 9. Played Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 straight through. On my Xbox360 I've played about 80% of Final Fantasy 13 but lost interest. Having never owned an (S)NES I missed out on the greats of Final Fantasy 1-6 and the Zelda games. I played Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (psx) all the way through but never got the chance to play Eternal Blue. I played the first Xenogears all the way through, but none of the sequels. I owned Suikoden 1 and 2 but never got to play them. I also owned Breath of Fire 7. I played through the first disk of Star Ocean: The Second Story (psx) but none of the others of the series. I played (but don't remember if I completed) Legend of Lagia and Legend of Mana. I also only played the first disk of Legend of Dragoon. Ultima was a PC game right? Somebody made a rudementary hack for the Xbox360 (required RGH/JTAG to play) of Ultima 7 but I have no idea what I'm doing in it. MMO's seem to be taking over the market of the RPGs nowadays.

I asked my dad what his 10 favorite games were. It really shows his age compared to mine: Donkey Kong, Centepede, Q-Bert, Pole Position, Tempest, Kaboom, Sim City (the original 1st version), Crue Ball (Sega Genesis), Solitaire (hyuck), and Crosswords.

I always loved Sim City and Sim City 2000, but the best sim game ever was Sim Golf. If I could get my mits on that again I would be in heaven.

Admittedly, I played most of those RPGs I listed when I was younger. I had a lot of patience and time for those long RPGs. I can still do it today, but I have a hard time staying faithful to a single RPG. It's a really hard genre to catch up on if you've missed a lot of greats.

The orig Sim CIty, was that on a 386/486? I can't recall, but I do remember playing it. For some reason I'm thinking 486 with the math co-processor. I could very well be wrong, but it seemes the sys requirements were sort of high for the day, and DX2 was it. Everything was software rendered back then, so it wasn't a video card req.

Regardless, I recall playing it on my uncles Gateway, pretty much during the cow heyday, and it was cool stuff for sure.

Cool topic. I had to think about these for a while, but here they are in no particular order.

1. Exed Exes (Arcade) - it's my name, so it has to be a favorite. An early shmup from Capcom in 1985.

2. The Guardian Legend (NES) - Part shmup, part Zelda-style exploration from Compile.

3. Solaris (Atari 2600) - Expansive in scope and some of the best graphics on the system. Of course it's a shmup!

4. Shenmue (Dreamcast) - Hardly a game quite like it with so many things to see and do.

5. Deus Ex (PC) - A masterful combination of FPS and RPG elements, with a great story.

6. Axelay (SNES) - My all time favorite shmup on the system.

7. Warioware Twisted! (Game Boy Advance) - Microgames (less than 10 seconds each) and the motion controls are amazing.

8. Seaquest (Atari 2600) - My favorite Activision release on the 2600.

9. Sonic CD (Sega CD) - The best Sonic, in my opinion.

10. Black Knight 2000 (Pinball) - Out of all I've played, there's just something about this one. I'm glad it made it to The Pinball Arcade mobile app, got a good score (top 10) on the last mobile tournament!

10. KOTOR, KOTOR2, TOR series (PC) - I played the originals and now am addicted to the MMORPG!

DAM! How did i forget KOTOR?! Easily another of my fave all time RPG's. I must have played it all the way through at least 10 times. I still have my original xbox copy Unfortunately i never played KOTOR 2 as my xbox was dead at the time and i never got around to catching up. Do you think it would be worth picking up on Steam and playing through? A couple of buddies at the time said it wasn't as good as the first, but then they had bad tastes in games anyway

@Exes - Shenmue was another great indeed! I got a bit annoyed with the whole "it will be three parts, but we'll only give you two parts" crap. It sort of ruined it for me a bit.

Just reorganizing my office for a room change and found some PC discs - realized I never mentioned StarCraft. That game has logged more hours for me than any other game out there (except EverQuest).

My son and I still play it when we have time to jump on Battle.Net.

Never tried Knights but something tells me I should give it a whirl.

The KOTOR series is great. It helps if you like the genre and the universe. I had no specific dislikes of either one of them, to say whether 2 is worth it or not. I can say, that if you decide you want to play the TOR (MMO) one, it's WAY better if you've played the first 2 games before hand as all the stories tie in together great. TOR is also free2play now so there's no reason not to get it!

The SimCity I was refering to is actually the port to the Atari ST. Dad was a massive Atari fanboy back in the 80's. He owned 2 Atari 800 computers and the Atari ST. Then he started getting into the PC side of stuff as Atari slowly phased themselves out of the hardware market and focused more on software. I had a really cheap flip phone like a decade ago that I downloaded SimCity on. Good memories.

Sure wish I could relate to my parents through video games like that. My mom is almost completely computer illiterate, and my dad stopped playing video games very early on. When I ask him what his favorite game memories are, however, he remembers his NES. His favorite game on there was Dr. Mario. He remembers clocking so many hours into that game that he began to dream in falling pills, haha. He's a doctor now, so perhaps it's fitting. (We still have that NES too, and it works great!)

@Exes - Shenmue was another great indeed! I got a bit annoyed with the whole "it will be three parts, but we'll only give you two parts" crap. It sort of ruined it for me a bit.

I imported the PAL version of Shenmue II on the DC because Microsoft snatched up the exclusivity rights to have the only US port on the original Xbox. That ends on a cliffhanger too, but I love the Sega classics you can play on them.

I just got Shovel Knight on Steam, and I'm very tempted to kick something off of my list for it. I only just started, though. I'll wait until I finish before I make such a big decision

Funny thing is I was keeping an eye on the development for Shovel Knight in Game Informer, and I was on the fence about it. I might just grab it though, seeing as you and I seem to share similar tastes. I guess that'll be on my to do list this week.
